Even with Gruden on the sidelines next year, we'd be lucky to win 7 games. It'll be interesting to see this board have a meltdown after the savior comes and this is what happens. It'll take years for major success to occur.

As long as we win over Vandy and Kentucky it is a step up. With Gruden are chances are better then they have been the last few years.

I'll go ahead and create my first thread in this sadly necessary sub-forum.

I'm all for the impending rise of Tennessee Football and can certainly agree that the NCAA is better when Tennessee is relevant. Your passionate fan base, along with your storied program is a huge asset to all of College Football.

Money and coaches has evolved in to an indestructible monster that cannot be controlled, and sparsely contained. You will have your "big names" calling their shots, making demands that are seemingly impossible to be justified. The end result? You want a National Championship.

So you're left with the same dismal predicament that any high stakes poker player faces while at the Hold em table. "All in"? Just wait for the flop? The river? When do you push the chips forward and say, this is it? 10 mil has been a figure thrown around for Gruden. I dont know the validity of that and dont care to know honestly. At this point, I'd be willing to bet a ton of this is speculation, thus the creation of the sub forum.

What I do know is this. Passion aside, gambling 10 mil is a giant task to ask any AD at any school. And lets not be mistaken, that's what this is. Its gambling.

I watched this fan base turn on Fulmer, burn furniture for Kiffin, and wear bags for Dooley, and I'm left with the notion that if you get what you're hoping for, eventually, you'll have a similar reaction to "whoever takes it". That being said, can you live with the 10 mil debt on top of a few above .500 seasons until the ship gets turned around? Or will you remind everyone after every loss, because there will be losses, that "we are paying wayyyyy too much for these results" ?

A tracking device for those who claim $ is no object to them would be pretty interesting to see after the cards are finally laid on the table.

I wish you luck. I hope they get the right guy. The stage is set for the next act in this play, but that script is going to be tough to work through.

As for my suggestions, well, they were not well recieved around here so I'll just leave it at that. If Gruden is your guy, I hope you get your wish. I'm not against it, but I am against these candidates becoming demi-Gods and holding schools hostage.

If you look at the first statement out of his mouth it is for the rise of UT football. Not against us.
Second. He states that the hiring of college coaches has turned into a monster of its own and that we want to win a National Championship. Both correct statements.
Third, he saying its a big gamble spending that kinda money on any coach, results or not. He's also right in the fact that the fan base will be upset if we dont start winnning after a couple of years and are we willing to wait for success. Both of these statements are also true.

SO.....after i broke it down for you do understand now?
Oh, by the way, he wishes us luck at the end of the post, just in case you didn't read all of it.

this first year success has just set them up for disappointment using that guys logic.

Sumlin should have came in and lowered the bar, tried to not win too many games...because now they will expect this every year.[/QUOTE]

I'm posting this again, just in case you forgot what you said.

Capt. Agg. We appreciate your concern and beating Bama. Now,get ready to look waaaay up at Papa Jon Gruden. Get ready to play UT in ATL,if yall ever make it. You are right about one thing:UT IS one of the most storied programs in history, and we are gambling. You don`t realize we have a royal flush. King Jon is going to be equivalent 2 hiring Madden, bro. Yall have NO CLUE how great UT wll be. Coaching and recruiting can turn us around immediately. I WILL be shocked if we dont win 10 in 13 minimum. I will support UT till I die. Every HS kid in the US will be beating down UT`s door. My source says J Football has decided to transfer to the Vols, pending Grude`s announcement. Go Vols! We are back and noone is going to dampen my spirits. I see why they call you CO now. It`s obvious you have no CLUE.

you bolded the wrong part.

of course thats insane! using his logic thats exactly what Sumlin should have done

he suggests UT should temper expectations rather than do all they can to start winning again as soon as possible.

i dont understand why this confuses you so much

Why is everyone being an @ss? Very well written and thoughtful points. I think Gruden is unproven at the college level and what you describe is absolutely plausible. BUT Gruden will absolutely electrify the fan base and players. He's not the BEST coach but in this instance he's the RIGHT coach, IMHO.

Apparently, we will have to agree to disagree. I dont take his comments in the direction you trying to push them. Read the first of the statement. It clearly says he supports us to rise!!!! You obviuosly dont understand the reference to the poker player in the post. So naturally you take it wrong. HE's talking about it being a gamble for God sake. Secondly, I'm confused by nothing but women and thier logic, not TXAM07 's comments on our situation........or your attempt to alter the context of which the post was meant in the first place

i guarantee i understand poker much better than both of you, so ill give you my poker analogy:

Tennessee is short stacked , while the rest of the table is collecting chips. you two expect us to wait on pocket aces and let the blinds eat us up. at some point you have to shove with a 9/10 off preflop and hope for the best. at some point you must gamble to stay alive and hope to cash. its called "m theory", look it up.

So you're saying go after the lower fruit and just see where that takes you? Don't do what Bamma finally did with the little man?

OP, it's a nice thought, but I don't know that we really needed to be reminded that results are never guaranteed. Anyone who's been a fan of this team through its recent struggles knows this very well.

It's a risk spending big money on a coach, but the parties involved understand and accept the risk and are capable of pooling the necessary funds. We've been trying for singles and doubles as of late, and we see where it's taken our program.

We need something bigger right now.

Captian Oblivious, you type much but say nothing. Good day.

TXA has a point, a good one..

Me personlly, I like Gruden and think he will do well at this level...

That being said, some of you need to realize that things like READING and THINKING are your friends.. Embrace them so you don't so often look like an idiot..

thats me using his scenario , answering how it should be played. you have to shove...after 3 straight losing seasons for the 1st time in 100 years id equate our situation as only having 5 big blinds left.

Saban is sittin on the big stack just buying blinds at this point all because Alabama gambled when they were short stacked.

Well.... I guess all those hours spent on-line either wasting your money or playing imaginary poker finally paid off :)and while it appears you know something about poker, I wont pretend to know more than i do about poker though I have played enough in my life, to understand what you mean. Correct me if I'm wrong but i guess your saying that it's time for Ut to go all in or get left behind. We dont have enough talent(coaching or otherwise) to keep up and are slowly being pushed out so to speak by the other schools. :hi:
