I certainly am not predicting victory over Oklahoma, but I can see parallels between preseason expectations associated with the 2005 Tennessee team and the 2014 Oklahoma squad. We rode a convincing 38-7 victory over Texas A & M in the 2005 Cotton Bowl into a top five preseason ranking, only to fall flat on our faces and finish 5-6, with one of the most inept offenses in Tennessee history. Conversely, Oklahoma played an exceptional game against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, but the Crimson Tidy Bowl boys also somnambulated their way through much of that game. I wouldn't be overly shocked to see Oklahoma fail to live up to the high degree of preseason hype surrounding them this year.

In truth, and few have been any harder on the staff for last year's results than me, UT was probably Worley's injury away from a 6 win season or even 7. I think a game "managed" differently vs Mizzou would have been MUCH more competitive.

I'm curious here for your thoughts here. How much more competitive do you feel the game would have been?

I mean they pretty much did what they wanted against that defense; the only reason UT only held them to 31 even was because half way through the 3rd quarter they called off the dogs and just ran the ball every play until the game was over.

Our defense really couldn't stop them though. Remember, among others scores the wide open touchdown catch they had?

I agree their secondary - yards wise - was their weakest point, but I don't think our passing offense was anywhere near efficient enough to definitely beat them that game with how the defense played. (Edit: I just looked it up. That defense also led the conference in interceptions...as well as fumble recoveries.)

I think Worley gets them a couple of scores in the 1st half. That changes MU's approach. If you'll remember, they struggled early when trying to run their regular style/playcalling. It wasn't so much that they called off the dogs as they found something that worked and ran it. They would have only stopped if UT had stopped it. If UT had put points on the board, I think that would have put more pressure on Mauk. UT's inability to score let them go to the run game. Again, Mauk started 4 games and was over 50% completions in one of them (not UT).

Frankly, Mizzou's D wasn't better than USCe. Versus the SEC they played a much lighter schedule than UT and avg'd holding opponents to only 5 ypg less. They were more successful in scoring D but Worley would have moved the ball against them to keep their O off the field. Worley far more than Dobbs at that point understood tempo and pace. He would have gotten them into the right play. Just the simple "management" things that make an O more effective if less flashy.

I think the game would have gone into the 4th qtr with UT having a chance to win it.

Better worry about beating Utah St. First. Huge Vol fan here but this program is still not anywhere close to being able to compete with the likes of an Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, or even AU at this point. In a year or two, maybe.. The only way to win those games right now is if the other team plays completely flat and we win the turnover ratio by at least 3 to 1

This is true...we likely would've lost the game if not for that amazing catch, but do not forget that USCe should have been called for defensive pi on the play. Also, Worley was being rushed and was a second away from being sacked so he threw it up to North knowing that he would have a good chance of making that catch against one on one coverage. That was a great play as much as it was a lucky play.

It bothers me to read about that game when people talk about it like we only won because of one freak catch. Tennessee as a team, Worley included, played a great second half, and we earned that win.

I agree. I was responding to a post that someone thought that we could have had a 7 or 8 win season IF this and IF that. I merely pointed out that it also could have been worse. A big factor in the S.C. game was a season's worst performance by Conner Shaw. Some of that may have been due to our defense that game.

Not exactly. Played like an 11-win team first half, played like a 5 or 6 win team second half.
