I'm not going to allow this to turn in to a "me defending aTm's move to the SEC West and the success of this season" thread. If you want that type of pissing contest, take it to the NCAA forum and I'll gladly supply you with all you want and more.

I'm a proponent for staying on topic.

i see, and that topic is an a&m fan suggesting UT be frugal in their hiring of a new coach? there should be a forum for that topic called "who gives a crap"

truth is, you and missouri will still be sitting at the kids table this thanksgiving, stay out of grown folk bidness

Loftin said at the time "The issue is looking at the long-term and any short-term costs must be weighed against long-term costs and benefits."

and aggie fans accepted it, but aggie fans cant accept the vols spending money to get the best?

Not what I said or implied. My point was that if you drop 10 mil for a demi-God, you'd better be prepared to weather the storm during and after the clouds form. I honestly question some in this fan base with the reasoning ability to do that.

because your hours of posting on a message board has convinced you that the average UT fan is represented by their bipolar avatar's on an anonymous message board?

no, its not even that..what if we pay Stoops 8mil , Patterson 6mil or Sumlin 4mil...wouldnt those scenarios seeem extravagant and setup unrealistic expectations? of course! any hire will.

hell, half the battle is giving your fanbase hope...thats the whole reason Fulmer is gone and now Dooley. apathy.

You do realize that TA&M is second in the west and it's just thier first year in the SEC right? On top of that they did beat Bama and should have beat FL. I think they have earned a spot at the big boys table. Plus they actually know how to hire a good coach.

I get what you're saying, but you are using inflammatory words ("demi-Gods and holding schools hostage") that cloud your point (& then you get mad when people flame you (smh). With all due respect, you don't (nor do I) know for sure about the $10 mil number or the amount of debt that would be associated with it (vs. donation). Had UT's previous hire worked out (via Dooley or a different hire), yes, UT would not be in a bit of tight place right now relative to needing the HR hire. But in terms of investment for the future of UT football, & with it the overall economic health of the university/community, I think people with deep pockets are faced with making a big investment now. As with any investment, there is risk - it is what it is. Not sure why you're so concerned about it unless you just don't want the college coaching landscape to change. However, as GAVol said that ship sailed a long time ago with pro athletes' salaries & the SEC television contract made sure that it will continue to sail. Finally, I think comparing Dooley's buyout with what the average joe will make in a lifetime is immaterial - since you brought up the apples & oranges!

this first year success has just set them up for disappointment using that guys logic.

Sumlin should have came in and lowered the bar, tried to not win too many games...because now they will expect this every year.

So your saying, any coach who comes into a program should chose how many games he should win the first few years, so not to set up the fan base and school for disappointment down the road if he cant keep winning. Do you hear yourself? Would you have our new head coach go 5-7 or 6-6 just so he doesn't set the bar to high. That is the most ridiculous thing i have heard in a while. Secondly, TA&M got a huge recruiting jump by moving to the SEC and it's that first year success that will probably keep them winning in this league.
I think all he was trying to say was that we need to be careful in how much we invest and who we get to lead our program for the future. I dont think it was a knock on our program. Because if we screw this up, we'll be recovering for quite some time.

i dont think you read the first post in his thread.

im using his logic to show the absurdity.

he says UT should not spend too much on a coach else they get set up for disappointment.

Even with Gruden on the sidelines next year, we'd be lucky to win 7 games. It'll be interesting to see this board have a meltdown after the savior comes and this is what happens. It'll take years for major success to occur.
