Seeking interviews for prospective short documentary - Schiano Sunday

I seem to remember that Currie went on the lam after the Schiano backlash and made a verbal agreement with Mike Leach for the position.
He went after Mike Gundy first, and was turned down. Then he tried to hire Jeff Brohm, who said no. Then moved on to Dave Doeren, who (thankfully) said no. He then went off the grid and flew to California to meet with Leach. Funny thing is, had he just gone to leach after either Gundy or Brohm said no, he probably would have gotten the hire pushed through.

It’s been a while since I read the book but I’d forgotten how big of a clustercluck it was.

I can't wait to see your documentary. :)

Some key tidbits for you to include:
-- Greg Schiano just went 7-6, again, at Rutgers
-- He has a losing record, lifetime, as a college head coach: 94-101 (.482)
-- Meanwhile, Josh Heupel's 2024 campaign went 10-3, and his lifetime record as a head coach is 65-23 (.739)
-- And that doesn't even include the vast differences in their value systems.
-- Yes, we had to go through 3 years of Pruitt to get here, but it was certainly worth it. Much better than rusting in mediocrity with Schiano for any length of time.

Go Vols!
Schiano has rebuilt Rutgers into winners twice and no one else has been able to do that.

Not true for many. There was too much evidence of a cover up by Schiano as a PSU GA is on record informing Schiano about Sandusky’s actions. Schiano, like many at PSU, didn‘t inform the proper authorities. Coach Paterno did inform his boss, who did nothing.
But that's not why people flipped their lid...they flipped their lid because he's a horrible coach and people wanted better....then everyone was like, "oh yeah, and the Sandusky stuff."

I was unaware of his history other than he was a decent coach at Rutgers and took over The Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I just knew he was awful with the Bucs and was so pissed off when I herd he was our pick.

Excuse me?

Greg Schiano went 68-67 his first stint at Rutgers. That's one and a half games above a LOSING RECORD. Over ELEVEN years.

I don't classify barely-not-losers as winners. Not really. At best, I'd call it mediocre.

Here were his finishes in the weak conference Rutgers was in at the time (the Big East): 8th ... 8th ... 7th ... 6th ... 3rd ... tied for 2nd ... tied for 5th ... tied for 2nd ... tied for 4th ... 8th ... and tied for 4th.

He had only one season with double-digit wins, in 2006. That...THAT...is the great grand laurel Greg Schiano's career rests upon. One really good season where he got to 11-2 and came in 2nd. In his weak conference.

~ ~ ~

And that's the good news for Rutgers fans. Because, while you say he "rebuilt Rutgers into winners twice," His record the second go-round so far is 26-34. Yes, that's a losing record over a five-year stretch. His BEST season in the second coming has been 7-6. His best. A 6-6 regular season, followed by a win in the Pinstripe Bowl.

~ ~ ~

As for him being slightly bigger than the other midgets who have coached at Rutgers, even that isn't true.

-- The fella who succeeded Schiano in 2012, Kyle Flood, went 27-24 over four seasons. Yes, a winning record. Better than Schiano has done on his return. And had a 9-4 and an 8-5 season in those four years, both better than Schiano's second coming.
-- A guy named Frank Burns (not making this up) likewise had a winning record at Rutgers over an 11-year stretch, including one 11-0 season, 78-43 record overall, from 1973-1983. Significantly better than either of Schiano's tenures.
-- A coach named John Stiegman went 14-4 in 1958-1959.
-- His successor, John Bateman, went 17-1 in 1960-1961.

I could continue going back in time, there are others who won significantly better than Schiano in Rutgers' history. But really, how many examples do you need?

~ ~ ~

Greg Schiano is not a great coach. I'm not even sure he's a good coach. And the word from both his NFL stint and his time at Penn State is that he might just be a miserable human being.

Glad we dodged him. Even at the cost of three years of Pruitt, it was worth it. Our university will never be tainted with his touch.

Go Vols!

He would have no chance of winning in court, which is why he didn't sue. We hadn't signed the contract.

If Davenport had signed that deal, we would have owed him whatever buyout amount was given in the deal.

