Season isn’t over yet.

Our own coach, the one you are defending was about to jump ship and bail on us for a pay raise even though he was comfortable and had stability here.

That’s part of the problem. He wasn’t getting full support in basketball, and UCLA is a blu blood. You made part of my point.

History also didn't show us that the University of Tennessee would ever pay a basketball coach $5.2 million per year.

Because a hall of fame type coach fell into our lap upon being fired. He turned the program from mediocre to a SS and now has a top 10 recruiting class.

At this point we’re playing for pride and to get the freshmen minutes. Part of the reason we’re here is two recruiting classes and only Pons to show for it. Part of it is because all of the departures.

I really like Barnes, our future is bright with him, I’m glad he’s here and hope he retires here, but now you see why he flirted with UCLA. Barnes saw this season coming, too.

I don't agree with you. Buzz Williams just jumped from Virginia Tech to Texas A&M, which on it's surface is a lateral move... except that A&M ponied up more money. Barnes was absolutely going to leave Tennessee for UCLA if the money had been the same. Once again, you can't prove your claim, and I can't prove mine. There is no point in carrying this any further then.

History has proven my point. Buzz is from Texas just like Chris Beard. Buzz wanted to be closer to home and make more money.

My expectations for the remainder of the season are very low in terms of wins. The biggest thing I want to see is the development JJJ, Pons, SV, ORN and the other young players.

Sure, he did but I don't think that is why he flirted with UCLA. He wanted more $.

I did? I guess man, that’s fine.

Yea, pretty simple. We aren’t a blue blood in basketball who can hire a top 25 basketball coach. Wade Houston, Kevin O’Neill, Jerry Green, Buzz Peterson, Cuonzo Martin, Donnie Tyndall all say hello.

Heck, Billy Donovan came from Marshall, won 2 titles, left the program much better, and they hired Mike White.

This year was going to be about getting to next year. It always was.

I do like going ahead and playing Vescovi now though. Let him get in there, get acclimated, let the other players get used to him and him to them, and just start building towards next year.

We will get Plavsic next year, and every body else will be a year better. Bring in the new guys and next year could be a really good one.

Absolutely. This post should represent the prevailing sentiment on here.

That’s fine, I’m not really advocating for a new coach, I just get tired of hearing the nobody will come here line... I’ve heard it for years in football as well, except since we do have some tradition there the reason no one would come to us is because we weren’t willing to pay the big bucks. So apparently in football tradition doesn’t matter it’s all about money, but in basketball it’s about tradition and the money doesn’t matter. Just sounds like some defeatist bull **** to me but everyone is entitled to their opinion and obviously ours differ in that regard.

That depends on how you are defining "other big time coaches". The head coach of Tennessee basketball is definitely a top 15-20 job in the country and if they are willing to pay a head basketball coach $5.2 million per year (which I never thought they would ever do), as they are now paying Rick Barnes? Then that would open up many possibilities. I'm not sure why you are laughing at that.
Because many on this board would rather cherish the Houston years of Vol bball!

You simply fail to understand the discussion. Everyone has money. Jay Wright makes a little less than $4 million. He isn’t taking a million more to coach at UT. He makes a good living and likes his job. It’s just an example.

You are failing to understand the college basketball landscape. If you want the coach at Butler now, who I can’t name, or at Dayton or at San Diego State, then I’m sure $5 million would do it.

Again, history has proven it.

Barnes is Barnes. Go back and look at his previous record at Texas. He is a Sweet 16 coach at best with a good players.
Last years team ranked #1 longest ever. Bombed at the end of the season. Great win over KY in SEC tourney. Got
blasted by Auburn/Pearl in the final. Struggled in the NCAA tourney and UT thinks he is worth $5 Mil.

AAAAnt. UT thinks their basketball program is worth $5mil. another coaching search at that point would have set us back at least another 3 years.

Tennessee has not nor never been a basketball school.

Barnes is not perfect but if you honestly believe we can hire someone better that’s actually a realistic option, then you’re crazy.

I wouldn’t say losing by a last second basket to a good team is “struggling” sometimes that happens in the NCAA. You can’t help matchups, luck and how refs call games there. It’s not like we lost by 30pts to a 9 seed

Just stop. Tennessee is a football school first and foremost but we are a basketball school as well. 2nd most tradition to UK in the SEC before Arkansas joined.

Ok if that’s the case then who would you pick to replace Barnes?

It is what it is. We might have gotten Pearl (maybe) after his suspension. He did a bad thing at UT.
He paid the price. Barnes is no where near Pearl in coaching. $5 mil. a year would have gotten some looks.
