Shooter's parents charged in Oxford High School shooting

I thought the text she sent upon learning of the shooting begging Ethan to "Please don't do this" is pretty damning. It sets up that she had probable cause to believe her child was capable of such an act and still provided him with open access to the means of commission.
When I first heard that I assumed she was concerned he would harm himself, probably need to see the full text chain to know

So did the school
I'm curious to know what rights the school had to send the kid home at the point they saw an issue. From what I've read the parents would not consent to send him home. I'm not saying the school was right or wrong, I just don't know what options they had at that point.

They could send him home easily. And they should’ve had the SRO search him. There is no way Knox County would’ve allowed this

I actually had that exact scenario in a case some years ago. Teenagers doing minor car burglaries found a gun. One brought it to school and had it in his car. Another friend looking at it in back seat as they leave at end of day and it goes off and bullet goes through front seat and kills the kid that brought it to school. True story.

Did they charge the people they stole it from?

So the parents turned their cell phones off and withdrew 4k from ATMs.

I don't think they are coming back to turn themselves in.

4K is not going to get them very far. Being on the lam is expensive.

These parents are as deranged as their kid. Stack the charges long and deep against all of them.

The parents are culpable no doubt about it.
The thing that bothers me and I think could have avoided the situation.
In my opinion, anytime a kid is sent to the office they should be escorted by a SRO and their backpacks/belongings should be searched. If this had occurred the shooting would not have happened.

This is simple parenting 101. Keep your guns away from kids.

That being said, I think I'm going to buy a Chiappa Rhino today.

Allowed what?
If a kid writes what is perceived to be a threatening message, the school should search his things and then send him home?
For how long?

Those situations differ from this in that a handgun has very narrow purpose and this outcome was at least well within the reasonable consequences and perhaps even a highly predictable outcome.

The others are too distant in causation terms.
A handgun can have a wide range of purposes, but narrowminded people see only a few. That doesn't absolve the parents in this situation.

One thing that concerns me, assuming it’s true, is that the student drew a disturbing picture, they didn’t appear to be alarmed and refused to have him evaluated by a mental health professional. Had they seen the drawings before? We’re they in denial?

This is i said in a different thread I wasn't against a search of this kids belongings. There was a consistent pattern of behavior with this kid. It wasn't a one time thing.

They wouldn’t have had said meeting at school without SRO searching his belongings and would’ve never let him continue to class

Bought it for him?? H.F.S.

Lock em' up.
I was on the fence about it when I first understood the gun to be stolen. If they bought it for him though I hope they go away for life. I don’t know what Michigan law is as it relates to this though
