Seeking interviews for prospective short documentary - Schiano Sunday

Yeah...once again you're not hearing what I'm saying. Everyone knew about Penn State, paterno, and Sandusky. Most Vol fans didn't connect that to Schiano. That's just fact. Now, once the connection was made, people used it to justify their actions. Remember, people wanted Gruden or another big name. The search had been tied to so many different coaches at that point. The reason people were ok with Pruitt was because of Fulmer. People believed in Fulmer, and trusted Fulmer. As far as your Catholic statement is concerned, it's simply not true.
Aaron, you're saying "everyone" and "most" as if you have surveys from back then. But perhaps you don't; perhaps you're just extrapolating from what YOU knew at the time.

I can tell you for certain, I was already very aware of Schiano's alleged role in the Penn State scandal when word got out that Currie was courting him. My _first_ objection had to do with his lack of character, lack of values. His mediocre on-field results were a concern as well, but #1 was his slimy and abrasive character.

Were a lot of folks seeing it as I did? Seemed so to me. I remember several conversations on these boards about Schiano's character, his baggage, and us not wanting to be associated with him. So I know there were others. But I'm not self-focused enough to start throwing out "most" or "many" adjectives. I don't know.

And that's how it goes. We will probably never know what percentage of the revolt was about character versus win/loss records. Only thing we can say for sure: it was a mixture of both.

Go Vols!

Of course "everyone" doesn't mean everyone, but in terms of football fans it's pretty close. My point, and to continue to say this is useless at this point, is most fans were frustrated with the coaching search, Currie's handling of it, the coaches seemingly turning us down, etc. When Schiano news broke, and students filed out onto campus, it was initially, for the majority, the football side of things. We believed we deserved better. This was apparent. Then, as the dots were connected to PSU it continued. But he was hired shortly afterwards and that school didn't blink an eye. It's not that we are more morally upstanding, we simply love football more and wanted a winner. That's the narrative I'm more prone to believe.

All Sandusky creepiness aside, all mediocre coaching records aside, all a-hole personality aside ... this guy formed by his connections with Ohio State, Penn State and New Jersey was a horrible cultural fit for East Tennessee and our Vol traditions, and we could plainly see that. Once all of those things were sifted together, it was a true WTF situation.

Sandusky and here we are just a couple years later and they played in the semi ..Always thought it odd how joe pa passed away so quick and the sweeping under the rug began ..Case broke in November 2011, and ole Joe was "dead" by January 2012

All is well at least Notre Damed won..
The irony

That's all well and good to say now, 8 years removed from when it happened aaronvol. However, you have to take into account how fresh on everyone's minds the Penn State scandal still was back then. I cannot speak for everyone. I can only tell you how I felt at the time all that was happening.

When the Penn State scandal broke, I was extremely outraged and shocked and ANGRY! Not just at Jerry Sandusky, but at that entire coaching staff, administration, and community that had not only turned a blind eye to what was happening but also created a culture in that community that allowed it to manifest! I actually talked to a woman from there and she told me that the rumors of Jerry Sandusky's sexual proclivities had been swirling around there for years! She said it had actually become a running joke around the community. So much so that there was a local ice cream shop up there that had actually named one of it's flavors "The Sandusky" as a "wink, wink" to the rumor! In my personal opinion, I don't think Penn State was punished enough! I thought the entire Penn State football program should've been completely cratered and taken away. THAT is how pissed off I was at what had happened up there and why to this day I will never pull for them!

I say all that to say, back in 2017, the very thought of someone who was even remotely associated with that program coming to OUR university, soured my stomach! You can say all you like, regarding a lack of evidence to show that Schiano had any knowledge of what was going on, but frankly I don't care! The stench of that scandal was on everyone who was there at the time! Now, you can debate whether that's fair or unfair all you like. But I did not want anyone who was even remotely associated with that Penn State administration at our university! If Schiano was from ANY other program, I guarantee the outrage would not have been what it was. Would a good number of fans felt let down after thinking Gruden was coming? Sure! But I don't think you're giving our fanbase enough credit here, regarding the motives behind the outrage.

The choice was a very poor cultural match, well below the standards that should be considered for a storied program with a 120 history (regardless of the 10 year decade of dysfunction), was not any kind of upgrade over the past 3 coaches, and the PSU connection further intensified this line of thought. Dropping the mic…..

Once again...and at this point it's a bit much to keep responding. It was 6 years after the Sandusky issue, so it wasn't that fresh on people's minds. Most (maybe not you or others...but most people) didn't associate Schiano with that issue. He was a failed football coach at the time. I have no idea if schiano had any knowledge. My point is that for MOST people the issue was at FIRST that Schiano was a bad football hire.