If the whole damn administration and faculty had signed the contract Schiano still wasn’t going to sue. That’s been my point all along. Whooo!

There's a good book written by a lady, Celine Something or another that documents the whole thing. I have a copy in my kindle, somewhere. She has since died, but it was a good read.
Celina Summers and Tom Mattingly wrote the book, entitle Empowered. Check.it out.

I remember it being a 3 strikes and you’re out kind of deal. UT had just made 3 sub par coaching hires in a row and the best college fan base in the nation felt like we deserved better for this next hire (which I agree with). Currie seemed smug when he was constantly asked about the next hire. IIRC, he finally made a statement that the hire was going to be a big deal, a home run hire, a major statement and so on. Of course, when it leaked that is was going to be Schiano, our fans went insane. “Really!!! A .500 lifetime coach from the powerhouse Rutgers!!! This is the home run hire”. I think our fans felt insulted that our storied program had set the bar so low. Obviously the allegations about PSU made the choice even worse. I got the the breaking news and the call for fans to protest from Basilio’s website like many others. While the end result of Fulmer/Pruitt wasn’t any better, I think it at least sent the message that fans would not respond kindly to our Admin devaluing our program any more.

I and many others certainly werent … if you are ok w pedophiles and enablers , says more about you
Holy cow...what a leap. That's not what I'm saying. Most had no idea about the connection until after everyone was already "rioting". An overwhelming majority, doesn't mean everyone, was frustrated about the football aspects, not the moral integrity issues. Once they found that out, they had already thrown their fit, but used it as added ammo to justify their actions.

I would hope that if you're doing this for a class project, that these facts are not particularly relevant.
If you're trying to get visitors to your youtube channel, it might be OK.

Maybe someone at the News-Sentinel? I recall they reported that Haslam was on the plane when they went to sign Derek Dooley. The Schiano Sunday seems to be a rank-and-file revolt.

John Currie's biggest achievement as an athletic director was hiring Tony Vitello for the Tennessee baseball program.

Football fans, including Tennessee fans, were well-aware of the child rape scandal involving the coaching staff at Penn State.

For all of Paterno's & Sandusky's character flaws and criminality, they had brilliant football minds. For them to keep Schiano on the defensive staff for half a decade speaks a lot about his ability as a coach. He was on the Penn State staff when they defeated Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl and the Citrus Bowl. Also, he inherited a Rutgers team that had won only 11 games in five years combined under Terry Shea and won 11 games just in the 2006 season alone under Schiano, a remarkable job. Schiano was a lot more proven than Pruitt, particularly as a head coach, but nobody rioted and burned mattresses when Pruitt was hired because Alabama's corruption and criminality issues closely resembled Tennessee's, hence the Fulmer Cup. Gun charges, pot smoking? Okay, those are cultural norms in SEC sports, especially Knoxville. Systemic child rape? No, that's a norm in the predominately Catholic regions of our country, not SEC Country.

A more fun documentary would be on the night Lane Kiffin bolted.

Schiano Sunday was just embarrassing for the football program and so… slimy. Currie was such a dip$&!+ for even entertaining the idea, and then he let Mike Gundy play us for another raise for the 2nd time in 5 years.

I didn’t approve the way the fans went about it. Schiano had nothing to do with Sandusky and didn’t deserve to be painted as some kiddy diddler enabler. Clay Travis took one 2nd hand quote that was unproven and amplified it with the fan base. It was unsettling.

Now that being said, Currie was too stupid to read the room temperature. You don’t let a fan base like Tennessee work itself up into a frenzy only to bring in Schiano. If you let the situation escalate like he did, then you better swing for the fences. His backup plan for Schiano? LOL Dave Doeren. At least Fulmer had the sense to allegedly sabotage that one.

Currie and Hamilton were both dip$h!ts, but the whole Hart/Currie era really tested my patience.

Plus Schiano Sunday also led to Fulmer as AD and we know how that ended- our NC winning coach proving all the naysayers correct and face planting in front of the whole country.
Even funnier if it concluded with Kiffin getting fired on the tarmac. (At least, that's the lore)
