SI post-spring college football rankings

Obviously winning would be better than losing. All I'm saying is that I don't think a loss would be the cataclysmic event that some people are making it out to be. Face it, a lot of people are waiting to pounce regardless of when the first loss occurs.

thats true. i think a loss at home would be devastating. if we had to lose it would be better to do it at cal, where the players didn't have to hear the fans rumblings. i honestly believe where it is a home game, to help erase the thoughts of last year we must win.

Who's waiting to pounce?

i'm probably putting a lot on this game unjustly too....i don't think if we lose the game that we'll just come apart at the seams or anything, but i do think it will have an affect on the confidence and faith of the players in what the coaches are trying to do....

From that standpoint, if we come out and win with the so called "new" offense, i think it really gets the guys pumped up and believing again...

but from an overall picture, if we were to lose a game in the 1st half of the season, and i had a choice as to what it'd be...i'd choose the Cal game....it's early, non conference and we would still control our own destiny in the SEC E. From that stand point, the game doesn't matter.

But this year, for this staff and this team, they need to get a good win under their belt before the SEC schedule gets going....

Losing to Cal is survivable, still possible to win the SEC.

Losses to Florida and LSU probably means finishing 2nd or 3rd in the SEC, Fulmer still hasn't done enough to get a contract extension under those circumstances, but most likely he will campaign for one.

No one in particular, I'm just saying that if we lose any of the first 3 games people, the natives are going to get restless coming off the debacle last year.

yeah, well that's to be expected...though i don't know that it would be too bad if we are 4-1 heading in to the UGA game.......the UF game is going to be weird this year...there will be a lot of people that think we should win....i'm one that for now, thinks that UF should beat us...it's a loss i've already budgeted. Cal is the toss up game in my mind for the 1st 5 weeks.

If we head in to Athens at 4-1...i'd be feeling pretty good.

If we loose to Cal but Arkansas beats USC we will remain the laughingstock of CFB in general and the SEC in particular. It is a must win game for this program.

The fact is though, we could have a vastly improved team and still lose to Cal. That's why I'm not quite ready to go on a suicide watch if we lose the opener.

nah.....losign to Cal would suck...but laughing stock? i mean, we do have to play the rest of our schedule...including at Ark....so if all that happens and we go in to fayetnam and beat the piggies......what then?

we could have a very respectable season losing three games. two of which would probably be to UF and LSU...both of whom are supposed to be very good this coming season....the third could be from any of the following: Cal, Bama, UGA....

For me, i'd really like to beat both Bama and UGA....

Not true. Cal is an absolute fraud. A loss to them will prove no improvement has been made. Cal=The '06 version of Iowa and Michigan from '05.

i do agree with that....you can tell if a team is any good or not by watching them play...even in a loss...kind of like ND against USC last year or OSU against TX.....no body walked away from those games saying OSU or ND sucked.

that may very well be true, but right now, know one knows.....

but i'd sure hate to lose that game and then watch Cal self destruct in to a 6-6 or 7-5 season....

I've seen you post that several times, and I hope it's ture, but at this point we don't know if that's the case or not. They probably will prove to be soft on defense, but they also have some big play capability.

I'll say this though. . . I'd much rather play a finesse team like Cal in the opener than some others.

of course sometimes when two teams play a close one it's becasue they both suck
that is also true...kind of like the TN/USC game last year....or the TN/Mem game.....or the TN/Vandy game....

See '05 Tennessee/Vandy :shakehead:

I agree very well said.
