So who will be our next commit plus...

Doubtful. IMO. To see significant time for Young will be suprising. Example is T. Thomas for one. He is bigger, plays better competition and faster than Young yet the rivals ratings are similar. I think Thomas is much more likely to contribute than Young.

My point was that people hang all over whether Rivals gives a kid 4* or not... then you get a 4* who never contributes. If he does anything at all, he will have done more to earn his scholarship than Askew has.

This guy has made a ton of tackles on D for the amount of playing time that he has gotten. I'm pretty impressed with his ability. Crump and Sapp have both been very reliable on special teams. That's a good sign for the future as far as I'm concerned.

Can't be. It is surely a sign that UT football is doomed since they didn't get 4* from Rivals. It doesn't matter how good they really are... don't you know that no one can win championships in football without signing a whole team of 4* and 5* players?:whistling:

Confucius say Boy Scout good. Pants below the ass bad.

Not worried about stars at this point. These kids have yet to play their senior seasons. Some could shoot up to 4 or 5 and some could fall to 2.

So I went over to a USC board yesterday out of boredom to see if/how much they were freaking out after their second loss. I also wanted to see what they thought about Monte since their defense is so awful. The funny thing is the OP stated that they had all these highly-rated players on defense, and was wondering how the D could be so bad. The majority of posters that responded stated that the players had low football IQ's and that they didn't "get it". They stated that they didn't care how many stars a player had, and that it will take getting in recruits that the staff wants to be able to run their system effectively(even though they've run the Tampa 2 before now). I contrast that to our board and it seems that everyone here wants all of the highly-touted recruits, everything else be da****. I just thought that was really interesting how with both of our teams struggling, but for different reasons, the two fanbases seem to have opposite views. USC fans want more guys that "get it", that the "coaches want to fit their system", and that stars don't matter. It seems that everytime that gets mentioned around here the mob is after the poster.

Anyway, I just thought that was interesting and figured I would share. *Enter obligatory comments about how much of an idiot I am for visiting said board or about how you don't care what their fans say. Sprinkle in a "cool story" or two also.*
The really sweet part is Monte likely won't be there once they get "their" players in place. I hate Kiffin but I think he is a decent coach. The delicious part is the deck is so stacked against him that I see him failing no matter what.

But yeah your point is taken that is a defense loaded with supposed talent if you go by rating services but they are absolutely pathetic as a unit.

I could be completely mistaken but I think we are taking a lot of versatile players who can play many positions and many different schemes. I think we take and convert a lot more DBs to LBs so we can defend the spread and just get more speed on the field as far as defense. I also think we're looking at addressing special teams in recruiting more so than we've done in the past.

Re: talent eval...I trust the coaches for a couple reasons: 1) history, Dooley as RC for LSU, Chaney & Thompson as known good recruiters & Chaney has having coached up Brees at Purdue, et al, which brings me to 2) I trust the coaches ability to "coach up" these guys:

Give CCS a 3* DT or DE, & I guarantee while they may not be a 1st team AA by their Sr year, they will be darn good. Hiestand has made great strides with the OL. Baggett is the man. Thompson is the man. Our ST's coach Eric something is the man. I think 3*'s are not the death knell they used to be for us.

Don't feel bad for visiting the USC boards after a loss (or even a close win over an inferior opponent). I do it, too. You either get some pretty good, level-headed insight, or some very funny comments about the happening's (or lack thereof) at USC. Either way those boards are hilarious.

That said, I noticed the same thing and found it an ironic contrast that the abundance of talent just wasn't doing at USC. To be fair similar situations happened at UT also during the earlier 2000's. Fulmer had great recruiting classes from 00-05 but failed to convert that into championships. Sometimes you need the right guys, not the most talented guys. A full team of 5 stars and elite-talent athletes won't win championships, you need the foundation players also (alabama is a good example of this).

Also I've noticed that many of the posters who seem to have a large (or decent) background in sports don't seem to care nearly as much about the lack of perceived talent that this staff is bringing it. In sports talent matters...a lot. But effort and mindset are just as important. The difference between Florida in 08 and Alabama in 08 wasn't that Alabama was massively more talented, but they had a mental edginess and a work ethic Florida didn't.

Team sports is a mix and you need all types. All this garbage said, I think UT still needs to bring in some beasty talent to win the SEC, but I don't have an issue with building a foundation for this class before swinging for the fences.

Crump has put on some serious muscle while on campus.

Oh yeah. He's from my old high school too. I think he and Propst will start next year. Propst really surprised me seeing that most players from Hoover are never any good in college. He is real active in the middle and physical at the point of attack.

I can't see them starting over Johnson or Lathers next year, but if King don't get it together, Crump may take his spot.

It does look like Probst is almost a lock to to start at MLB his final 2 years.

Austin Johnson has a lot to prove as tackler. I really want to see him fill the running lane and playing downhill. Propst looked to be playing downhill. And if he plays like that come spring he'll start. Lathers will have a battle on his hands for the weak side. While I think King will start on the strongside. Lathers may be starting now but he doesn't make a lot of big plays.

Where do you see A.J. Johnson playing?

We'll see when he gets here. Hope Martaze Jackson plays up to his potential. We should have a good group of LBs next year. Hopefully some big hitters that can force a few fumbles and stop some guys on 3 and short.
