Serious WR discussion

Anyone that thinks he is an average QB doesn't know much about football. He can't manage the game. He gave up first downs on two mistakes that a freshman would have known better. His best pass of the day was to their safety for an interception. Think the coaches don't see that, why do we now run on 3rd and 21 and 3rd and 9. Every game we have had to use timeouts because he is at the line with the clock funning down trying to figure out their defense. I agree there have been some dropped balls this year, but not nearly as many as the TERRIBLE throws he makes. If he is our best chance to win then I am behind him all the way, but I'm tired of hearing he is a top level QB, 6 years and still below average
Not once have I ever said he was ANY type of quarterback. Not great, average, or below average. Just was commenting on the fact that not EVERYTHING has to be his fault. We have less talent EVERYWHERE with the exception of running back and defensive line. If a ball hits the receiver in both hands it shouldn’t matter its velocity; more often than not it should be caught. We aren’t as good this year. We are still better than where we were 5 years ago by a LONG shot. And for that, I’m thankful and trust the coaches to make the best decisions.

Players gotta make plays, be it the receiver or quarterback. Quarterbacks have to hit open recievers and recievers have to catch balls that hit them in the hands. It’s just that simple. Heupel needs to let them know that missing the easy plays isn’t acceptable. That said I am not benching Keyton, he is in a slump but he has made big plays for us before and can again. I tell him I believe in him and know he is going to play great this coming Saturday! It’s time for everyone to play their best game. If we do we can beat Bama! GBO

no...rewatch his throws...recvrs breaking open hes holding the ball and throwing late.course it didnt help when the ball finally arrived the db's were pulling our guys arms down. whats up w/ keyton and the drops, hell give webb a shot.

Dude the replays showed plenty. OL wasn't giving him time and WRs are not getting separation. I'm not going to pretend like Milton is great or anything, but you are high if you think the only problem is Milton.

Thank you, this 100% the Wr are getting zero separation....OL is getting better but see still missing blocks, looking at you Lane!!!!! And the Wr have no 2nd gear and only 1 wr beside bru and squirrel actually adjusted to the ball..Nimrod...the Wr have no catch radius..keyton has had drop issues since he stepped on campus...Joe has to be better but it is not all on him..

My question is, does Dee Williams have an extra year of eligibility after this season? I think he’s obviously an outstanding kick returner, but if he has a full off-season to prepare to play wide receiver as well I think it would be huge for us next season. Potentially getting Bru back after he recovers, getting squirrel back, and moving Dee into the rotation would be a good move IMO. It’s always nice to have that kind of player on offense. I just was curious if maybe he had a Covid year or something.

Our WRs need some acting lessons so, when they are man-to-man they can draw a PI. A&M had no respect for our guys and was on them like white on rice. Once they start getting penalized, there might be some chance to get open. Otherwise, our guys will be draped in red next week.

We'll see what Heupel does this week. Keyton made some big catches for us last year. Hard to bench him over a couple of drops

It's not just drops. This year we are only completing 48% of the balls thrown to Keyton. Getting open has been a rare occasion and when he has been open he has dropped some easy ones.

Other receivers by comparison
White 69%
McCoy 65%
Nimrod 56%
Warren 88%
Castles 60%
even Thornton is at 50%

You’re trying too hard to find faults in Milton. There are enough faults already. You don’t have to reach like this to find them. It was a near perfect pass that hit Keyton in stride on a play that Milton got hit in the head as he released the ball. Keyton has to catch that ball no matter if it’s wobbly or not, which I’m not sure if it was.
Yeah, you're right, it was a good spiral. A bit short and off target but definitely a catchable ball. I'm not trying to find fault in anyone, there is plenty there with these two. I just remembered he had to slow down and adjust his route.

What I can’t understand is that Milton threw some good bombs last yr during mop up duty….several to Squirrel, wide open….but we’re not seeing much of that this yr. Is defenses taking it away?

Joe is blamed for our offensive woes but has not been alone. It has been discussed that receivers have not stepped up. A lack of separation, drops, and route running have all been brought up by analysts. Joe has not helped them, and they have not helped Joe, but what do you think is the path forward for them to regroup? Is it to bench some and play others? Do we stick with the current recipe and hope they break through? Is Joe stepping up or out the only solution? Who do we think can rise to the occasion?

I'd like to see us use the backs more in the passing game since they are our best playmakers right now. I'd love to see Williams get incorporated for ten or so plays since he is so dynamic. I'd also like to see more designed runs for Joe to help him contribute more positively.

There have been some bad drops. There is a lack of trust between them. I also think the receivers are psyched out a little because of how hard JM throws.

The lack of separation is two parts and we probably don't have the ability as fans to know which one plays in more. One, it could just be the receivers not running strong, precise routes or using their speed. Two, we pretty much know that Milton holds the ball too long. He has the arm to still get it there but in the mean time the secondary has made a read and closed on the receiver.

I would explain it like this. Hooker and other good QBs throw receivers open. They anticipate. They throw on time. They throw to the location where the receiver will be open.

Milton throws to open receivers. He doesn't anticipate well. He sees them open then drills it in. The receivers have the dual challenge of a ball thrown with extreme velocity and coverage that has already reacted.

Unfortunately, we watched JG struggle this through multiple coaches for 4 years. Milton isn't as bad and has more arm to make up the difference. But they seem to show symptoms of the same disease. I am not sure it can be fixed.

What they can do is focus the passing game on what Milton does well. He does deep posts better than deep sideline. He previously threw crossing routes well so that might be an option. The comeback to White last week seemed to be a play that uses his best talents.

PS- I wish Merrill had not transferred. He and Milton seemed to have a special connection that worked.

Agreed. I think the best bet is for them to get Milton more involved in the running game and then open up some downfield plays here and there. The TEs have done a nice job too lately so hopefully that continues.

All great questions. Joe is a millisecond late on a bunch of throws. The receiver position is just unpolished and undisciplined. They have talent but the mental part is not showing up. If their cuts aren't sharp and their routes are a yard off it makes Joe look worse. Also, you just can't have drops. Our line has looked average, especially left gaurd. Overall very Jekyll and Hyde. My 2 cents for what it's worth.

Go Vols!!!

I think Keyton should still be in the rotation, but he has lost the right to be a starter imo. Let's see what Webb and Nimrod can do. Even Thornton has flashed more than Keyton this year.

Really wish Walker hadn't transferred. He has better hands than any of our starters lol
