Snowboarding/Skiing/Trips/and all things snowsports thread

I watched the super combined tonight. It looked & sounded very slushy. It does make you appreciate how fast they go. I carry a hand held GPS & load info onto cpu when I get home. At Sugar my speed range was between 20-40 mph. While at Beech I reached 53mph & that was crazy fast. These people in the Olympics going 80 mph down Double Black Diamond runs. INSANE

Snowshoe is gonna have their "ridiculous Pass" again. It is a season pass for the rest of this season & all Next season too!!! It goes on sale the 19th for 10 days. it starts at $199 then increases $5 every day for 10 days. Cant wait to get ours. Havent been up there in years. Gotta go soon!! Im ready to ski Cupp Run!!

The biggest problem I have is it takes me the same amount of time to get there as it does to ski the Rockies. And the lift costs are close. That's a great deal though since they have snow.

Went to sugar and Appalachian last weekend. Saturday at sugar, the lines were unbearably long with frigid temps. Only got in about 7 total runs. Got in about 50 at App but that's because it has super short runs. I was kind of bored, but the lines were short and the weather was good.

Little help here... I am a begginer to intermediate skier. I ski 1-2 times a year mostly at Ober Gatlinburg. I don't own my skis and the most miserable part of sking is renting. I'm thinking about purchasing some used skis via Craigslist or something. I usually use 170cm skis. Any advice on what to look for or where to go find some reasonably priced skis other than Craigslist? TIA

If you plan to continue to ski, I would go ahead and get new skis and boots. I would check online and in stores (Sun and Ski here) for last year's models; you will get a big break in the prices for the previous year's equipment. It is most important that you buy your boots new (compared to your skis) because you want the right flex and for the boot to form to your foot.

As for buying skis online, be alert to the condition and age of your bindings. A lot of shops won't work on skis (bindings) that are over 8-10 years.

Good luck!

I would also check Ebay. especially if you know what length skis you need. If you do buy equipment, try to buy your boots locally. You need to mold boots to fit feet, for better fit/comfort. You can find deals on closeout equipment. I'm battling this issue now, having bought boots earlier this year. I need to get them adjusted again before my trip to Snowshoe on the 3rd. Gonna give them a trial run on Wen.

Thanks to all but curious about the boots thing. I've alway rented and never had an issue with fit. Why is it important to buy new boots?

yes, add wedges. that's what they are doing for my flat feet. they can even heat the shell & blow out the shape. ie make it wider.

Not sure. you might be able to buy their used rental equipment. it never hurts to ask if they have any deals.

Thanks for your help. There is Alpine Ski center in Knoxville. I have a friend whose daughter works there so I check with him. I've also seen some on Craigslist that I'll check out.
