Snowboarding/Skiing/Trips/and all things snowsports thread

We went to Wolf Ridge Run. It was fun, mainly because NO snow blowers going. Only 1 lift was open but it wasn't too crowded. Lots of ice on certain trails. I liked the crossover trail that went thru the woods.

that sounds like a blast!! how much did it cost to rent the snowmobiles??

It was a guided tour. I'd rather not think about it again until it hits my Visa. :)

But man it was a good time. If you're from the south, you truly haven't lived until you've buried a snowmobile and stepped off into waist high snow.

Our group went up on Wednesday I skipped and took a day off from skiing

I spent Wedneaday night with my 6 year old at the ER with a suspected ruptured ear drum ....which is not good when you have a flight scheduled Thursday morning. Spent an extra unplanned day out there.

Going to Sugar on Tue!!! Looks like they are gonna have some fresh snow. Front coming thru!!!

Also Just got a new pair of ski boots, Solomon's. They are normally $425 but I got them for $175 because they were 4 years old. (Size 16 US) that's why they were so old, limited customer base. It worked out great for me!! Cant wait to try them out!!

Just got back from Sugar tonight. It was great. Long Runs & NO SNOWBLOWERS!!! My boots need to be modified some. I have funky feet, Flat & boney.

Sugar getting pounded now and Thursday. Wonder if the area will be cleared enough for travel to the slopes.

About 20 years ago me and a buddy took my grandmother's grand national and it was the worst driving conditions I have ever had, barely made it. Now days they keep the road plowed pretty good they want you there. It should be ok.

Just do it, you may end up a little bruised, but you will have a great time.

I definitely plan to sometime. Money isn't right to go out west to the good stuff yet so I'm not sure on places that are closer. Like within a few states. Any suggestions? I'll browse this thread some.

Snowshoe, WV is pretty good for the SE.

If you have to stick to the NC area, I have had decent experiences at Cataloochee and Beech. Wolf Ridge was my favorite resort for NC. Haven't been to Sugar though.

There is an app called "ski report" that is very help when trying to figure out where you want to go.

Just to learn I wouldn't suggest anything to extravagant, there's a chance you may not like it. I'm at about 50% on people liking it when i take them for the first time. I don't know where you live, but the best time to go is right after a big snow dump. Also try to go with people who know what they are doing and willing to spend the time to teach.

Any experience with Ober Gatlinburg? It's so close I was just wondering.

I started skiing there in the early 80's, if you went in the next few days would probably wouldn't be bad. I have only been maybe twice since then. Catalooche (sp) in Maggie valley I have heard from my snowboarder buddies isn't bad. As a poster above pointed out the best in the SE is Snowshoe, WV.

First place I ever went, learned how to ski there. It is way overpriced now from what I gather because it is pretty much the only game in town for Knoxville.

If you are just learning, don't worry about conditions or number/type of runs as they won't make a bit of difference to a beginner. I would just concentrate on price of ski lift, price of rentals, and the amout of money in gas to the resort.

Sugar seems to do a pretty good job keeping roads cleared & roads leading up to resort.

Beech is a little tougher as you have to go OVER the mountain & then descend down. We got stuck earlier this year when a snow storm hit & we were in my wife's 2 wheel drive vechicle. Now every trip we take my 4wheel drive truck. (Not sure why we didn't take it to begin with)The roads were not maintained as well. Many hairpin turns & uphill climb.

Wolf Ridge is not bad because it is so close to the interstate. Less than 10 miles.

Yeah, the trip to Beech was definitely fun although I wonder if it's passable on a day like today.
