Some positive talk regarding Tennessee on the radio this morning

It also could have been a 4 win season if not for a miracle catch against So. Carolina.

Yeah, everyone tends to shy away from that detail, but it took a miraculous one handed falling down catch to get that W or else it was a 4 win season. CBJ was that close to going 4-8 in his first season, with a loss to Vandy to boot.

And it was a (ahem..bad) call on Pig that gave Georgia a chance to take the game - a mere few inches and CBJ would have gone bowling in his first year and beaten 2 highly ranked teams. Any given Saturday...

Don't care who this guy is. The Vols will be lucky... LUCKY and Jones will be brilliant if they get 5 wins this year... or so says the "positive" experts here.:whistling:

In all seriousness, this is kind of what I have been trying to say. This is a team that should win 6-8 games barring some kind of injury disaster. There ARE some question marks but EVERY team has them right now. Some of you guys throw stones and accuse me of being negative for having high expectations... and saying Jones should meet them. In truth, who's negative? The one expecting better or the one settling for worse?

Im confused. Is Tennessee gonna suck cause OU is gonna beat them up so bad they only win 5 games or are they gonna surprise people due to the new talent coming in? isnt that's what he said?

To quote Gilligan, "Oh, who put that record back on?" Enough already, geez....

UT is going to win 6-8 games, possibly beat OU or bama, and be competitive in losses or it will be an under achieving season and time for new coordinators.

Funny you would bring up USCe.

Spurrier's second college career unlike his first one has been built on winning close games.

In truth, and few have been any harder on the staff for last year's results than me, UT was probably Worley's injury away from a 6 win season or even 7. I think a game "managed" differently vs Mizzou would have been MUCH more competitive.

We could have beaten Mizzou last year IMO. Their weakest point was their secondary. For all his faults, Worley can expose a weak secondary. It would have been a tough game to win, but our downfall was having a QB on the field that (at the time) couldn't throw a ball to save his life. A QB whose strength lies in his ability to run the ball doesn't do very well against a team with a monster D-line like Mizzou's.

This is either:

1. The trajectory of Alec Baldwin's career, or

2. Johnny M's second favorite dream (after Tennessee winning National Championships)

I was actually there. Dobbs looked good throwing it. Several MU fans were saying he was going to be a good one.

His turnovers were huge. In spite of those accusing Worley of being inaccurate, he had learned to throw the ball away from trouble to avoid INT's. USA probably gave them a good coaching tool.

I really like Dobbs' potential... but UT needed someone with Worley's maturity, leadership, and head all season last year. Dobbs just wasn't ready.

Losing to Oregon wasn't the problem. Losing to Vandy was. The Oregon game should have helped us against UF, but it didn't.

So you replace Oregon with a creampuff, go to a 4th tier bowl, and beat a Tulsa type team. Does that really make you feel a whole lot better about the program? Afterall UT still would have lost to: UF, UGA, Bama, Auburn, Mizzou, and Vandy! The measuring stick shouldn't be to beat directional schools but to win games in the SEC.

This is like trying to reason with a fence post. Did UT haver a CHOICE of whether Vandy was on the schedule or not? NOOOOOOOO!! Did they have a choice as to whether Oregon and Oklahoma were? Yes.
I have heard your same response regurgitated. "We shouda beat Vandy." As if scheduling an out of conference game at has anything to do with whether UT beat Vandy. Vandy was good team, and I can't say with any honesty that UT should have beat them.
Going to a bowl and beating a Tulsa type team would be BETTER for the UT program than going 5-7 for the 3rd year in a row. How I FEEL is irrelevant. Whereas, the "we're UT and we don't back down from no one," is strictly emotional bull**** that I could care less about. That is all feeling and not realistic. So, my interest is in seeing take steps forward and the schedule is a big issue. Right now, UT has the 3rd hardest schedule in the nation. And in my opinion is headed for another 5-7. The difference in going 6-6 with at least a chance to play in a bowl and end with a winning record is significant in my opinion.

But as they say, pride goeth before a fall.

I also think the OU scheduling was terrible.

I'm all for a home and home against them and I think it will be a fantastic environment in Norman, but dang... Wait until we aren't rebuilding! Lol

Wasn't that Oklahoma game schedule like 7 years ago?

And regardless of when it was scheduled, I don't like ducking and dodging teams.

Beating 4 OOC creampuffs, Vandy and Kensucky to get to 6-6 and a bowl doesnt make me feel good and shouldnt make the players feel good either.

We need to actually beat tough SEC teams. Butch beat USC last year and really outplayed and nearly beat Georgia but for one endzone fumble.

If we beat Georgia or played better versus a worse Florida team or beat Vandy or Missouri then the Oregon game doesnt matter. We had plenty of opportunity to go 6-6 last year regardless of that Oregon game.

Playing 4 creampuffs is akin to saying you killed a bear that was chained to a tree.

I think it would have been better to schedule a harder game so these players dont forget what real football is supposed to look like. Also, it would be a huge program booster if we could manage to beat a strong OOC opponent. If we beat a crap team that nobody ever heard of, who damn cares? In my opinion, playing a tough OOC team and really competing and getting stronger is way better for the program than scheduling a creampuff just to get to 6-6.

scheduled 9 years ago (three head coaches ago). Back when we could still take care of business inside the SEC.

I agree with this. It also gets us another nationally televised game which can't hurt with recruiting.

What an asinine conversation to be having. Your point is that we should have purposely scheduled four easy wins to protect ourselves and virtually guarantee a 6-6 record.

But let me tell you this, if you cant beat freaking Vanderbilt, you need to go to a quiet room, pull out your pistol and blow your f'ing head off because if you say "we lost to Vanderbilt" then literally nothing you have to say after that even matters at all. You might as well save your breath. Once you lose to Vanderbilt, your program has officially become a joke. This is one (of many) reasons that Dooley is "no longer with us".

If we cant beat Vanderbilt to make it to 6-6 then you can take your opinion about scheduling Oregon and Oklahoma and go pick sh!t with the chickens.
