SEC Power Rankings Week One

I like this guy. I'm not quite sure why everyone's briefs are in a bunch. We totally lucked out in '98, not that I'd apologize even one second for that blessing. I actually thought the '99 team was better... Guess that's why they play the games.

As far as the Vols of Team 119... I am on record, 10-2. My confidence is unshaken. OU has a program of great historical relevance. A win against them will, imo, be a launching point of the next great era of Tennessee football.

If you look at almost all national championship teams, there is a point in the year where some "luck" is involved. It is a long season and fortunate things happen. Not sure how playing MSU in the SECG was luck because we played three other west teams that year and obviously beat them.

I think Stoops can take them all the way to their 8 game ceiling. JMO

I was just astounded that a UK fan was saying that we needed a new coach. Who has done better in 2 years- Stoops or Butch Jones? UT is obviously a better program, but recruiting is half the battle, and Butch Jones knocks that part out of the park.

Stoerner's fumble was the single luckiest thing I can remember in the last 20 years of college football. LSU's hail mary vs UK and Auburn's "kick 6" are close.

Don't forget the Miracle at Jordan Hare...I honestly think that play on 4th and forever was luckier than the "kick 6"...AND IT HAPPENED BACK TO BACK WEEKS. Incredible.

The Nebraska "kick catch" in their championship year. I believe Colorado got 5 downs in a close game in their championship year. Auburn had several lucky breaks in their run to the title game. Just happens. And...many times luck is created by good plays. I have a longtime friend who is a good golfer and I always thought he was lucky, but he also creates his luck because he is good. Just the way it goes.

Well I didn't rank LSU because they didn't play..so you can eliminate that. Ole Miss has lost more than 2 years in a row to Arkansas and Auburn? If so then I missed that memo and I apologize.

Wait, you award rankings based on whether or not a team plays? Does that make sense to you?

You missed my point... But I agree "backing" is the wrong word.
Maybe totally lucked out is better.
stoerner drops the ball
5 loss Mississippi State winning the West
Weinke being injured for National Title game.

(Right, which was why I mentioned it. There wasn't any backing in.)

Yeah but everyone needs luck at some point in a championship season.

I'm not sure anyone other than the 90s Nebraska teams and 2001 Miami have been dominant enough from start to finish that they haven't needed some...have they?

(Although playing 8-3 Mississippi State in 1998 - which would be more like 9-3 with the current 12 game schedule - is just more of a case of playing who you have to play...they beat the better Arkansas team by a point, leaving the 9-2 Arkansas team on the wrong end of the tiebreaker (Miss St's third loss was to Ok St, so they had the same number of SEC losses)).

That was a great post.

Exactly. All you care about is the Tennessee was the National Champions. That's all that matters. Who cares how it happened. I feel the same way about the 2014 Buckeyes. They won the title playing their 3rd string QB. Sorry they didnt have to play through the SEC "gauntlet" to do it.

Good points in your post though.

I think Auburn's Miracle on the Plains against UGA has to be in there...maybe even more than the kick 6.

And a new coach, no offense

You mean the coach that's kicked the shiite out of your JV coach by a combined 77-30 score the last 2 years? Our coach would've hung 70 on your middle school team last year if he hadn't pulled the starters after 3 quarters.

Yeah, you have a ton of credibility. For crying out loud, STFU and go look forward to bball season cause that's all you got. Offense taken.

Fun fact, you know who was on the receiving end of those plays?

Shiite?
And glad to know UK has become your barometer for success.

It's not. Just awfully stupid to come on another fan forum and tell em they need to fire the coach who's kicked the ISH your team the last two years. Don't you think? How about you worry about your 8-17 coach...you know, the guy who damn near lost to lowly Louisiana-Lafayette 2 days ago.

This is the NCAA forum and an SEC thread, you have no preference to any other poster when you enter here. I didn't say fire Butch, keep him for 40 years for all I care. We had a premiere basketball program that had a pretty good coach who could never get us back to elite status. Your football program has fallen that far, our boosters were tired of **** coaches And we now have an elite coach and our program is once again the benchmark. Just thought you'd like to see your benchmark program return to that status as well. No need to be an angry elf b

I am an avid poker player and believe wholeheartedly you create what seems to be good luck through preparation, knowledge, and skill.

I am also perfectly aware that I've made some boneheaded decisions only to get bailed out on the river, haha.

That was definitely overlooked, my bad.

I'd still put Stoerner's fumble at the top. Damn thing was almost as preposterous as Matt Sanchez's buttfumble.

I think Kat is a little riled up. No way UT needs a new coach. I do think Butch has still to prove a lot though.

That being said, there's no reason to even compare UT to UK. UT has decades and decades of dedication to that program. UK has the same, but in basketball and never cared for football. It's the way we went, going back to the 1950s. UK football nearly found it's footing with Brooks, before Joker killed some of the momentum (yet beat UT fwiw). Stoops has done as much as he could in the first couple years. We were competitive against teams that were better than UT. There are similarities to the state of each program, but UT has a crazy high ceiling because of it's past and recruiting situation.

You do know that the name of the website is VolNation.com, no? All of it....you don't get to the "SEC thread" without first coming to VolNation.com....as in, the Tennessee Vols.

I wouldn't presume to go into another team's fan site and talk ish about their football coach...especially one that's handed my team their collective ass the last 2 years.

And tell me again, why exactly do you think we should fire the guy who's doing a damn good job rebuilding a once-great powerhouse program coming off the worst 5-6 year stretch of football in school history. One of only 3 teams that can claim a top 5 recruiting class each of the last 2 seasons, first win vs a top 25 team in several years in 2013, first winning season since 2009, first bowl win since 2008....yeah, great decision, let's fire the guy.

Stick with UK "football" would you? You more than have your own hands full there.

I didn't compare the 2 programs. Just told him to mind his own damn business and not be arrogant enough to come onto our site and tell us we need to fire our coach. It's both stupid and asinine. Also, how competitive was UK vs UT last year? 50-16 competitive iirc.

I never said fire him, but I don't think he'll take you to the Bama/OSU level either.

And what do you say to people claiming UT will just as good as Bama in a year or two? I think it's a push. Not crazy, but a stretch.

No one compared UT and UK. You brought that up because you didn't like the backhanded comment. It's one of the classic crutches of any VN'er when a UK fan posts anything negative. Is it stupid to have a few doubts of a coach who has never had a major win over anyone other than USCjr? I'm not sure. I certainly don't think UT will fire Butch soon. He's done more for the program in 2 years than most coaches could ever do.

I say that's ridiculous. "Just as good as Bama" implies we'd be able to rattle off 3 national titles in 4 years and we all know that's not happening. However, be competitive with Bama this year and beat them next year at home? Yeah, that's doable. Challenging for the SECe this year and actually being the favorite to win it next year? You bet.

No one compared UT and UK, including me. I was the one accused of doing it, which I didn't. And yes, most if not all rational UT fans still have questions about Butch at this point, I'm one of em. All I said was I don't want to hear a fan of a poor program which our current coach has owned to date come into our fan forum and tell us that we need to get rid of our coach if we want to win at a high level. It's asinine IMO.
