SEC Expansion (merged)

Im waiting for the, "There wouldnt be a state of Texas, if it were'nt for Tennessee" comment next. Mix that in with a jpeg. of the Cotton Bowl and I'd say we will have covered it all today.

Not needed since you realize it to be true, and don't ever forget it. I will not, I had three relatives die at the Alamo.

I'll get right on that right after you remind me how Kiffin didnt set Tennessee football back half a decade.

Of course, thats something Im pretty sure you and I have agreed on in the past.

We could end this you know? It would just take both of us to quit chunking rocks in our glass houses.

Tennessee's no worse off than they were when Kiffin arrived. If anything sets them back, it will be that they hired an incompetent Mayberry, RFD reject.

This is going to happen. The SEC is going to add at least 2 teams by this time next year. (Invites anyway)

They will or they may get left behind. TV money will go the conference with the most eye balls on the boob tube.:)

Don't know if this was already posted:

Status quo most likely option for SEC - SEC Blog - ESPN

The seeds of conference expansion are everywhere in college athletics.

Make that everywhere but the SEC.

The landscape in college athletics is poised to change as we know it. Nebraska and Missouri could be on their way to the Big Ten by the end of this week. The Pac-10 is ready to take just about everybody else out of the Big 12, and the Big East could also be on the verge of losing a team or two to the Big Ten.

Meanwhile, the SEC sits, waits and watches.

And in doing so, there’s a sense of contentment among SEC commissioner Mike Slive and the league presidents and athletic directors.

The general consensus last week at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla., was that the league liked its current lineup and wasn’t going to be in the business of raiding other conferences just for the sake of adding more schools.

The phrase that Slive keeps repeating is “strategic and thoughtful” as it relates to the SEC’s stance on expansion.

In other words, if there’s a chance to go get Texas or even Oklahoma if the Big 12 indeed starts to crumble, then the SEC would almost certainly make a pitch.

But the majority of the presidents, athletic directors and football coaches in the SEC are in favor of keeping the league right where it is with 12 schools -- regardless of what the Big Ten or Pac-10 does.

Still, that doesn’t mean the SEC wouldn’t be opportunistic.

Broadening the league’s borders would be favorable to some in the league, which would bring in new markets, create new recruiting territories and introduce SEC football to a brand new collection of fans.

The two schools that would probably fit that description best are Texas and Virginia Tech, two traditionally strong football schools and two entirely new markets to the SEC.

Ultimately though, the SEC will probably look the same way in 2012 as it does now.

If we don't expand and keep up with the other conferences the SEC will be left behind. Right now its probably just a smokescreen at the moment.

I agree with Slive's opinion. There is no need to expand. Now if Texas or Oklahoma or a similar school is out there for the plucking, then sure why not? But otherwise, we are fine as is.

Unless of course A&M is tired of living under Texas' shadow and wants to strike out on there own.

The guy from OrangeBloods did say on Memphis radio the other day that his A&M told him that the AD there did have some strong reservations about the PAC10 due to some of the logistics, especially with sports not named football.

Schools in the Big East and especially the WAC already have to travel comparable distances to the proposed Pac-16 on a fraction of the budget. They can figure it out.

I'm reading that right now. In my ideal, getting TAMU, TCU (to join the West) and Florida St., Miami (Fl) (to join the East) would be the dream scenario should the SEC expand.

Now, if it could be Texas instead of TCU, that would be so epic it'd be unfair to the other conferences. But, I don't see much reason for Texas to join the SEC. I think they'd rather become Independent like ND instead, but the Pac 10/Big 12 merger (which is essentially what it'd be) and the money that's on the table will probably win out.

But TCU, while smaller and less prestigious, is located in Ft. Worth. Getting the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, which is one of the biggest markets in the United States, would be major. TAMU is, I believe, the 2nd biggest university in Texas, and is about maybe 1 and a half hours away from Houston, another major market. TAMU and TCU would provide a concrete SEC foothold in Texas, bring in major TV money, and get SEC teams in front of eastern Texas high school students (which would benefit a school like UT greatly, as they have to recruit nationally).

I don't want to expand just to expand, but if we did and keeping my expectations realistic, then TAMU, TCU, FSU, and Miami are the ones I'd hope for the most. TAMU would probably be the top "get" among the 4.

It was not the budget that concerned him. I believe he was from Univ of Oregon previously in another capacity. It was more to do with fan travel, travel time, classes missed, etc.

Fine, class time. Whatever the case is, there are already conferences out there that have it worse.

Ruston and Honolulu are 4,000 miles apart. College Station and Seattle are about half that distance, even by car. They can figure it out.

who would the Big 12 add?? Houston? TCU? Rice? SMU?

If the PAC10 expands its going after Colorado, Utah, BYU, UNLV/Colorado St.

That means your big 12 looks like:
Texas
Texas Agricultural and Manufacturing
Baylor
TCU
Rice
Houston
SMU
Texas Tech
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St.
Kansas
Kansas St.
Iowa St.
plus maybe Boise St.

I don't think there is anyway Texas would prefer that conference lineup to the SEC.

There just isn't anyway the Big 12 could compete with the expansion of the Pac10, BigTen, SEC, ACC

**That was fun:crazy:

I am impressed

After what I learned last night, here's how I see it. We either follow t.u. to the Pac10 along with tech and the Oklahomas, or we land in the SEC west and still maintain our Thanksgiving Day game with t.u. That's one hell of an OOC if you ask me.

Im thinking I better start studying up on travel accomodations in the state of Arizona and L.A. proper.

I find it interesting Slive and the president of A&M have been talking since April. Granted we don't know to what extent they've been talking, it's still interesting that they're at least listening to the SEC.
