SECT Game Thread: Lady Vols 74 - Kentucky 83

In the first match, it Jordan H. that made Howard want to curl into a fetal position. Rae did a good job on her as well. But someone needs to fill in for Jordan defensively. If Wynn is smart and just concentrates on making Howard work to get the ball and just staying in front of her, that could do it. It is the old thing, scorers are going to score but it is okay is those points come hard.

Yes, Kaiya can definitely be of benefit there, Walker and Miles may get a turn also. Making it hard for her to catch is the key. They want to run so much through her it completely disrupts their offense if you deny her the basketball.

Yep we need someone to bring that Jordan defense maybe Wynn can do it while she is in there and maybe Rae as well. Have to keep Rae out of foul trouble Wynn can use her five fouls to be aggressive if need be. Can't let Howard get 32 points and shoot 61 percent from the field. That was the LSU demise. The rest of the team only 38 percent much rather those players being doing most of the shooting.

I hope she does more of that stepping around the defender and burying the mid-range 2-pt jumper --- we really need more of that

P.S. I also loved it when the LVs pressed in the backcourt --- should do more of that with Key back in the lane as safety valve

this is my suggestion for KT today,,,OTB defense deny deny deny,,,this game will be won at post play and decided in guard-play

Howard toys with smaller defenders,,,matching her size for size is key,,,burrell, wynn, darby...use miles and walker for their transition players

I can’t wait for Rhyne Howard to be gone she has given SEC teams nothing but nightmares for 4 years

She makes shots go in the basket almost what seems like 99.9 % of the time.
I don't hate her. I'm still mad at her that she didn't come play for us. I know all about the story of why she didn't .... I get it. I don't need to hear it again.

Just the opposite CJ, she struggles vs smaller quick defenders who can strip the ball on her dribble, she has little problem getting her shot off against taller players, she creates space too easily and they cannot create the turnover prior to her moves. Have to harass her with quickness before while she is still handling the ball prior to her shot.

did you watch the LSU game,,,they tried with smaller guards and Howard went off,,,this only worked earlier in her career when no one expected that type of def-game-plan,,,now that Howard expects it, she toys with the smaller guards as evident by her outburst last game

Rhyne said herself LSU gave her too much space and that she will shoot when given some space

Her outburst was due to no LSU defender challenging her handles before she went to her create my shot mode….The defender need not be smaller (see Beal for instance), but usually an elite defender with better quickness comes in smaller packages, though not always. Amihere is much taller and shuts her down because she is a freak athlete. Have to have elite athlete on her and that depends on your roster as far as size, but absolutely has to be a player that can harass her dribble.

agree with this,,,you cannot let any proficient scorer get comfortable,,,got to be handsy, both off the ball and especially on the ball...denial D is going to be the deciding factor...But I would be leery of letting her be guarded by a smaller guard after she shot OVER LSU's smalls

A healthy Burrell was her worst nightmare last season. Hopefully we see some of that desire from Rae today. She played well against Kentucky earlier this season. Would be great to see her put together two solid games in a row.

Rae would pick up fouls being dedicated to RH, and is she the best one to harass RH off the dribble right now?

she needs to work on passing
Agreed 100%, but in likelihood, the coaches will watch that film with her and teach her the better pass to make. If I recall, both passes that turned into turnovers were skip passes from the top of the key that didn't connect. Now the coaches can look at that with Karolyn and give a better option, or work with her making that type of pass.

That couldn't come too soon. Maybe Rae is starting to round into Mid-Season form due to the extended layoff earlier.
