Connecticut schools REQUIRE students to buy fruit or salads in order to get a sub sandwich. Just found this out today from a good friend in Hartford. Not only that, they are now recommending that FAMILIES adopt the governments guidelines for homes.
Most schools now require you to take the full balanced meal to get the lower price and charge ala carte prices if you skip a portion(i.e. a salad or apple). The thinking is you give the kids access to the fruits and veggies and eventually some will find their way into their mouths. Some kids eat the salad, some don't, even though the lunch ladies nag them. They toss out a lot of stuff but what other solution is there? Most kids won't choose the healthier items on their own, at least this gets it on the plate and eventually into their mouths.
