I think some Tennessee fans root for our SEC rivals do so just they can feel better because we lost to them. Dooley supporters always touted our opponent's ranking as a justification for us losing to them.
Oh my, where to start. I wasn't diminishing anything about 98. I was just pointing out the conference as a whole wasn't as strong then and it worked out pretty well for us.
I'm not rooting for bama to lose, but I'm definitely not cheering for a rival that we compete against for recruits to win. This SEC ra ra for rivals to win everytime they play a nonconference opponent is stupid.
As for the last quote of yours I put in bold.......its moronic.
Oh how quickly we forget how lucky Tennessee was in 1998. To help refresh your memory and to conclusively prove that a strong SEC is beneficial to ALL SEC teams let me take you back to 1998.
Going into the last week of the 1998 regular season three teams were undeafeated UCLA, Kansas State and Tennessee. Guess who was rated third and was going to be left out of the NC game? If you answered Tennessee you would be correct. Just like Auburn was rejected in 2004, Tennessee would have been rejected in 1998. The reason, of course, is that the SEC was perceived to be the 4th best conference back then behind the Big 10, Big 12 and the PAC.
Fortunately for Tennessee UCLA was upset in the last game by Miami and K State lost the first Big 12 championship game resulting in Tennessee backing into the NC game.
Now think about this ... what do you think would happen today if three teams finished the season undefeated and one of them was an SEC team?
It's a no-brainer right? Of course the SEC would get in the NC game.
Why?
Because the SEC has clearly demonstrated their dominance in recent years by winning NC games, bowl games and high profile OOC games all of which has resulted in the SEC being reconized as the nation's best conference.
This, my friend is why the knowledgeable SEC fan realizes that "to ra ra for rivals to win everytime they play a nonconference opponent is NOT stupid".
Talk about mixed emotions, Bama, ND, Bama, ND
It's kind of like seeing your mother in law drive over a cliff, but in your new car
Mixed emotions:birgits_giggle:
Tennessee was #1 in the BCS rankings starting the week of 11/9/1998. They didn't back into a damn thing. The only thing changing with the losses by UCLA and K State was who the Vols would play.
That my friend, is why people should have their facts straight before making assertions of their vast SEC "knowledge"
Merica' by gawd! Cut that skynard up..
All this SEC dominance hasn't worked out well for Tennessee.. It does no good for these teams around us to win titles and championships, just makes things harder.. Screw them.. I hope they all lose...
