Scrimmage Updates

I saw the practice highlights on utsports.com and #54 looked like McGlothlin but it is hard to really tell.

Ainge is the only QB that has the talent to throw an INT underhand for TD and get slammed into the goal post at the same time.

Enough of the ainge bashing :banghead:

What if the Ainge bashing is coming from Cutcliffe?

"That is what we have seen in the past and that is not acceptable," Cutcliffe said of Ainge's play. "That is what we scrimmage for. Playing quarterback is sometimes as much about knowing when not too do something as there is when to do it. Obviously, I have not gotten that point across well enough yet."

"If I were you guys (media), I would raise the issue too. It is a situation that every position we are evaluating all the time. At quarterback it is always a controversy. At right tackle it is a competition. We are going to keep competition at all positions including quarterback. He (Ainge) has to play better then he played from a mistake standpoint. I am sure he is disappointed. He is doing many things well. We are not shaking up or changing anything at this stage based on one scrimmage. I evaluate every one of them every day. I grade every practice. They are all held accountable to perform."

That is exactly why I think we should wait until after the 2nd scrimmage before we start the "bench Ainge" threads. He has made it clear to Ainge that he needs to step it up. The transition from the 1st scrimmage to the 2nd is usually the most important of the year.

And the transition from the 1st game to the 2nd is usually the most important -- But we don't have that luxury in 2006.

We'll see. Give the offense 1 more week before we give up on this team. The defense is always ahead of the offense at this point and for obvious reasons. If the gap isn't smaller after the next scrimmage, I would worry.

Cutcliffe's comments are not bashing, they are stating the truth of the matter. He is simply stating what needs to be corrected. But comments like "only Ainge has the kind of talent to be thrown into the goalpost and picked off at the same time" are statements that take shots at a player and are considered bashing IMHO...

Fair Enough. I am pulling for Ainge, I hope he finds the magic he seemed to have in 2004.

Lets give Ainge a little space before we start tearing into him. His psyche needs rebuilding right now, not criticism.

Right, because I'm sure Erik speeds home from practice to see what various fans are saying about him.

At least Cut didn't try and play it off. I am happy that he at least acknowledged the issues and didn't make excuses for him. I think that is a postive.

I think he's setting the stage for what is looking more and more like an inevitable change at QB.

I think it's something we have to consider as a possibility at this point.

I don't know if it's the shoulder injury, lack of confidence, or simply the fact that he was never really as good as some of us thought, but it certainly appears that Ainge is quite possibly done. I hope I'm wrong.

It's all confidence I think. Do you remember how poised he looked in the pocket in 2004? I thought for a true freshman he had an incredible pocket presence.

He looked poised when things were going well. Auburn and Notre Dame both flustered him. That said, I'm absolutely at a loss to explain his regression. I thought he was a sure fire all SEC quality QB.

I couldnt agree more, it's as though he cannot recover from those two games. He needs to have a baseball reliever mentality, you know a very short memory. But I also agree that it seems that as Crompton grows more comfortable playing again you may see Ainge move to the bench.

Ah yes, the players are in a glass bubble and have no idea what the media and fans are saying about them. And that in no way creates any additional pressure.

I withhold judgement until after the second scrimmage. This was the first full contact full speed action in several months - and QB is the most cerebrally demanding position on the field, i.e. he has the best excuse for needing the blow out the cobwebs of anyone on the field. I'm not excited about his mistakes either but before I jump off the deep end I'd like to see him get through more than 1 scrimmage.

Nobody on this board said anything more harsh than David Cutcliffe said himself.

I agree and found it refreshing as opposed to the typical coachspeak. However, I believe it was done in a constructive manner and I'm optimistic that we'll see improvement at the next scrimmage.

Man, I hope so. The notes on the scrimmage made my stomach sick.

I hear you... we're all jaded from last year's debacle. I'm sure we wouldn't quite as worried otherwise.
