Sooner fan really looking forward to the game

Oklahoma has played absolutely nobody in the Big 8 for decades. All they really had to ever do is get fired up for 1 big game a year, and a very rare and occasional game against Colorado or Missouri. It was a pathetic conference they and Nebraska just cruised through year after year, decade after decade. They have no clue and no understanding what they about to get into now that they are in the SEC. They will go from winning 1 big game conference championships (annual game vs Nebraska) over and over and over again to likely none for a long period of time. They were a complete renegade program under Switzer, were on probation their 2 undefeated "national title" years of '74 and '75 and couldn't appear on TV at all. I certainly have a lot of respect for Bud Wilkinson and also his and Neyland's friendship but even in the '50s and '60s it was the same deal. Play absolutely nobody, win meaningless Big 8 titles and rack up long winning streaks.

To be fair, Oklahoma still played Texas every year (it was just an OOC game) so they had Nebraska, Texas, and generally 1-2 more tough opponents OOC. Colorado had good teams here and there as well. People forget that because Colorado has pretty much been crap since 2001.

The Big8 teams seem to handle themselves well against the SEC back in the day. Take 1995 Florida vs Nebraska or 1997 Tennessee vs Nebraska as examples.

Most the old Conferences had 2-3 powers and more regional teams. SEC had 6 historic powers but even with it, Auburn and LSU really weren't as good as they have been since 2000 (especially LSU) and Florida really wasn't that consistent of a program until the 1990s. Auburn did have some great teams in the 1980s but they were pretty bland before then.

Ironically, Tennessee was once an SEC power but boy did we fall off hard after 2001 (I really think the SEC CG in 2001 was our last big swan song, we just didn't look the same, even with Fulmer, after it. Heupel is getting us back).

Oof, don't remind me. The curse of the backup QB started here.

They did win a conference with little to no Competition. But, they have always had SEC talent. Since 2000, Oklahoma has played 13 teams that were in the SEC. They went 8-5 in that span. The 5 teams they lost to, either won or played for the national championship, getting outscored 207 to 138. Now, 2017, 18, and 19. LSU, Bama, and UGA were absolutely LOADED with 5* talent. The way they had stockpiled their classes was insane. Just goes to prove that Oklahoma was on a downhill slope once Bob Stoops left. The SEC is the big boy league. They wont win it as easily as they won the Big 12. That being said, this has no bearing on what happens on Saturday. Oklahoma will come into this game on fire for multiple reasons. 1. Its their first SEC game, 2. They will hear all week how TN is gonna run the score up on them, 3. Noone is gonna pick them to win the game except for the guest picker on Saturday.

This is the issue. Prior to Saban, no one recruited like that. Take Heupel's class this year, it would be the #2 class back in the 1990s. It is definitely on par with a Fulmer class. However, Fulmer never had anything like Saban to contend with. The closet thing was Miami.

The sport had more parody as a result in that more teams could compete for titles. Look at the wide range of teams in the running or winning it pre-Saban vs. after Saban. A lot of it is the media. Games are more national broadcast and people in Oregon know as much about Alabama as they do Oregon. That wasn't the case many years back. You typically knew the regional powers and not the national powers as well.

Your narrative is wrong.

That Oklahoma 1975 team played #15 Pitt, #19 Colorado, #5 Texas, #19 Oklahoma State, #18 Missouri, #2 Nebraska and #5 Michigan. That's 7 ranked teams, 2 top 5 teams in a schedule of 12 games.

Meanwhile, 1998 Vols played #17 Syracuse, #2 Florida, #7 Georgia, #10 Arkansas, #23 Mississippi State and #2 Florida State. That's 6 ranked teams, 2 top 5 teams in a schedule of 13 games.

That’s one year, SEC play 4-8 ranked year in and year out. The big 8 or big 12 will never be better than SEC. And you have to go back to 1975!

We could easily have lost to Syracuse, Florida, Arkansas, Florida State, and I'm pretty sure we had to come from behind to beat Miss St. in the SEC Championship game. You could argue the 1996 and 1997 teams were better. We just couldn't beat Florida.

This narrative is wrong too.

When did the SEC finish with the #1, #2 and #3 ranked teams? The Big 8 accomplished that.

While the SEC has been the class of college football during the Saban years, other conferences have held that position in times past. For awhile, the Ivy League ruled college football. There's been times when the PAC was dominant, the B1G was dominant, and the Big 8 was dominant. The Big 8 champion once beat the SEC champion in a #1 versus #2 showdown at the end of the season by 32 points. In another #1 versus #2 showdown that happened years later, the Big 8 champion beat the SEC champion by 38 points.

You proved nothing wrong with my narrative. Thanks for the recap though

Your posting hypothesized that Oklahoma was successful because they played few tough opponents. You said quote "Oklahoma has played absolutely nobody in the Big 8 for decades. All they really had to ever do is get fired up for 1 big game a year, and a very rare and occasional game against Colorado or Missouri. It was a pathetic conference they and Nebraska just cruised through year after year, decade after decade."

I provided a counter-example where Oklahoma played more than 1 big game.

Moreover, I showed that the Sooner team you disparaged (1975 club) played more ranked teams than the last Tennessee team to win a championship -- the 1998 Vols.

Your hypothesis is disproven by counterexample.

I will give the Sooners credit for one thing. One of the best football games I ever saw was the 1971 game between Oklahoma and Nebraska. Don't care who your team is, you have to give that game its due.

Can’t imagine where they get where we’re going to run the score up. I don’t like this game just for that reason. They are not NC state and we’re fixing to find out!

Big Bad Wolf SEC is 22-23 vs Big 12 the last 10 years. They think they were relevant before Nicky. They were no more relevant than anybody else

Stop living in the 70s and 80s big 8 era. now Is now, and you will figure out what we mean this year when you go 7-5 or 8-4
