Something is very wrong, VolNation...

This was a great thread OP if for no other reason than it allowed me to add a few bigots to my ignore list.

Your sentiment rings true but it could've been communicated in a different manner. As it's related to this forum, the lack of perspective isn't that there was a shooting in Kenya or even Chicago. The lack of perspective is people doing things like comparing CBJ to CDD and calling for coordinators' jobs 4 games into the season.

Good post! I don't think that the OP was "comparing". That has been brought up and, although I do not know the OP, my take was that the reference was used as a general point. The point was that the world is a deadly and serious place. We are very lucky to live where we do and indulge in games played by "our teams", rarely having our lives hang in a balance where every single breath is measured and appreciated. So, when so many seem to live in such shallow pools that another loss during what we ALL KNEW was a rebuilding START causes a reaction/meltdown/name calling of boys that chose our institution for which to give their all and the coaches that show no fear in doing the grunt work every week, brick by brick while knowing full well the enormity of the job , then it may be turning a game (that we all love) into an exhibit on misaligned priorities. In the scope of things and sliced any way that you want, it is STILL A GAME.

So the Vols Lose and Kenyan's die?

Man, you just added 10000000000000 times the pressure to CBJ to win.

I hate the tragedy, I am much more worried about my own countrymen in Colorado going through the tragedy out there, or the kids who got washed down stream in Chattanooga today that are missing. Or the families of the victims of the shooter at the shipyard earlier in the week.

Guess what, it is a tragic world we live in.. CFB isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things... but we still like it, still love it, still enjoy it, still want the best for what we have in our Vols.

this is a message board dedicated to Tennessee Football... why are you surprised?

I don't think that the OP was surprised by any of that and the tragedies that you listed he would gladly sub the Kenyan thing for (since it seems to have created so much confusion that draws from a mention used to simply illustrate that MANY TIMES, some on here (not you poster, I think that you get it) emotionally elevate this to a level that should be reserved for true tragedy. Please name me one team in the SEC who has gone through the multitude of coaching changes in the past 4 years and in one coaches first year, has to play #1 and #2 and Florida all on the road.
Anyone who thinks we would have been undefeated at this point is literally brainless.
It would have been nice, but not probable. All be it 59-14 to Oregon is a little wider margin than most people would like.
Give us THIS SCHEDULE in about 2016 or 2017 and I'm sure there will be different results.
GO VOLS!

Great point! I do understand that when you put the OP's post under that lens.

Was I mad at the performance Saturday? Yes, sure, I was disappointed like any fan should be. So I did what any sensible person in my position would do. I went to a friends 30th birthday part and had a great time. CFB is just that CFB... not a tragedy IMHO.

The back of my sons Vols shirt says it best

"THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE.
2 NOBEL LAUREATES,
7 RHODES SCHOLARS,
6 PULITZER PRIZES,
10 ASTRONAUTS.
WE ALSO PLAY A LITTLE FOOTBALL."

Another NCAA saying said something like 95% of college athletes will go pro in something other than the sport they compete in.

Tennessee is still one of the best in the things that really matters... Football will catch up.. it will just take a little while.

Let not your heart be troubled Volnation... We still have much to be proud of... I am actually very proud that the school is outstanding...I would like to see the graduation rate of the Football players go up.

I can't remember the stat exactly but I heard that Oregon graduates an extremely high number of their football players, it was like 97%... That is truly an impressive stat.

Thanks!

Jim

I keep trying to imagine a bunch of grown ass adults freaking out, melting down, throwing tantrums, and constantly berating every aspect of our football program, but I just can't do it.

If that is indeed the case, and the posters here are not predominantly teenage boys and girls going through puberty, then something is very wrong.

This morning, 39 people were murdered at a mall in Kenya, but our world falls apart because a group of young men in pads don't perform to our unreasonably high expectations.

Having perspective is one thing, having the maturity to handle slight disappointments in a sporting competition is quite another.

I've been a Vol fan since I was old enough to know the color orange, and now my kids cheer along with me. But, over the past several years specifically, this board has become a cesspool for every level of over the top complaining I've ever seen.

When I first joined, it was fun to banter, talk through strategies, and even knock around the annoying aspects of the team or coaching staff.

But, now, coming on this board takes all the fun out of the game. I love when we win, I hate when we lose. But, either I misunderstand just how important college football is in the grand scheme, or this board grossly overreacts to something more trivial than we are willing to admit.

