SEC coaches hot seat

Freeze should be somewhere on this list. He’s recruiting at a high enough level that they will be extremely talented at some point but the team is a mess currently.
I would have Freeze at #1, but currently he's not in danger. Jimmy Rane loves him and basically paid for Harsin to disappear and Freeze's salary. They don't have Bobby Lowder to kick around anymore, so Rane is basically controlling Auburn football.

Cadillac Williams is looking mighty good right now though.

Freeze is getting exposed. I'm convinced he's very overrated at this point.

His stint at Ole Miss was mostly highlighted by great defenses and he attracted top players by cheating. OK, Saban and Smart were likely doing the same (minus the hookers), but in the NIL era, he has no particular advantage. Everyone can pay players now. Not too mention that Matt Luke was responsible for a lot of the success on offense, but Freeze probably only got him due to his Ole Miss connections.

He did well at Liberty, but Liberty also spends an insane amount of money on football relative to similar programs. And while he had a good record, Jamey Chadwell quickly made that Liberty team much better than it ever was under Freeze.

I think Freeze's greatness was a bit of a mirage.

pretty sure he had a losing record in the SEC while at Ole Miss. He is really just remembered for beating Saban. everything else was pedestrian at best.

I'm not sure I'd put Venables above Napier on that list. Unlike Venables, Billy had no equity built up before the season began. Billy probably needs to 4-1 to finish the season to keep his job, and they're playing teams currently ranked #2, #5, #8, and #18.

I'd make a prediction that at least one of Alabama's coordinators is only going to last one season. On an absolute basis, their defense is just OK and it is awful by their standards. Offensively, Jalen Milroe has noticeably regressed and they have no real offensive difference-makers other than him and Ryan Williams. How long has it been since Alabama hasn't had at least an above average RB?

They've probably got another loss on the schedule at LSU, a game that will probably be at night. If Nussmeier/Lacy light up their defense, I bet Wommack gets fired. He was a bit of a curious hire to begin with; I get that DeBoer probably wanted someone with southern/SEC connections since he has none, but I thought he didn't exactly have a strong resume for that job.

I think that what he did at OM has also diminished because Kiffin has done better than he did. Lots of people, including myself, thought that Freeze hit the ceiling of what that program was capable of, but it turns out that he didn't.

It's probably a little unfair to say he's only remembered for those 2 wins against Alabama, but he's definitely remembered for just the 2014 and 2015 seasons. They were an up-and-down, typical OM program the other 3 years. And even during the 2014 and 2015 seasons there were some head-scratching losses (lost twice to unranked Arkansas teams, lose by 39 to TCU in the Peach Bowl, blown out by UF when ranked #3, lose to Memphis).

In regards to OU moving on from Littrell...

Has a Coordinator ever been fired halfway through their first season? Not like "got busted DUI with a car full of underage coeds" kind of firing. But "you sucked so bad they didn't even let you finish a season before firing you on your day off" kind of dismissal.

Watching Auburn play I wonder if Freeze regrets leaving Liberty where he could’ve stayed forever, made decent money (has enough already) and be somewhere where he’s loved and appreciated. Less pressure, better quality of life

It happens. The first that immediately comes to mind was Alex Grinch last year. The boosters made Mack Brown let Manny Diaz go 2 games into the season in 2013.

Auburn isn’t that far from Atlanta and there’s better whores there than in Lynchburg,VA….plus he has more money at Auburn to spend on them too

I believe his SEC record is something like 9-30 at this point.

Good stuff.

However this upcoming LSU/TAM game is gonna get lit. If LSU wins that game, they will light up Bama. If TAM wins, Bama could catch them weeping. Elcko is quietly doing what thus far what jimbo could not.

Can't really count Grinch since he worked as DC for five years before getting canned.

Same thing with Diaz. He was DC for a couple of years under Brown.

Littrell was literally in his first season as OC at OU.

It happens during the season, yes, but I'm not sure if a Coordinator in their first year has ever done so bad they got fired before the season was up.

Oh sorry, I apparently can't read. I missed "first season"

1. Venables (after getting killed by SC, the future looks very dim for Venables)*
2. Napier (could save his job if he pulls out a couple more wins)
3. Stoops (His worst coaching job of his career this season).
4. DeBoer (Bama loses another game, maybe 2, and the fan base goes postal on DeBoer)
5. Pitman (Pigs lose 3 more and finish 6-6).

Everyone else looks safe for now.

*Should the Vols hire Venables as DC if he gets canned and Banks gets a HC job?
I do not think DeBoer or Venables are in any danger of being fired. I think Stoops is also fine. Napier is definitely on the hottest of seats. Funny enough Napiers hot seat is making Kiffin's life hell because he is probably having to convince his team weekly he's not leaving for Florida. If Pittman and Stoops make bowl games they are fine. The problems in Oklahoma and Alabama is..

If they fire their coaches who is out there available and interested to replace them? UT created the roadmap and trust me people are taking note. If Alabama fire dEboer they could easily put themselves into purgatory for a decade like UT did firing Fulmer without a plan. You end up paying multiple coaches buyouts over the next decade because your fanbase is deluded and expect anyone to come in and win championships. The Dynasty died in Bama officially once Saban retired realistically about a year or two before. The Dynasty never existed in Oklahoma.

Good list! I’d add Hugh Freeze to this. Auburn is a dumpster fire.
As much as I hate to admit it, Auburn is a good qb away from being a good team. They were close to beating both Bama and Georgia last year. And they really should’ve beat Bama last year. They have deuce knight on the way and have a very nice recruiting class. Firing him now would be a big mistake that Auburn might literally not be able to afford. His buyout has to be pretty sizeable
