LIO do you believe that teachers in the south get paid less than teachers in the north?

According to our HCEA president, Tennessee is one of the lowest teacher salary states there is. This is my 20th year and I FINALLY broke the $40,000/year mark because we got a 3% raise this year.

LIO I cant believe you only make that much you cannot be serious ( I think that is terrible with everything you do). My niece is in her second year of teaching and makes that much and is going on to get her masters and she will make more.(this is in Colmbus, Ohio) You definately seem to be happy and I'm sure your a great teacher. That is the reason my sister decided to go back and get her RN after she graduated from UTC with a teaching degree to teach K-8th.

One of the teachers who has been teaching for about 5 years makes less than $30,000/year. But, there ARE rewards with teaching that you can't put a price on. Walking into the hospital and seeing a former student who is NOW Dr. Williams and talking to another former student who is now Stephen Hinton, attorney-at-law is a feeling that you cannot put a price tag on. And there is NO amount of salary that can ever top "Thank you Mrs. Nell for making me WANT to learn. You were my favorite teacher."

Now I'm gonna cry. :cray:

What grade does your elementary school go up to?

We are a rural K-5 school with a new Pre-K class this year. We have 2 classes of each grade level except pre-K and 4th. Those two groups were small enough to only need one teacher.

LIO, are even the kids as young as yours writing everything they do as though it were a text message? You wouldn't believe the places I see such writing. Even in the professional world.

Love the new Av by the way. Even you got sabannochio-ized...:p

On notes that they pass each other I see a lot of BFFs and LYLASs, but in their actual classwork they KNOW better than to hand me that mess.

Thanks!! I'm kinda partial to it myself! (Thanks Sabannochio!! )

Did that actually happen?

I like working with kids, I have considered teaching before... I actually got in touch with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, but I don't have the time available to volunteer for it. I'm at school or work in the 60 hour/week neighborhood for 10 months out of the year right now. I know Oregon teachers do get paid pretty well, especially with tenure. I like the summers off, too. :)

Four-year college, right?

Not once but several times. And it never feels any less wonderful.

Milo, my advice would be to major in Elementary Ed. with a minor in either a second language (even sign language)
or Special Ed. It probably wouldn't hurt to just go on and get your Masters while you're at it. It ups the pay scale a bit and if you happen to wind up NOT liking the classroom, you can teach in most community colleges with a Masters degree (at least in West TN). And I wish more men would get involved in teaching. As for the summers off, 9 weeks to laze around and rest IS nice! :)

No. I once tried to grow some tomato plants but my husband killed them with Round-Up. :bad:

Do you ever get tired of thinking what are you gonna fix for dinner?

When school is in session I do a lot of casseroles / one skillet meals with veggies and various sides. When the weather gets cooler I do a lot of slow cooker stuff that I leave cooking all day. But yes, I do get tired sometimes and we head out to Doris's Diner or Mustang Allie's. :yahoo:
If you have some good recipes to share please send some my way.

Let me know what you like and I'll PM you some.

If I am attending the game it's either up very early for the 6 hour drive or leaving the hotel in time to make the Vol Walk. If I am watching at home, I get up and clean the house like a maniac to work out nervous energy. Then I turn off the phones, put on my Vol clothes, and get my shakers out. Then it's GAME TIME!!!

HOO!!! :cheer:
