Some of these players owe Butch Jones some effort.

@OP...I always wonder about the whole "lack of effort" thing, because it's really hard to gauge.

I was blasted for saying we didn't show a lack of effort against SOLA in the second half, that the players just got their confidence hurt by the turnovers.

How can anyone possibly crawl inside the head of the players and say "yeah, he's not trying". Sometimes it's a lack of decisiveness caused by lack of confidence, that can make it look like a player is loafing.

And the other thing is sometimes they just are not very good. Auburn is clearly fast and really good, from what I saw, at blocking downfield with their WRs. Heck, the WRs don't have anything else to do, they might as well block well.

Having said that, sometimes it's so obvious that you can absolutely spot a lack of effort. I think this did happen increasingly on Saturday as the game wore on.

But I think often some are quick to attribute EVERYTHING to "lack of effort", and to me that's too easy to do, for something that IMO is really hard to gauge.

Brightest post of the day IMO

So are you actually saying Butch never needs to make adjustments and to just keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results

I didn't say that. I said that is what Butch may have been thinking. If you go back and read my posts since Saturday you would also see that I actually noticed on Saturday that we didn't make any adjustments during the game. We actually started out on defense out flanked before the ball was snapped, after getting torched on the perimeter many times. We did nothing to gain containment with our ends. We also ran very few run blitzes to try and force Auburn to beat us through the air.
With that said, if players aren't doing what they are coached to do, adjustments won't help.
I also noticed we kept kicking to them deep even on the squib kick. I thought we should have kicked the ball high and to the upbacks.
I do think our effort was so poor by half of this team, that the best laid game plan would have failed. I could be wrong though.

The AU game was going to be mailed in no matter what CBJ and his staff did or did not do. You could see that against Mizzou, I think the Bammer game took a lot out of them, they just showed up for Mizzou and Auburn, it was an easy call. That said I see da Vols playing lights out against Vandy & UK and go bowling. IMO that's where the seniors on this team have had their heads and it has shown during the past few games, but they'll massacre Vandy is my prediction.

They did?

The defensive line was on the field less than 8 minutes in the first half. The effort problem begins with them. I don't care how much faster Auburn was--the chasms they had to run through made the speed difference insignificant.

Auburn ran for over 200 yards on LSU. They put up 379 rushing yards on TAMU. Does that mean both of their defenses are slow?

The only problem I have with what I saw Saturday; again, is players getting by with loafing, and not being physical. That responsibility falls squarely on Butch's shoulders.

One of the biggest problems I have seen is that Butch challenged his players to be more physical and give more effort after Alabama and the result was Missouri.

He challenged them to be more physical after Missouri and the result was Auburn.

He seems to be losing the team. At some point you have to start benching a few guys to get the point across.

Butch Jones owes his players a gameplan that actually gives them a chance to compete.

Agree SGM. It looked like they just lost confidence in Dobbs and the D looked lost. I can't believe they kept punting to that fast guy.

What is this the sixth year for special team problems, last year could not hit a point after this year something else, a little speed would help out big time.:ermm:

Yes! And your above post about stopping two plays! That made me crazy! The QB threw like 7 passes! They bit on the RB every play! Uggggggg!

It's not hard to gauge when they are jogging, or standing and watching as the play goes on around them. It's not hard to gauge when a wedge blocker runs right passed the guy who makes the tackle without even trying to block him. It isn't as easy to sermon TV as it is live.

I was there Saturday, and I didn't see a whole lot of the specific things you mention.

What I did see was a very good Auburn return guy and some of our players just barely missing on the returns, and also out of place. They did seem slower than usual getting down field, maybe that was lack of effort. Or maybe for some reason we didn't put enough "A" players on special teams. Maybe the coaches were trying to get some younger guys PT. I saw a couple huge linemen lumbering after Jones on one kick return, but that must have been a punt.

On run D, the main thing I saw was the players getting fooled out of their jocks by the read option. They never seemed to realize Marshall kept the ball until it was too late.

I did see a couple times when a player or players seemed to stop after the Auburn back ran by them....obviously it was too late to stop him but I would have liked them to try.

I am not denying there was some quitting going on Saturday. I am just saying it wasn't the only factor and it wasn't the entire team. I never saw AJ take a play off, for instance.

Think about what you just said. #46 came in and flew to the ball... That's Max Arnold... a VERY slow, walk-on S.

Again, if your players WITH speed aren't being coached up and motivated to play like that... then it AIN'T a talent problem.

But think about what you just said a slow player has been coached to play the game fast. So there is some coaching going on.

I think the player I was referring to was Logan Cavendar a slow MLB.

The Vols know they need a team transplant and it will be interesting to see if they will win another game. This team is short on leadership as well as talent and I wouldn't be surprised to see 2 more loses and end up at 4-8, time will tell.

Let's face it, this 2013 UT Football Team is a very poor example of an SEC team. This team is the hardest UT team to watch that I can remember, ever!

Maybe the 21 points on special teams pretty much tells the story when injuries and lack of depth and speed, playing freshman that are hitting the wall. Hopefully the week off will help the younger players get there legs back, the schedule is killing the mojo Butch has going on. The starters are playing too many snaps on special teams, if you look at the big boys hardly ever do you see starters playing any special teams snaps let alone 70 to 80 pays a games with the schedule we have, its just the situation we are in with the turn over of coaches. If anything we need Butch here for 10 years to get the food chain filled up.

Should we give Butch 10 years to straighten out this Train Wreck?

Yeah i never get the whole we're tired and wore out bit, considering all the T.V. timeouts and all that stuff. Seems like an excuse for losing. If your playing college level ball you should be able to get out there and run all day/night long! Now the depth with injuries and being able to send in 3 first strings like Bama, I can see where it definitely holds an advantage!

The sad thing is (not to whip a dead horse) if Dooley was still coach this is all we would have to work with. In 3 years he didn't build SHAT!

I just think it's the culture right now. When things start going bad it just snowballs. These seniors especially have been beat down so much that they just accept to them the fate they have suffered for 4 yrs. It's backwards but we will need this years frosh and next years class to take leadership and refuse to let a losing mentality to seep in next year. JMO.
