Folks... the wheels were turning pretty fast before, but this shat just got real after this release from Cheek. I wonder how they came up with $6 mil per year as the number? Hmmm...

I'll take heat for this, but I'm cool with it.

It's a sad day when we start cutting academic and scholastic opportunities/monies for non-student athletes so you can hire a football coach because "that's what the fans want."

Go ahead and flame away...........Gator, i'm scared of UT, UT is back, etc......I've heard it all.

When tuition is going up for students by double digit percentages every year, this stuff stings other kids even if it helps a fan base when these decisions are made.

I'm assuming this is an emergency move and will only be temporary. athletics contribute immensely to money for academics. Investing that money into the football program will pay back 2-fold, maybe more

edit: also, that annual gift was just that...a gift (at least that's what they're saying). It isn't a compulsory donation

Solid response. That's very possible too...........seem to be rolling the dice that the payback will be pretty quick, and it could be.

If the athletic department generates the money they should be able to spend the money. When times are great and the AD can help out the academic side that is a win win. Right now we're not in a win win. JMO.

Typical response.

Sorry man, but I feel for some of the academic programs that, at least in the short term, are going to lose funding so you can find a coach who can beat Alabama, Florida, or whoever..........as if that's the greater mission in life.

I think you're missing the point. A powerful football program benefits everyone. A football program that sucks ass is not generating the kind of money that potentially can be and for now the AD needs to be able to make use of the AD's own funds.

DUde the football program has been giving the university like $50 million a year for a zillion years. It is just a little shell game shuffle to avoid taxes.

Why you worried about the Vols 24/7? FSU gonna rip you a new one this weekend. U need to get over on a gayta board and fret

I get all that, but how would you like to be a current student and your major all of a sudden is cut because of lack of funds, etc.......

Just sucks in the near-term for some of the students, that's all.

Waco, The football program specifically and the Athletic Dept. in general has been giving 6-9 million to the University for several years, going back over Mike Hamilton's tenure.

It is my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, that we are the only SEC school gifting that much to the University, by far and away.

Hart said months ago that this was going to have to be looked at and might not be continued, and now it has been addressed.

This is what I referred to yesterday when I mentioned I didn't think gruden was coming prior, but athletic dept support and hurdles leapt are now making it possible. He still has to say yes, but I didn't think we would get through some A dept issues to be able to make it happen.

Appreciate all of the mature responses in here with some detail.

Salute to everyone who kept it classy and didn't get into stupid rhetoric.

Sometimes you have to make small sacrifices for the greater good. That's reality. If the AD is rolling again in 5 years many more will benefit than can now.

My understanding is that the current gift from athletics is substantially large and was set up during the best revenue years. I believe the athletic department should give back to academics but I think it is reasonable to vary that gift based on revenues. A gift based on percentage of annual revenue makes much better sense than a flat amount.
