Sitting here watching this presser....

Addressing some of your points, the "drama" might play a part. But I think that the difference is that Coach Dooley was 'one of us'. He knew the SEC. His (Dooley's) dry wit is apparent. Coach Pearl made up for his lack of knowledge of the SEC with his enthusiasm. He just got the best the job that he ever had and he knew it.

Don't get that vibe from Martin. I don't think that he yet appreciates what UT BB means to a ton of folks going all the way back to Coach Mears and through the dry times.
We do not wish to return to the Houston/Peterson periods and he needs to understand this.

I wish him luck but he did nothing to instill much hope that he is the answer.

Coach Dooley is anything but 'one of us' unless everyone on this board grew up with a dad as a HC at an SEC school.

Did you not hear Martin talking about Mears, Ellis and Lofton in the press conference?

Come on JZ, we all know what he really meant.

I think he meant, white, and southern... :hi:

Many coaches are not. It's easier to look somebody straight in the eye as you give direction vs looking up at them. Especially if you are calling out a kid like Hopson, which will happen quickly if he stays.
Are you saying that Scotty is defensively lacking?:)

Dooley knew who General Neyland was and what he was about. I doubt that Martin knew who Mears was until someone briefed him on some talking points.

I just hope, again, that Coach Martin understands what UT basketball means to the fans who grew up watching games in Stokely or earlier and had been in the desert pretty much since Devoe and Ellis left. We used to be the only team that could even compete with UK. It means something and I hope that he is able to overcome the sanctions and get UT back on the national stage for the right reasons.

You are, of course, joking. I never started on a basketball team from seventh grade to college with a another white ballplayer. People are people.

But where you come from means something, too. I hope this coach understands what it means @ UT to beat UK and Florida in basketball. The same way that Coach Dooley understands what it is like for UT to beat bammer and the swamp folks in football. The way Bobby Dodd knew that it meant something for Ga Tech to beat UT in football, history runs deep.

Of course :D I just thought the fact someone would question the original nature of the comment, was a tad ridiculous. It was obvious where the comment came from. That Dooley grew up aware of the individual traditions that came with the university. He didn't need a book or class on UT traditions.

So you honestly think that coach Zo does not realize he has to win? LOL

What?? Dooley did 1,000 times better in his initial presser, than Martin did just then. It almost seemed uncomfortable.

I thought we lost the press conference although my mom liked him. Perhaps after a few wins he will be able to smile and develop a personality.

Perhaps off camera he is a different person but part of the job should be promoting UT and the brand and it concerns me that he is very weak on this front. Don't think for a minute that the reason we were constantly on TV wasn't partially because of Bruce's personality and the excitement in the arena.

And the presence of a multi-billion dollar ESPN contract with the SEC.

Six years ago, I would agree. Right now, we just need a winner.

I'm gonna say that if I'm in charge of a fundraiser or a charitable organization -- I just lowered my forcast of donations by 75% if UT's basketball coach is my guest speaker. I am going to give him a chance but when Mike Hamilton is more dynamic than this guy --- we have a problem IMO.

I know you guys didn't like Pearl, but he did bring the total package which included buying Pizzas for the students, standing on tables, and screaming "were're gonna beat the F out of Kentucky." He made it an event and made it fun.

I don't think Martin is going to be able to promote -- and I have only seen it truely exciting and alive ---with Mears and with Pearl -- both high energy promoters.

pizza for students? Manning did that in 96 for UT students in line

and if this guy tells his story and people aren't listening then that's their problem

Boring vs Exciting. I don't dislike him and I wish him great success- just glad I won't be listening to many more of his stories or press conferences.

If I was in development at UT or a local sports writer I would be pissed.

If I was making a hire for business development for my company -- he would not be a finalist. If I needed someone in operations -- he would likely be at the top of my list. There's the distinction.

So you prefer a guy who comes in and says he looks forward to singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat UK at Rupp.

It sure would get him all sorts of play in the national media.

as much as ppl say it, I still doubt the administration/AD realizes how important what you're saying is to attendance ..

if you have to hire men on unicycle's and dancing bears, then do it .. if you have to copy every 'gimmick' that pearl used, then do it .. sadly they probably won't ..

I think you're wrong. He mentioned these things specifically in his presser. Mentioned Mears, King, Grunfeld, Houston, Ellis and Lofton. I would say he has a great handle on the tradition. Probably moreso than most of our posters

I get what you continue to say, but I believe he understands what this job means and what UT basketball means just as well as you, with all due respect

The promoting side of it was only needed because our program was down and out at the time. Pearl reinvigorated it and we're back on the map. The promotion side isn't as important now as it was a few years ago. Martin can promote the program by winning a lot of games and advancing in the tournament. If we continue to play at a high level comparatively speaking, then the PR isn't as necessary.