Anywho. Take it or leave it. React to me however you wish. I'm open to being wrong, but just wanted to share these thoughts.

Can't wait to see the Vols back at the top, and I'm willing to weather the big and small bumps along the way.

Go Vols.
There are like 100,000 people die every day. Why are those in Kenya different?

You care enough about this to berate others on a message board, because you think they evidently care too much? So you're concerned that it matters more to them than it should?

Or you're concerned that they're too negative? So how is it that their negative attitude towards the football program is more of an issue than your negative attitude towards these supposed posters who have you in emotional tatters?

I did the EXACT same thing!! Of course, being in the "SEC multicultural zone" of Chattanooga, I had several Auburn fans that had their game on and I had to fake like I was interested in their game a bit. Then, I poured a neat Raymer's Creek bourbon, went out on the deck and loaded a pipe full of Ashton tobacco and tried to forget!

I loaded a pipe with something else in the Springhill Suites parking lot in Gainesville!

1) Football is ported into our living room, not a play by play of genocide in one of the many countries in Africa.
2) Yes, you can tell by the way the post are written on here that at least 1/2 of those posting are teens.
3) Teens have no patience - our new instant gratification society.

You beat me to it. And it's not just teens sorry to say.

Either you are a drama queen on the level of my 16 year old niece or you haven't watched much Vol football these past 4-5 years.

and as i stated this is the worst football team i have ever seen take the field in neyland. dooley's crew was not this bad. i at least gave us a slight chance of winning. with this team there is pretty much no chance. might get 4 games this year.

wow, classy guy
I know, right? If for no other reason, I love this thread for putting a glaring fact in my grill: This board is populated by self absorbed idiot kids with a seriously challenged worldview.....or, worse yet, many adults that couple a high level of idiocy with misplaced "uber-passion". Most have never hit my radar, but I am shocked and appalled by a few.

What's sad is people have become so high and mighty that any discussion that disagrees with their point of few is bashed, the poster is called names and they call each other whiners ect ect. I'm not sure exactly when it changed but forums used to be used to discuss and debate differing opinions but I guess those days are gone.

Just because someone disagrees with your opinion of a coach, player team or state of the program does not make them wrong, less mature than you, a whiner or less of a true Vol.

Now you *****ing little whining girls stop the arguing and be more mature so you can agree with me or your not a true Vfl.

If disgruntled Vol fans were posting comments on CNN, I would understand your argument. But this is a UT messageboard. If you think by discussing UT football means we have an emotional and moral deficit, you should just turn off the game and turn on the 700 club.

The 700 Club is still on the air!?

And your solution would be? Sorry, but I don't give a rat's ass what happens in Kenya or Syria or Iran or any other muslim country. If you are an American and you go there, do so at your own risk.

I guess I keep coming back to this. So SpaceCoastVol, if you're killed by Al Qaeda (or any other) terrorists while hanging out at the local mall, this is OK (thumbs up!!!) if you're Muslim? But maybe not if you're Christian? (thumbs down!!!) (or Hindu or animist or anything else that's going on there) (not too sure where the thumbs are supposed to point here) But it's OK to get killed if you're Muslim?

Perhaps the perspective might be that these were HUMAN BEINGS going about their daily business at the local mall (stimulating the local economy, btw), and some collection of freakazoids who convinced themselves that God had spoken personally to them and had given them instructions on How to Make Things Better went out and slaughtered a bunch of everyday folks, like you and me, killing in the name of what they consider to be God.

Sorry, the way I learned it is that we're all God's critters, and we're all beloved by the Creator, and we all deserve some level of respect and value from this sorry-ass world. Meanwhile, you're just pitiful.

--oh, yes, and as others mentioned, Kenya is predominantly Christian. And you're just ignorant.

I read the first page , that was all I could handle but all I want to know is Kenya on our schedule anytime soon ? if not then who gives a sh$t about Kenya ? Tennessee football is more important than Kenya or any other Muslim country. The OP is more worried about muslims than Tn football. pretty sad

I've seen some really truly stupid posts in my time, but this one might just be THE dumbest. You just proved the point of the OP.

BTW, here are a couple tidbits...Kenya is a majority Christian country that got hit by Moslem terrorists The OP didn't bring it up to talk about it, he only used it as an example. He could easily have referred to the shootings in DC in the good ole US of A. As for you thought that Tennessee football is more important than the deaths of 39 people ANYWHERE...**** man, I actually feel sorry for you. There really isn't any response to that...you need help man. Wow......
