IF Gruden comes...Ive been saying all along he is not but this is a game changer...there better be a clause in the contract preventing him to bolt to the NFL without a heavy financial penalty

6 million is not all that is available, That is just the money that is being put back into the athletics (football). With that being said, it will take at least another 6 million to put in coaches and so forth(housing). The money will never be the issue, ever. To many big boosters and alumni.

Gruden is coming within 100 miles of Knoxville.....his ego is NFL...not NCAA bull****

Hey butthurt, why go to the NFL when you already have a Super Bowl ring? If Gruden's ego is so big, it makes sense that he would now want to try to win a national championship in the toughest college conference on Earth.

I get all that, but how would you like to be a current student and your major all of a sudden is cut because of lack of funds, etc.......

Just sucks in the near-term for some of the students, that's all.

So glad you are so concerned about Tennessee business but maybe you should read that release again, might have missed this quote.

Most of this money has been used for scholarships and fellowships. We will continue to honor these commitments, primarily through private gifts. Let me emphasize, we will not reduce our commitment to students

The money is being handled Privately....

Can you florida fans even read? I know its not really valued in the swamp...

Gotta ask the question, why do a lot of people think that Gruden is THE answer especially since he doesn't have the college coaching background? I know a lot of college coaches go to the NFL only to fall on their face.

Now get Cheek to make Tennessees admissions standards the same as other SEC schools. If they qualify for Enrollment at LSU or Miss St, they should also be eligible at Tennessee. Get that one changed!

I'll take heat for this, but I'm cool with it.

It's a sad day when we start cutting academic and scholastic opportunities/monies for non-student athletes so you can hire a football coach because "that's what the fans want."

Go ahead and flame away...........Gator, i'm scared of UT, UT is back, etc......I've heard it all.

When tuition is going up for students by double digit percentages every year, this stuff stings other kids even if it helps a fan base when these decisions are made.
A stupid and myopic opinion. Athletics generate more than their fair share for academics. If you allow football to go the way it has you have diminished financial returns. You have to spend money to make money.

Fair question , bottom line is the man could recruit like a rock star. His name would get him in any living room or high school coaches office in the country. In college its about recruiting the players. He would also coach the heck out of em too. But he would take a back seat to no one in recruiting.

Waco, The football program specifically and the Athletic Dept. in general has been giving 6-9 million to the University for several years, going back over Mike Hamilton's tenure.

It is my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, that we are the only SEC school gifting that much to the University, by far and away.

Hart said months ago that this was going to have to be looked at and might not be continued, and now it has been addressed.

I am by that like I am by the asinine commercials being ran by the postal union beotching over having to fully fund the retirement benefits of their employees. Private business has to be accountable to their employees, so should the government. Maybe next time the powers that be will think twice about getting themselves into those kinds of contracts.

As a taxpayer I'm sick of this crap. I didn't like Dooley's version of UT Football but there's a lot of things in this world I don't like but can't change because I do not have the money to do so. It's about time our politicians and public employees had the same constraints placed on them. Politicians and Public Employees do a piss poor job of managing money and always have. Mike Hamilton had to be the worst manager of money of anyone I have ever seen in such a position. Yes, he built all kinds of fancy facilities on credit. That SOB set my grandkids into debt to pay off public debt such as that.

I'm tired of this notion that Athletic money should not go to the school to offset costs associated with the school's primary mission and that is to produce skilled people who will benefit this country with their knowledge or craft.

Now, that said, there's no doubt that Football makes big money at UT. The problem is the 900 other sports the University participates in and looses money on that force the athletic department into insolvency. Before they take the 1st dollar out of the academic budget they ought to start shutting down that stuff till they free up enough money and get the athletic department in the black, and yes, profits from the athletic department ought to go back into the academic side of the University.

Times are tough. The University collectively needs to quit spending money it doesn't have.

Appreciate all of the mature responses in here with some detail.

Salute to everyone who kept it classy and didn't get into stupid rhetoric.

you made some great points but you should check into your cold blooded backyard and see how much your AD contributes to the student side before you cast stones.

Typical response.

Sorry man, but I feel for some of the academic programs that, at least in the short term, are going to lose funding so you can find a coach who can beat Alabama, Florida, or whoever..........as if that's the greater mission in life.

At least we're CLEAR !
