Should you only be a fan of one school?

I went to 2 schools, (my avatar shows them clearly) and my kid goes to a different school. So, I will leave it at those 3.

I was cheering for Vandy to beat UK but, while I like to see them win once in a while, Im not a FAN of their sports teams. (love the school for what they do as a school)

For me it will always be
MSU
UF
ut
Detroit Tigers
Detroit Lions
Detroit RedWings
Detroit Pistons (if I decide to watch NBA again)
Lansing Lugnuts (minor league baseball)

I only care about the Vols in any college sport...

I only have pro teams that I want to see lose.

My brother in law graduated from MSU and UF also. I have found that most Big 10 fans root for multiple teams in the same conference.

Yankees
Heat
Alabama football
Kentucky basketball
South Carolina baseball
New York Giants

I hate those kinds of people who only care about being associated with winners when most of the time it has the opposite effect.

EDIT: :good!::good!: to your brother-in-law.

I cannot root for any other BigTen team, and I find it especially hard to want anything good for um. My dad gets chemo at the um hospital, but that is about all that I tolerate out of that place.

I have always been the same way about the SEC also. I went to UF, Ive been a Gator since. . . about the age of 8. (considering I grew up in Michigan, that was not always easy to accomplish)

I was lucky most of the time because MSU and UF rarely ran into each other. And then the 2000 NCAA Basketball game, and then the 2001(?) Citrus Bowl, and a couple of run-ins at the NCAA Tourney, it got tough for a while. I was still pretty lucky because it almost always meant more for one school's PROGRAM, than it did for the others, so I could pick a side, and then just be miserable for the entire experience.

And then my daughter needed to pick a school. She applied to 3 (MSU UF UT) and was accepted to 3. She was offered a spot in the Honors college at all 3, and offered essentially a full academic scholly at all 3 (Hope Scholly+others at UT)

Her choice came down to
1) The school she has always loved, and dreamed of attending, which is now 8 hours from where her family lives

or

2) The school that was only an hour+ away from her family's new home. And still a very good academic choice in her major.

Im glad she took option 2. and Im enjoying it 100%. Was just in Knoxville over the weekend to see her Good times.

But if I didnt have a kid at UT, I would not be a fan. Nothing against any of you, or your school, that's just the way things work out. You have me for all but one weekend every fall, and 2 games+ in the winter.

I think there is a difference in pulling for a team and being a fan. I might pull for an SEC team to beat an out of conference team in a bowl game, but I'm not pulling a Mississippi State hat out of my closet.

I just don't get people who have one team in one sport and another team in another sport. I guess the only exception I would somewhat understand is if you attended or have connections with a school like Murray State or WKU. You might pull for them when they are good, but it would be easy to follow another team while waiting for their "once-in-a-lifetime" season.

I grew up in Lville so I pull for them too - not to the degree i pull for the Vols but they rarely ever cross paths so it really doesnt present a problem

I'm an Arizona alum, send my son and all my money to UT so yes you can root for more than one school and dislike Kentucky with equal fervor.

Grew up in Tennessee, UNC student. So I'm a Vol football fan, Vol basketball fan, and kinda cheer for UNC sometimes if they're playing Duke or if Tennessee is already eliminated.

I am a bit of sports polygamist with the NHL though. The Bolts are my team, and I'll cheer for them above everybody else. Been that way since before there were any other teams in the Southeast. But Nashville got a team, and I just moved to the Raleigh area, so. . . Southern hockey solidarity!

I think the only reason to cheer for multiple college teams is if you have a meaningful connection to both of them. For example, if I get into a doctorate program after I finish my master's, it will be somewhere else (possibly FSU). So if that happens, I will be a fan of UT and FSU (with UT being #1 obviously) because I have meaningful connections to both programs. Anything less than meaningful is a bandwagoner.

When it comes to sec,no matter what the sport,Im ALL VOL! When it comes to the pros I usually follow players instead of teams.

