School Cuts Portions for Students $3 Behind

No parent should be asked to give those things up so that their child can eat.

WTF?

So I am to pay for the child's lunch so the parents can have lotto Tickets Cable TV and Xbox Gold

Its OK for a parent to put lotto tickets before their child lunch? well i guess as long as someone else will pay for the lunch!

I have the feeling that Thrasher's sarcasm was lost on you.

Would probably just be better if we gathered up all these poor kids taking advantage of us and gas them to death

It's been tried, but then some of the rich kids have to become the new poor kids.

Also, there's just too many of them, and it's too easy for them to hide when they don't own their own homes.

2.40 too expensive??..LOL

yet I bet they have internet cable TV and Xbox Gold and buy lotto scratch of tickets

You've already proven you don't have the first clue. This statement proves you don't have a second one either!

As many of you know we have kids in an inner city public school that has about 90% of the students on the free or reduced lunch program. Since I am a rich WASP, of course we have to pay. So every month we hand each kid a check for $50 bucks to refill their account. When we get low the school puts a reminder in their Tuesday folder, but when we forget the school feeds them anyway, even though my kids could miss a meal and not miss it.

Unfortunately, last year, my kids thought they would buy some popularity. So, the first month we were a little surprised to get a notice they had drained their accounts after 2 weeks. Then about 10 days later we got another note from the school saying we owed more money to their accounts. When my wife went to the school to check into this, she found they had been buying ice tea, chips and ice cream for all of their friends to the tune of about $250 bucks! Needless to say they lost computer access at home and packed their own lunch for the next few months after that!

Good story York.
I question one comment.
Were the kids trying to by some popularity or are they good loving tenderhearted children wanting to share with the less fortunate kids, not realizing what it was costing mom and dad?

No, they were definitely trying to win friends. It is funny, they don't see their classmates as less fortunate. Their stories can be interesting. Before I retired, they would say things like "Johnny's dad just got home from Iraq and visited the classroom today." Now it is "Johnny's dad just got out of prison and visited the classroom today." To them it is almost the same situation, i.e. their dad was gone and now he is back. Their lack of judgement on these issues can be refreshing.

I'm 100% for the government allowing children to receive free school lunches provided they've signed up for it. If $2.40 is too expensive for a family, and for some it certainly is, simply register properly and get yourself on the list.

I'd assume it's a fairly simple procedure; if you do not qualify for free government lunches and you simply don't pay your small debt to the school, I think that you're pretty darn lucky to be getting anything at all. If you don't want the humiliation and have no legitimate hardship preventing you from paying, just don't eat that day.

$2.40 a dayy for lunch can be a huge burden on struggling families. An extra $12 a week to feed their kid on top of the cable bill, cell phone bill, hair dresser, designer clothes rims on the car! Come on give the people a break.

if you're going to bring a child into this world you should realize you have a responsibility to feed it. If you want the govt to feed, clothe, house and educate the child then why not just turn it over to them?

But a lot of people don't intend to bring a child into this world. They just do it because they are dumb and lack any self control.

(Note: before someone gets offended, this was not intended to apply to all parents of an unplanned pregnancy. There are a lot of different circumstances.)

Is that supposed to be an excuse?

Actually, what men really lack in this country is the initiative to give her the "morning after gut punch" upon waking up after an unprotected night of careless whoopee.

I absolutely agree with this, as do many of my city friends. My oldest son, the 16 year old, used to believe the government should do it all. After all, his mother had him when she was 16 and rode the system her whole life. A short 18 months later and he will tell you his mother's biggest problem is she needs to get a job and take care of her kids the way she is supposed to.

Connecticut schools REQUIRE students to buy fruit or salads in order to get a sub sandwich. Just found this out today from a good friend in Hartford. Not only that, they are now recommending that FAMILIES adopt the governments guidelines for homes.

Honestly, Glen... I agree with you there. You can mandate what children put on their plates all you want, but you can't force feed them things they don't like. If they want a sub, they'll take the required fruit/vegetable and discard it or, better yet, trade up with another kid. I remember flipping my kiwi fruits for starburst candy as a child.

My least favorite thing about the gubment: it assumes we're all morons. In reality, it's only 80% true.

I've given this a lot more thought since the last school lunch thread. I should have known after helping raise two nieces and a nephew that, regardless of any circumstance, you cannot feed a child something they don't want to eat, be it from parents, uncle, cafeteria, or the government.
