Clinton was a sitting president and incredibly popular. There was a lot of self-interest in defending him. Besides which, there was an strong element of overkill in the Republicans taking advantage of that to try to propel themselves into power. Clinton's situation was quickly transformed from a debate over whether he was morally at significant fault into whether the Republican outrage was manufactured or genuine (in retrospect, surely some of both).
But Edwards? No party equity in him, really. He'll be jettisoned, and quickly. Expect the usual remarks, hoping he and Elizabeth can overcome this, at least he's confronting it now, what a shame, etc. But make no mistake, there's no need to help him out of this kind of scrape.
