SECT Game Thread: Lady Vols 74 - Kentucky 83

Well, well, well....... look who's in the semi finals. CKH. And look who's not. CKM. And guess who hasn't shown up to comment about that? I mean, after all, "coaching matters"...............

I need to start a thread - Was Kym Mulkey a good hire for LSU? and then stary another thread- Should LSU have hired Kellie?-- and then start another thread - would LSU be better if they had Kellie as a coach? and then start another thread.....

The good news is Key should be well rested and Walker didn't get to play that much either. Miles played a fabulous game tonight. Burrell was the Burrell we like. Darby played really well. The star of the game was Dye she got us the lead and we never gave it up.

Miles rocked it! Her best game of the season.

A Dominant Performance. Let that sink in. How long since we heard that? Couldn't have come at a better time. Guess this means we're hosting!

What a great defensive effort, especially on Davis. Career game for Dye, and for Miles. I was thinking maybe next year Powell and Miles can be our version of Chandler and Zeigler. Miles' motor is the only one on campus equal to Zerigler's. What a gift she has been this season.

My favorite moment, and I think the most important in a long time, was in the 3rd qtr when they cut the lead to 12 and in response, the Prodigal Rae came home! 11 pts later, the game was over. Darby also had a big basket during that stretch. She had a fine game.

I learned a long time ago that KJH really does know what she's doing with her rotation, but there were still times I was yelling "how's that group supposed to score?" But props to her for gambling against a very tired team and saving alot of important legs for tomorrow. Wynn played pretty well, but nerve wracking as always. Lots of frosh got important tourney experience. Also, props to the coaches for having them absolutely ready from the get go.

So glad KY beat LSU and I thought Mulkey was far out of line. Looked like she took a poke at that ref! Or two. Anyway, as someone said upthread, hopefully tomorrow will be one of Howard's scheduled days off. I'll bet the newly revived Rae Burrell will have something to say about that. She's locked her down before!

I've always liked Kristy Curry but dang, she looked like a serial killer.
Darby's defense on Barber was noteworthy

Rae had 7 assists tonight as well. So, that really is stepping up to help fill the Horston void. I do like how the starts are aligning. KY played its game of the season and the LVs had a comfortable win but were pushed hard to work off any rust from their extended break. If Ole Miss can pull an upset....

When discussing Tennessee and turnovers, I used to think VolNation was all stocked up on crazy. As posters with unusual names, explained how Coach Harper had never seen a turnover she didn't like. But after tonight, I have to admit I was wrong. So, what I have learned is 23 turnovers are too many.

I called Coach Harper to give her the skinny but got her voice mail. Of course, her message was "Thanks for your postive message. Can't take your call right now. The staff and I are game planning for our Semi-final game in the SEC Tournament. Have a nice night."

Subtle, well done. 😁

Thank You to LSU for beating us last week and making us a 3 seed. I don’t think we would have beaten Kentucky yesterday the way they (especially Howard) was playing. This will be their third game in three days so they should be getting tired (I hope).

Alabama is not that good and I think playing their third game in three days showed and we played with a lot of energy. I admit that I only saw the first half. From what I saw, we were playing well as a team. Tough on defense, taking pretty good shots, definite height advantage but some of those passes were atrocious.

I think Kentucky will not have as much adrenaline today and Howard will have more of an average game. This will be their third game So hopefully their shots will be off a little bit and they may be a step slower on defense. If we play with the energy I saw last night, I think we win but I expect a much closer game than last night.

The “hell of a game” yesterday was the the Miami/Louisville game. Hardin from Miami scored the last 15 points of the game including a buzzer beater to beat Louisville by 2. I guess Jeff Walz isn’t much of a coach either since they couldn’t protect a 15 point lead with about 4 minutes to go.

I’m just going to say it the stuff I’ve read since watching this Tenn team all season is the same on this forum after every game.
In contrast, you go over to Twitter where these players, parents, recruits, basketball analysts, etc are really paying attention the discussion and perception of this same Tenn team is so much more positive and exciting about the team.
The naysayers might just have to admit sooner rather than later that it’s a waste of time to repeatedly beat at the same ole, same ole every single game..
Reality is just this week Tenn moves to 23-7, the team gave us an incredible performance against Alabama, projected as a 2 or 3 seed in the NCAA tournament, gets a commit from Jasmine Powell former 4⭐⭐⭐⭐️ & ESPN Top100 PG… last but certainly not least Twitterverse is a lot closer to reality than Volnation will ever be!
Today, tomorrow, or nothing else will change that fact. Great time to be a Vol🍊🍊.. Boom💥!

Before the tournament started, I decided to look at Kentucky's recent games because it seemed that had been doing better. I had no idea that they were doing as well as they are. Here are their last 9 results. Yes, some aren't against the best teams but note how their margins of victory got bigger during the last 5 games (at least 15). Kyra may have saved her job. Here are their last 9 games in terms of win-loss and margins.
S, Carolina - Loss by 9 points (impressive though a loss)
Bama - Win by 4
Miss St - Win by 4
Vandy - win by 4
Arkansas - win by 23
Miz - win by 15
Auburn - win by 38 (gulp)
Miss. St - win by 16
LSU - win by 15.
I am not posting this to predict that they will beat us. I personally say it is 50:50 if we play like we have the past game and a half (2nd half of LSU), but it is clear that their tourney seed is meaningless in terms of how good they are. They are definitely peaking at the right time and they are likely to upset some higher seed in the NCAA. Hopefully, we can end their current winning streak tonight
