Skylar McBee

Skylar McBee isn't just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill walk-on. He is a preferred walk-on. I'm sure most of you know what the difference is, but for those of you who don't (which seems to be quite a few of the people posting on this subject), a preferred walk-on is someone who is specifically asked by the coaches to come play for them without being given a scholarship. The fact that this kid passed up full-rides at other schools, albeit smaller schools, to come play for UT without receiving any type of financial aid tells me that he genuinely wants to be/play at UT, and that's the type of kids we should all want to see wearing Orange and White.

As for whether or not he can keep up--he was the 3rd highest scorer tonight against Depaul with 9 points, including 2 of 3 from 3-point land. I know 9 points isn't a lot, but it's more than Hopson, Tatum, Woolridge, Maze, Prince, etc. scored, and he did so while only getting 15 minutes of playing time. T-Smith and Wayne "Jizm" Chism (my new nickname for him after he hit that crucial 3 late against Depaul to put the Vols up 4) scored 14 points on 23 minutes, and 13 points on 28 minutes, respectively. McBee also grabbed a couple of boards and an assist as well (his assist-to-turnover ratio on the season is 7-2, only T-Smith, Prince, and Goins have better ratios). I'll take that output in that limited amount of PT from a true-freshman preferred walk-on every single time.

If I'm not mistaken, this is a website for TENNESSEE VOLS fans, so how about we just support him to the fullest until he gives us a reason not to. Keep in mind, he's just a true freshman-he could very well develop into the long-range sniper this offense so badly needs.

He does have D1 talent, which isn't hard considering there's 330 D1 basketball schools, he just doesn't have SEC D1 talent. You saw him run circles around kids because the lack of basketball talent in East TN is comical. The lack of talent is evident by the number of kids we bring in from the area to play basketball (so few).
Haha really? The highschool basketball in east Tennessee is untalented cause we had about 12 kids go D1 last year and this year were gonna double that so were definantly not untalented or comical here.

This is a great post. I love the wannabe coaches on here.

Skylar McBee I think will end up being what Jordan Howell was supposed to be.

Skylar could do even better than that. He is a hard worker and Bruce Pearl did pretty well in player development with his last preferred walk on guard, a guy named JaJuan Smith. J Smith also was an East TN basketball product.

Skylar can shoot. Don't underestimate that. We would have killed for a good 3 point shooter in certain games last year. He's also athletic enough and smart enough not to get killed on defense or in ball handling. I would not be surprised if he earns a scholarship before his time is over at UT.

Being in the rotation vs UNCA and Austin Peay means very little. We'll see where this kid stands when it comes to Memphis, KU, SEC games. For someone who said McBee's the 6th man off the bench, you're exactly right, the 6th man OFF the bench, not the 6th man. Pearl's evaluation of talent has nothing to do with this kid, he gave him the opportunity to walk on which he could grant to anyone, making the team is a different scenario. He believes he's good enough to be a member of the team doesn't mean he's good enough to see consistent minutes once the competition heats up. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see him do well and help our team, it's just comical that people believe he's a great player based on HS, where he competed in one of the worst areas for HS basketball in the entire country. The talent in the state, outside of Memphis, is a joke.
Well we just played the #6 team in the country and Mcbee was in the rotation does that mean absolutely nothing still?
