I'm far from an expert on the subject... just enjoy reading when I have the time. Most were former slaves who either bought or earned their freedom. The vast majority of slave owners (black or white) typically "owned" only a few slaves, and this was usually the case for the freed slaves. And as IP mentioned, some of these could have been benevolent slave owners.
Most people couldn't afford to buy a slave, they were really expensive.
One method many used if they could afford one or two was that they gave them the same deal as an indentured servant.
People payed the fare for some poor Eurpoean immigrants to America and in return the indentured had to serve seven years with little or no pay before becoming free.
In many cases tradesmen such as cobblers, tailors or black smiths for instance, bought a black slave who worked for seven years and learned the trade and then gained his freedom, hired on with that man or another at an agreed wage and perhaps saved his money and started his own business.
That was a lot better deal than many of the 'emancipated' got when they were granted freedom but had no marketable skills except farming and they had no land or tools to farm with.
Thanks for the post gsvol & TMwork, very very enlightening.

I went to elementary school at Joelton.
I-24 crosses two of my families farms between Joelton and Nashville and passes right by a third.
I think it's very fair to teach young children all the good the founders did before pointing out their faults.
I guess only the right wing is proud of what the founders accomplished.
Looks like you've been sucking on a little too much Che bro.:dance2:
Maybe Malcolm X was enslaved by and shot himself. Makes sense to me.
Definately the reason Ayers and Dohrn named their son after Malcom, it's all coming together.
