Situation in Venezuela

interesting bit of history.

long story short. 3 important rivers in the area, starting in the West is Orinoco in current Venezuela, then the Barisma more or less current border, then the Essequibo which is the eastern edge of the disputed area. the Spanish only claimed the far western river, and the Dutch only claimed east of the far eastern river originally. However, when the British took the land from the Dutch their treaty claimed land west of the middle river. The Spanish came back and disputed that, and the land west of the middle river was turned over to the Spanish. when both colonies gained freedom the current border was reaffirmed a little west of the middle river along some other waterways.

as far as I can tell neither the Spanish nor the Venezuelans actually formally controlled the majority of the disputed territory, maybe 1/3rd but looks more like 1/4. Venezuela didn't claim the land until 1844, more than 30 years after they gained independence. and there were multiple treaties establishing the current borders. 1850 and 1966 being the biggest.

imo this is just as much a colonization issue by Venezuela as by the Europeans.

I think we can call this the "Russian Referendum" method of illegal annexation; since Putin pioneered it in 2014.
Russia originally helped establish the current borders taking the British side. America actually pushed the Venezuelan claims originally. but as I noted previously the Venezuelan claims never went as far as they are currently making.

Probably another country given the go ahead by China. We have our hands full.
No, "we" do not. These are self-imposed actions by our brilliant geo-strategists. Instead of sending military assets to the region, they should be sending diplomats to try to resolve this issue.

"Venezuela is backing up its threats to annex part of Guyana and secure access to some of the world’s largest oil finds in more than a decade by moving light tanks, missile-equipped patrol boats and armored carriers to the two countries’ border in what is quickly turning into a new security challenge for the Biden administration.

The deployment, visible in satellite images made public Friday and in videos recently posted by Venezuela’s military on social media, is a significant escalation in Caracas’s attempts to obtain some leverage over its neighbor’s newfound energy reserves. It comes despite a written agreement reached in December between Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Guyanese President Irfaan Ali that denounced the use of force and called for a commission to address territorial disputes."

They're probably thinking now is the time to make their move while we have a mentally challenged president in office.

It's a good time for any belligerent to make a move.