I pull for a lot of different teams, that I have ties to either through living there or association with my parents. Beyond that I actually actively root against all other SEX teams.
Nerd-Vol, huh? Hmm...

In most cases, yes it is lame.

I agree. If your a true, die hard fan there is truely just one team. I will say there are teams I enjoy watching and will watch their games when UT isn't on. Will watch most SEC games unless its like OleMiss VS Vandy. Thats just bad football. But I enjoy watching Oregon, USC, FSU and a few others.

I have been a die-hard Tennessee fan since birth, but will be attending the University of Georgia next fall (in-state tuition). Am I allowed to still cheer for the Vols, or does one have to root for the school they go to? I'm leaning towards sticking with the Vols

[LOL-ing Out Loud]

Cheer yer butt off for both schools. One week every fall you will be in misery, but no harm in keeping UT as "yer school". Just cheer quietly for that ONE week.

If you attend a school like UT or UGA, Mich State, any SEC/BigTen school and you dont fully immerse yourself into your schools athletic environment, then you are missing out on the full college experience.

My kid will always be a Michigan State Spartan, but is also fully immersed in, and enjoying being a uTennesee Vol.

Good luck at uga, I have a few friends that really enjoyed their time there.

Is it just me or have the number of Vanderbilt fans quadrupled since yesterday? I live in the Nashville area and it always ticks me off that there are all these "fans" of Vanderbilt that you never hear from unless VU wins big (i.e. SEC Tourney) or beats UT. As a matter of fact, a lot of them don't claim to be exclusively Vandy fans and pull for other teams as well. So my pet peeve got me to thinking.

Do you guys think it is lame for people to be "fans" of more than one university?

P.S. I actually know someone who claims to be a fan of Kentucky, Florida, and LSU.

For me, it is NOT okay to have multiple teams. Well, it is, but you have to CHOOSE one team that you like above the rest. You have to have one FAVORITE team.

One of my best friends claims fanhood of both Ohio State and Vanderbilt. I refuse to acknowledge him, and I refuse to discuss college sports with him. He hates it, but I keep telling him, "Pick one team, then I'll take you seriously as a fan."

He had been talking smack to me all week leading up to the Vandy game. Then we won, so I gave it back. Then he turned around the next day after Ohio State beat Michigan State and started bragging about a conference title. That was when I decided I wasn't going to humor him any longer.

Thank you for the response. I agree that cheering for your schools team results in a better college experience and I don't want to get on everyone's bad side right away. The only thing that will make it tough is the fact that UT and UGA are such big rivals. I will go to the games and possibly cheer for georgia, but I will always be a Vol at heart.

When we were setting up my kids dorm room back in the fall, one of the first things I did was head to the cork board thingy by her desk. I took all of the blue push pin thingys, and I spelled out GO GATORS with the pins. They remain untouched to this day.

But she also went to every home football and basketball game that didnt have a scheduling conflict, and went to numerous soccer, volleyball and now softball games as well. It took her a while to openly cheer for them, but on the inside, she was pulling for them. Just took a while to get used to. :clapping:

It will also help when you start to notice athletes in your classes. Some of them you will want to cheer for, some you wont. :peace2:

The only reason why I kind of like OSU is because I live near columbus and my family are huge buckeye fans. However, I LOVE the state of Tennessee, there is just something about the University of Tennessee that I really love, something I can't find at another school. I started following Tennessee in 2005 (I was 11 at that time and am now 18) but was a much bigger buckeye fan because of my family ties. But around 2007, I started becoming a very huge volunteer fan...bigger than OSU and now I'm hardly an OSU fan...I pay attention to them, but I mainly get into Tennessee now. So long story short, I have family ties to OSU, I love the state of Tennessee and the university and their my #1 favorite team. I like the reds...well...just because, I don't really know. I just like the city of cincinnati. 2nd favorite team after the vols.
