Scrimmage Updates

Valid points, oklavol.

However, I think where the difference lies is Ainge has had some sort of success previously in his career, something Leak and Clausen hadn't had at this level. I would have to say they're holding out hope that the Ainge of 2004, except with the experience of a 3 year player, will show up eventually.

i read the articles on govolsxtra about the scrimmage, and was like "you got to be kidding me....". and while i'm not thrilled with what i'm reading and hearing, it is ONE scrimmage, it is the FIRST scrimmage....the D usually, go back and check, is ahead of the curve on the 1st one out....

So for now, i'll reserve the right to be completely disgruntled with the offense until after the next scrimmage.

I know this much, i do not want any signes of a qb contraversy this season. i really don't care who the starter is, as long as one guy is the starter and we're not rotating and trying to find out which one will step up....

Yeah, I was wrong about the TOs. It was the first 3 possessions, not plays. Still though, that is too much.
On the timeouts... I'm going to guess that they were using the new clock rules, where the clock starts running with the officials' ready for play...not the first snap... on change of posession.
That rule represents a real tempo change for everyone, and likely will take some getting used to. That's why we scrimmage...

just a guess though...

I think it's something we have to consider as a possibility at this point.
I have been watching Crompton since his freshmen year in H.S, he is without a doubt the real deal. Obviously there is a learning curve for any young man coming into college level play, but this young man has a great work ethic and is very coachable. This kid doesn't fold under pressure, and has a linebackers mentality. Ainge has had plenty of time to work on his mechanics and footwork, the real question is, how long do you go with someone who seems to fold under pressure, and makes the same mistakes he should have gotten over as a freshmen?

I couldnt agree more, it's as though he cannot recover from those two games. He needs to have a baseball reliever mentality, you know a very short memory. But I also agree that it seems that as Crompton grows more comfortable playing again you may see Ainge move to the bench.
I totally agree!!

I don't think so, the new rules are for the game clock, the play clock always started on the officials signal not on the snap.

You folks seem to be focusing on Ainge but Crompton had his own issue. Fumbled snaps, one lost to defense. I believe he alos had to call a time out.

The Tennessee offense may be in trouble. I woll reserve my judgment until after the first game. Howeever I have been saying that changes do not occur overnight. It takes longer than spring practice and a week of fall practice.

The issue with fumbled snaps could be related to the center position also patrick.

I understand that Freak. And Crompton was going against the second team which does make a difference.

I think that there will be serious issues OFFENSIVELY if Ainge cant get it together. Crompton is all but a true freshman. I remember when Peyton was a frosh QB with Stewart and Helton.... the first four or so games were UGLY.

Ainge and Schaeffer looked pretty good as true freshmen, and Crompton is a redshirt freshmen. I don't see it being that much of a problem.

Problems with the exchange between the center and QB are much easier to fix then problems with underthrowed and overthrowed balls and misreads that seem to be Ainge's problem.

If these 2 are played about equal, Crompton will win out simply because he has more of a future at UT. At this poiint, he has looked better in the first scrimmage. :good!:

I don't think Ainge would have a problem being a back up qb. He has stated that he prefers to watch a few series b4 he plays to get a feel for the game. Id love for Ainge to get all intense vocal and greedy about being the starter....the thing about it is I havent seen or heard this in him...that worries me.

I hope that Ainge wakes up and starts to be a leader. He needs to take charge of the offense and start playing Big Orange Football.

I'm pretty sure if we begin to sew Crompton taking SOME snaps with the 1st team offense AGAINST the 1st team defense, then the coaches have begun to worry.

Well as it is now, we're talking about crompton as if he played against the same defense as ainge did, and that is just not the case. Let's see what the kid can do against the big boys.
