So which team/teams get left out of the playoffs?

Well Alabama just lucked in to a win vs a 6 win Auburn team, so Heather Dinnich a committee person who knows her football better than anyone, says but they did win that's all that matters. Then later she says well the close win 16 to 6 for FSU over Top 15 Louisville may play a part and their missing their QB, I know their 13 & 0 but they may be left out.
I love it when the ones choosing the Final 4 haven't got a clue. Chaos the definition of the clueless selection committee.

I see the seeding going like this,
1. Michigan
2. Washington
3. Texas/Georgia/Alabama
4. Florida State

I’m aware I may catch grief over Fla St due to QB injuries, but how do you leave an undefeated P5 out over 1 loss P5? The arguments can be made in all directions. Glad it’s not up to me to decide. This scenario further proves the need for the expanded playoff.
You leave an undefeated P5 champ out of the playoff because they aren’t a top 4 team without their starting QB.

Let’s pretend that Tennessee beat Gamecocks in 2022 on that garbage field. Then, Hooker got hurt against Vanderbilt and Milton stepped in and eeked us out a W in the game. Would we be ok with being left out of the CFP because of an injury to our QB? The whole team won every game except UGA , but we lost HH5. Is it ok to be left out of the picture because our QB is hurt? FSU should be in.
It would have sucked, but we would have been left out.

FSU looks horrible. Letting them into the playoff with that garbage QB would be a travesty
That defense though. I would put FSU against anyone. Washington is not in the same league as FSU or Texas. Still not sold on Michigan, because even with their starting QB they look awful. AND they get rolled in the playoffs every year.

The "no, honestly, who are the best 4 teams" slate (in no particular order):
* UGa
* Texas
* Bama
* Michigan

The "-0 is key" slate:
* Michigan
* Washington
* FSU
* flip coins to choose between 1-loss options: Texas, Bama, UGa, and Ohio State

The "conference championship is key" slate:
* Bama
* Texas
* FSU
* Washington
* Michigan
[who you gonna leave out? Only Michigan is guaranteed to get in, the others can all be argued]

So your answer probably reflects your perspective on these three angles, nuanced by a bit of love or hate for one or more of these teams.

Bottom line is, there are 7 teams who could argue for a spot, but only 4 spots. The strongest argument belongs to Michigan. Weakest is Ohio State. Everyone else in between. Three fan bases are gonna be pissed off later today.

Heh heh heh

There really should be no debate. IMO, this is easy.

The three undefeated conference champs have to be in…period.

And Texas beat Alabama head-to-head, convincingly, in Tuscaloosa. Texas has to be the fourth.

If Alabama gets in over any of those teams, it will further confirm what we all know…Alabama has an unfair standing in the game. We know it’s true in the conference. This would just confirm it nationally.
While I totally agree, the issue is, whoever gets FSU in the semis is almost like getting a bye. I don't see anyway around it though. We've had terrible semi matchups almost every year of these 4 team playoffs.

Michigan
Washington
Texas
Florida State

Texas deserves to be in over Bama due to same record and beating Bama at home.

Florida State went undefeated and won their conference. You don't punish them because they lost their QB.

If Tennessee was undefeated last year and lost Hooker, we'd all be making the argument that they should be in.

Yeah and they won it. You can do a schedule like that, you just can't falter one bit.

I'll be very interested to see what happens.
I think being in the playoffs should not solely be determined by wins and losses but strength of schedule should play an equal role in making determinations. Next years' 12 team playoff will alleviate some of the problems of a 4 team playoff.

Last year TCU lost the Big 12 title game and was in. 1 loss OSU didn’t even play in their conference championship game and got in. So I don’t really care about undefeated FSU and their conference championship. They’re on their second string QB and are no longer a top 4 team. It’s too bad, because they had a great season—the best in a long time—but without the full starting lineup they’re out of the top 4.

Your first four is exactly what I told a friend this morning. If the playoff slate was expanded to eight to accommodate all the "who deserves it" candidates the national champion comes out of the group of Texas, Alabama or Georgia. These three would most likely be favored over any of the others on a neutral field.

And with Georgia having just lost, they would be my favorite. Last time they lost, they went on a 29-game win streak.

If I were picking, I'd pick Michigan vs Alabama and Washington vs Texas for my semi-finals. FSU's schedule was nowhere near the others teams at the top, and they're short their bigtime QB. Bammer had a close rivalry game, yes, but then they went and beat the 2 time champs for an SEC Title, so I'm not concerned about the Auburn thing.

Actually, no, strike that - if I were really picking, I'd pick Michigan vs Alabama and Georgia vs Texas. I'm pretty sure Georgia is a better team than Washington or FSU, and their only loss was to another top 5-ish team. FSU, again, no QB and softer schedule. But I'm not, so I can't put UGA back in.

Here are the numbers: FSU's 63 SOS was the weakest of the teams under consideration. However, Michigan comes in only ten places higher at 53.

Those suggesting that Texas was the champion of a weaker conference may be right. However, the Longhorns had the #1 SOS in college football.

SOS is only one measure used by the committee, but the results may give some perspective.

Strength of Schedule

Should history play in this?

Remember when LSU beat Bama in the regular season but the BCS made them rematch in the NC game and Bama won? Was that the year everyone outside of the SEC was crying saying Ohio State should be in it?

The worst thing that could happen is the committee placing another TCU type team in there-Bama or Florida St-and they get hammered. I’m not convinced that Bama would beat Georgia again, similar to the playoffs a few years ago.
That was Ok St and there are no TCU type teams involved this season.

1) Michigan
2) Washington
3) FSU
4) Texas
—————
5) Alabama
6) Georgia

Texas beat Alabama in their own backyard and has the best quality win of the year. While I understand FSU lost their star QB, they are still undefeated conference champs and they will have a month to figure things out. They should not be penalized for an injury.

Bama and uga get rightfully left out. However I would bet one of those 2 wins a NC in a 12 team playoff

I don’t understand how the SEC champ game results drop Georgia 5 spots but only bumps up Bama 3?

Some of y’all act like the regular season is a single elimination tournament…it is not. Some of y’all forget the committee is charged with selecting the best four teams AT THIS MOMENT to compete in the playoffs. All metrics have merit in the discussion, but in the end it’s supposed to be about which four teams are the best today.

No one I’ve heard advocating for FSU says they believe they are one of the best four. Undefeated is a significant data point, but so is schedule and team health. A healthy UGA beats Bama yesterday, but they weren’t healthy and neither is FSU. Bama lost to TX the second game of the year when they were a mess on offense. That matters, but it is not indicative of the Bama team today.

Think of FSU vs Bama as both are right now. Imagine them playing ten times. Which team do you believe wins six or more? Now do the same with TX and Bama.

While I think leaving the SEC Champion out is wrong simply because the SEC Champion will be a favorite to win it all, this may be a good exercise. Will the Southeast outside of Tallahassee watch the CFP? Or would the country rejoice the SEC has no chance and flock to their TVs? Inquiring minds want to know.

I suspect the committee this morning is cursing Georgia.
