Slow playing recruits

I didn't say we should declare him a great football coach right now, just that we should give him the benefit of the doubt and at least start with the assumption that he's competent in the basic functions of his job (e.g. knowing the ins and outs of recruiting). If he's that incompetent, it will show itself soon, but as of now, we have no evidence of incompetence.

I do agree that there is no evidence of incompetence .... there are many coaches that have gotten to the SEC level who you could say that about.... yet they failed. All I am saying is there is no evidence of comptence either. I am just moving a little slower than you before I completely get on board, I am riding the running board tho....

I think MH made a gutsy call. He could have bunted and played it safe but instead he swung for the fence. Kippy or Cut would have been relatively safe choices. He obviously thought he was catching Dooley before his stock exploded. Multiple folks from LA have said that LSU fans liked him as Miles' eventual replacement. I am sure many opinions were taken from many different folks.

That said, there's no question he's a high risk hire. If he can convince recruits to come to UT for immediate PT then he'll get some good ones and have a chance. If not then he'll still leave the team better than it was if he can just leave behind a full roster of scholarship players.

I will be on board when he wins the SEC or at least beats UF and Bama. Until then he (or any other coach) has something to prove. The standard should be the same whether the HC's name is Fulmer, Kiffin, or Dooley. They aren't successful until they win something of importance.

I think some of you still don't get it.

MH tried, and failed, to hire several guys before Dooley. The guys that most of us would have LOVED to have seen hire to "lift UT out of the cess pool"... said "No thanks. Too much career risk involved."

MH missed it completly... Jon Grueden... said publicly on Mike and Mike in the morning that he has a deep love for UT and would definitly consider coaching here, but was not contacted????? why is that?

Can't answer that about Gruden except that I'm pretty sure he was approached before Kiffin got the job.

I find it funny how people throw out his 17-29 at LATech record as if the numbers alone mean something. To put it into perspective If say a coach came in and took over a program like Ga Southern and went 17-20 He probably did a bad job and that is a bad reflection on his coaching abilities. If he however came and took over another school in the same conference sat UTC and had they same record we would put him in the hall of fame.

So here is a test for all you people throwing out random numbers you don't understand. Is 17-20 an impressive record for a LATech coach? Given the fact the internet is out there these days and it only took me 5 minutes to look up the records of the previous coaches at that school over the same period as well as their record over the previous 37 the answer is easy. He did a hell of a job there. Spend a couple minutes on espn and you can even look up the recruiting classes he brought in compared to the ones before him.

Lets be real people not being that smart is excusable as most people are not that smart. Being a moron and lazy is however pretty bad. It takes 5 minutes tops to fact check most posts. Being a lazy moron who posts as though one is "in the know" in inexcusable. Realize a lot of people that read these forums(as well as 90% of forums period) can barely read as it is.

I believe the world should be a place of balance so I will give something positive to negate the negativity I may have conveyed near the end there. 90% of you have to be using either I.E. or Firefox (the last 10% are the unsalvageable that use safari or text in posts). Both of them have BUILT IN SPELL CHECKERS. When you type a word and there's a red line under it IT'S WRONG. IF your firefox or i.e. lacks this function you need to either a. update to a version made in the last 10 years or b. turn on the feature which is on by default.

No love for Chrome?

I want to be a Vol...I'm 6'0 170 and probably run a 5 flat 40. Think I'll get any attention from Dooley and Co.?

I wanted to be a Vol too. Coming out of high school, I was 5'10, 155lbs and was inaccurately timed around 4.5 in the 40. Also, I'd never played football. Fulmer didn't give me a look.

Both coaches and schools now play a "plausible deniability" game. Coaches don't want the impression that they are leaving a team if it doesn't work out or else that they have been passed over if they're out of work. Schools don't want the image of having been rejected by a coach.

It is likely IMO that Gruden did not have direct contact with MH... and just as likely that communications via the agent or that coach search firm fell through. As strange as it may sound, Gruden could turn the job down and still honestly say that "he" hadn't been contacted.
