SEC Network- How Long You Gonna Wait?

Is in the last few days or happening soon? Could have sworn CSS is still showing up on my BTES in the tricities. Think some of the SEC baseball tourney and skimmed through and saw "Talkin Football" listed just a few days ago. Maybe a week at most, haven't watched TV much last several days

June 1st, CSS is gone, that's another reason to switch to Dish.

I'm aware this thread deals with the SEC Network and such network's providers. This is for those who like me seek to cut the cable umbilical cord.

First, a respectful nod to the wisdom of VN'ers (not an oxymoron all the time) who cautioned that going that route would deny yourselves access to broadcasted Vols game. This probably is true but of course being stubborn as I am, I contend I'll still find a way to get them.

Second, I mentioned Mohu amplified antenna here previously. I got it, I tested it. I share this for those who care to know:

1. if you live way out in the boondocks and I do, the number of receptive channels will likely be very limited.

2. in my case at least, the picture quality is stunning! I thought my cable (DTV) provided darn fine HDTV picture quality. HA!!!!! Mohu beats them by 620 and 8/10th of a mile. It's just shocking.

3. Be advised that the HD cable (white) that connects the regular cable to your TV and also plugs into your wall socket via USB enabled plug isn't what they say. As a matter of fact, this device blocks the channel 4 your TV may need to draw the signal in. Some regions use channel 2 or 3, mine was 4. When I removed the amplifier, my antenna worked.

4. Don't necessarily trust your TV's channel scanner. Mine lied. It said I had only 4 channels. I accepted that because knowing I live way outside of any major city or town, I had expected it. Lo and behold, Shirley picked up the remote and started clicking it in frustration despite my warning of having only 4 channels. THEN, channel after channel showed, including stuff I didn't even know were TV shows. i grabbed the remote, went back to channel scan. Still said only 4 channels.

If you care to explore OTA further, here's info that comes form people a whole lot smarter than I can hope to be.

Antenna Basics

Next step for me: As soon as TWC installs my Extreme 30Mbps connection, I will set up the ROKU and start exploring what I can get sports-wise. If anyone is interested, I'll post my results here if and only IF I think I found access to Vols games without being forced to have a cable TV service. If you hear absolutely nothing from me, it's because the wise ones here at VN are irrevocably right. However, I will respond to questions about ROKU if I think I can provide a helpful answer.

I talked to Comcast in Nashville on Friday and they said the SEC Network would be available to subscribers no later than August 15. No info on cost yet.

There is no way that Direct doesn't have a deal in place by the start of the season. It would be disastrous for business in the South. I'm not worried at all.

Does Dish internet have any usage limits ? This is the main reason I keep Comcast because its unlimited (so far)

Keep Comcast for Internet and phone, I did, and they cut me a great deal to stay, especially when I told them I was switching because they did not even know what the SEC Network is or when it starts. I have been impressed with Dish so far, their DVR has a huge capacity, and I can watch my list from anywhere on my iPad.

PAC 12 Network will not even be on the same planet as the SEC Network when it comes to ratings, especially for football.

If DirecTV doesn't sign-on by August, you may have trouble getting Dish installed by the launch of SEC Network. I would expect them to be swamped with new installs come August if everyone starts dumping DirecTV.

I currently pay Comcast for literally every channel they offer. All of them. (I'm not bragging. I hate doing it, but in order to get the few channels that I consider must-haves, I had to sign up for the largest, all-encompassing package). This includes the expanded sports package. If I have to pay even more for the SEC network, on top of already paying for their entire lineup, Ima gonna be pissed.

ROKU UPDATE

OK, this is very likely my last comments regarding viewing Vols games without cable service.
Kindly bear with me while I gave those interested a complete rundown of my experience.

Short Background

Originally, I was switching DISH because they have the SEC Network already. And because my DIRECTV monthly charged had climbed to a ridiculous figure. Their negotiation was just an out and out ripoff that I refused. Then I got ticked off with DISH for blatantly lying to me about not having a 24/month requirement for the 12/month offer. Fed up, I decided to cut cable out of my life and find an alternative. I opted for a combination of OTA TV viewing and ROKU. Here’s my experience to date in case someone else is heading the way I went.

OTA TV

The MOHU antenna had to be positioned higher to receive more channels. The channels are shocking clearer than what I was getting via DirecTV. I never expected that level of clarity. I see all my local channels plus channels I never knew existed, including some that focus on international stations that include India for example. And to my surprise, I even got a religious cable channel when I switched the TV from antenna to cable scan even though I no longer am connected to my disk. It too was crystal clear. NO! NO! Don’t ask me anything about this. I don’t even know why or how this is possible but being curious, I looked into it.

ROKU

The selection of free channels is dizzying, fun (for me), and even at 720i amazingly clear. Now, a few words. Before I made the jump. I purchased a ZOOM 5341J dual band cable modem and a Netgear AC1900 Smart Router NightHawk. Prior, I had a Zoom DSL modem/router combo. It was “OK” but not for streaming wireless to a device in another room without periodic frustrations of buffering. Separate modem and router setups have their own individual processors and dedicate their functions fully to one task. There is no lag with 5mhz channel streaming to the ROKU except ROKU’s own buffering when switching from ads to the selected featured viewing or one feature to another. Plus no one but me in my neighborhood is using the 5mhz channel so it’s ultra fast. Viewing ROKU is a real pleasure.

Paid Channels

I haven’t picked any I care about yet as I’m hunting for a means to access Vols games without having cable. So far, as one wise fan told me, it ain’t happening. But I’m one of those people who just won’t quit unless you ram a baby nuke up my rear then tape the detonator to my eyelid so that if I blink the nuke goes off. That being said, I think I’ve found a way to do it. But I’m not posting it here. No, I’m not selfish or being a prick. I’m trying to preserve the access. Here’s why. Lottery and casino officials ask winners what they did to win. Sounds innocent, but what they do is document the answers. Then further rig the game in their favor to lessen further loses. Same thing with businesses, they want to know what you know and then use that information to set up ways to force further revenue from you. The way I see it, they don’t pay me a consulting fee, why should I answer their questions or give away my information? Sharing it here, it will find its way to the powers that be and they will invoke IP and other tracking means to prevent such access. Is it legal? Technically, YES, but let’s just say under certain circumstances, it’s not encouraged. So let me just say, if you haunt forums about viewing live broadcasts, sports etc without cable, you will discover what I did.

Be sure to select the feature that requires a PIN to order pay channels to avoid being credit card charged by accident.

Select best ROKU for you. Watchout for misleading words like free TV live online for free. Some selections are deceptive. But so far as I’ve seen, you can quite a channel anytime.

Over the air antenna is actually the best picture quality that you can get. The compression is what hurts cable and satellite.

Here's a great site to check out the channels available to you and the kind of antenna you will need.

I got a figure from Uverse. I was told the 200 & 300 subscribers would get it at no extra charge. I hope they would because it was gonna cost me $20/month. I currently have Comcast for cable and Uverse for internet. It didn't make any sense to me, I'm gonna call again and see if I get a different rate.

Just an FYI, that SEC On Demand channel is run by XOS and will go away when their contract with the SEC to run their website and online distribution runs out at the end of this month. All of that content will move to ESPN online platforms.
