Somebody must have had a little talk with Cheek

Typical response.

Sorry man, but I feel for some of the academic programs that, at least in the short term, are going to lose funding so you can find a coach who can beat Alabama, Florida, or whoever..........as if that's the greater mission in life.

To my knowledge no athletic department in the SEC transfers as much money to academics as UT and that's why our cash reserve is so small even though we're top 10 nationally in revenue. Basically UT has been using the football program to subsidize the fact that state spending on higher education in TN has been falling for years. I'm OK if the AD decides they can't afford the gift for a few years. I'm OK if Hart decides he can't afford the gift for the next decade. This is excellent news!

Not saying we are. But we announce Gruden, this state will come unhinged. Shotguns will be fired. Children will be scared! Fathers and sons will be drunk.

Typical Saturday night down in the holler son.

Doubt he had anything to do with this.

I'll bet he served an advisory role to those who can make Cheek sweat.

One of the issues we have is that we, or more correctly Hammy, allowed the Drake Group mentality to infiltrate us from the inside. Athletic revenue, once provided on an emergency basis (Dickey kept the libraries open once or twice while I was a student.), became regular fund resources for the academic side. At the same time, eligibility requirements for athletes entered a restrictive and bureaucratic phase making it much more difficult to recruit players now than it was during the Dickey years. These changes make it more difficult to compete in a conference comprehensively known for strong athletics programs.

We've went too far towards the anti-athletics side of the balancing beam. Hart has identified that as part of the problem. In this regard, I praise him for working to swing it back towards the level our competition generally resides in the SEC.

I'll take heat for this, but I'm cool with it.

It's a sad day when we start cutting academic and scholastic opportunities/monies for non-student athletes so you can hire a football coach because "that's what the fans want."

Go ahead and flame away...........Gator, i'm scared of UT, UT is back, etc......I've heard it all.

When tuition is going up for students by double digit percentages every year, this stuff stings other kids even if it helps a fan base when these decisions are made.

I think you are pretty short sighted, gator. Athletics is what drives universities like UT and UF. Obviously we haven't money because of instability and dumb decisions by our AD and administration. You should view it as a long term investment for the overall health of our great school, because that is exactly what it is. Once our AD recovers (the 3 year part) it will once again be putting money back into academics. And you are scared of UT.

From what I have heard, TN is one of a very few, and maybe the only, SEC school that was doing this in the first place. So there WACO KID...jk

The University, and the city of Knoxville, NEED the football program to get back to raking in money.

Per Jimmy Cheek:
"Most of this money has been used for scholarships and fellowships. We will continue to honor these commitments, primarily through private gifts. Let me emphasize, we will not reduce our commitment to students."

Did you not read the statement from Cheek. Your entire rant is off base and inaccurate. I'm not trying to flame you....you put your foot in your own mouth.

I get all that, but how would you like to be a current student and your major all of a sudden is cut because of lack of funds, etc.......

Just sucks in the near-term for some of the students, that's all.

you can't spell college! you miss spoke. "just sucks" when you meant. "you suck"

Appreciate all of the mature responses in here with some detail.

Salute to everyone who kept it classy and didn't get into stupid rhetoric.

If you didn't get a chance to see the 60 minutes segment on Michigan's Football program this past Sunday look it up online, it was eye opening. Major college football and the obscene amount of revenue it generates is what funds all the other sports in todays collegiate athletic landscape. Tennessee's at one point was solid enough to not only fund the entire athletic department but to substantially support the academic side of the university as well. It is unfortunate that poor decisions were made and money was squandered. The short term fix is painful but necessary to get UT back to where it was and always should be.

As I said a couple of days ago. Cheek would have a statement just as soon as the Governor eased the heel pressure from Cheek's throat.

They're not cutting any funds for students. The funds being diverted back to the AD will be replaced by private gifts ---- hence, end result is the same for the students.

Everyone here knows you're an epic troll, but as a former student I agree with this to some extent. However, I would have never gone to school at UT if I didn't grow up a lifelong football fan, and many others would likely say the same.
