Sources Say: Marta Could be Much Better Than Expected

I don't think I've hidden the fact that Kellie was not my first pick to take over for Holly. If I'm being honest, she wasn't on my list...period. My preference was an established, proven coach. In her time as HC thus far, Kellie hasn't confirmed that I was correct in my original assessment of her...and she hasn't proved me wrong either. She's better than Holly for sure, and she won the games (for the most part) that she was expected to win and lost games against the teams ranked higher than Tennessee (but Arkansas and Kentucky should have been wins...Tennessee had clear inside advantages in both). I'm hoping that this year she does prove me wrong by stealing games against some of the teams picked to finish ahead of Tennessee in the SEC.

Cool like i said before i assume i’m going to ask and that can put some people off but it is what it is LOL

You forgot Luka Doncic. And tigers.

There's "better than expected" and there's laughably over the top. It was hardly limited to one comment, and I wasn't even the one who initially called it out.

Fans are starved for another elite program-changing freshman like Pat would bring in. I get it. I mean it is a one game sample size, and I know an undermanned WKU is basically the same as South Carolina and UConn.

She, like some of the other newcomers, had an encouraging debut. I just hope Marta can live up to the Michael Jordan with a mix of LeBron standard some of you have elevated her to...

Dang it, I did forget Luka, tigers and Wonder woman. But Marta is only a freshman so expectations should be tempered. We can't go crazy about it all.

So, my moderated expectations for Marta this season are averaging a triple double (leading the nation in assists of course) and carrying the LVs to the SEC title and a final four berth. You know, bare minimum stuff.

But after this season, no more baby coddling her. She will have to up her game.

Great, now you've made me puke you pompous narcissist. I don't need your agreement to validate my posts. You think you are some type of resident authority but your actually just a joke and an embarrassment. If people want to read your narcissist threads, that's on them. Calling it an official thread is just way over the top even for you and that says a lot.
Well I guess we are ready for some serious basketball with the name calling and deciding who is a pompous ass and who is not. Well in reality we are all stating our viewpoints which in reality might prove to be totally good, half good, not so good or just plain bad. Time will tell but whatever we are all diehard Lady Vol fans.

If we overhype Marta, it's because she seemed to check so many of the boxes of our dreams. Been waiting for that player for a minute. Even if it only lasts a minute against a bad team.

Conversely, if we're overly hard on Jordan Horston it's because she also checked all the boxes but not in a good way. As the ever brilliant madtown said in another thread, it's not that she had a bad game, it's that she had the exact same bad game she's struggled with before.

Jordan's problem has nothing to do with a leg injury nor under the weather. Her struggle is with decision-making and poise. In general I've decided this year that no one gets to use pandemic timing nor loss of practice time as an excuse since everyone's had the exact same amount of time. However, in Jordan's case it may actually have hurt. She needed time in the film room with a coach, hopefully having that now will help.

If I was a casual fan who didn't know the roster, I would have guessed Horston was the freshman playing her first game while Marta and Salary were the returning second year players...

Guys, Marta is an Alpha female...This is a very good thing. She is already like a coach on the floor....That is not an exaggeration, but a fact, witnessed by anyone watching the game this past Saturday....She was directing the girls where to be.....

Like I said, she is a Tiger!!!!

GT, do you think a TN degree is in Marta's future? Does she turn pro within the four years? Just askin......

Her chosen major tells me she’s likely to stay and finish her degree. You don’t just major in physics for fun. Certainly wouldn’t be a subject I’d pick if I knew there was a chance I wasn’t going to graduate lol. I would be right up in that hospitality and tourism management degree.

I think we go nine deep without much fall off in ability with this team. That wasn't the case last season. Davis, Burrell, Walker, Suarez, Green, Horston, KK, Key, and Salary. I don't think you lose much with any five of these players on the floor. McCoy played quite well three steals in the minutes she played and Renee got 15 minutes not that much production in game one expect she will go off with some three a few times this season. Darby injury losing ground on playing time even when she returns and Saunders looks to be only late in games even though her four minutes she was quite productive versus W Ky.

Was laying in bed thinking about this. We are a much deeper team than last season. At the 5 we are basically 3 deep. Green, Key and KK can all play interchangeably. Should mean that we can play much more physical on the defensive end. Less worry about foul trouble.

Definitely agree that the 9 you mentioned will get the bulk of the minutes. I do think she’ll use Rennie for some situational offense and her defense does look much better. Really don’t see McCoy breaking the 10 minute mark many times this season. She just isn’t there offensively, has a really hard time catching passes. Pretty good rebounder and defender but she’s a big liability on offense.

I agree. I think McCoy's role will be providing a spark by crashing the boards and being really physical in the post but her time will be limited. The reality is that the team has had an upgrade in talent from last season and some players will make their contributions on the practice court and in very specific role-bound appearances.

Of course, injuries and covid-19 can change a depth chart very quickly...

If our opponent goes zone, Rennie should get a lot of minutes. Davis, Marta, and Rennie should be our zone busters - mix and match a PG and C with those 3.

I agree with you we are a much deeper team than last season. Now when we get into the meat of our schedule. Playing Green 6-1 at the 5 will be a problem i just don`t see her being able to deal with the post players in the SEC. I could be wrong.

actually I want to see the posts go to work.
None of them stood out in game one
and 40 of ETSU's 62 points were in the paint

I would agree. I think she’ll give us some minutes at the 4 against bigger teams. She just doesn’t have the size to guard someone like Boston or Jones and Johnson at A&M.

Earlier in my career I had a boss, who did not have the capacity to know when there was humor whether he was or was not being laughed at. This thread had some joyous and creative humor, with or without relating to the thread content, and I believe the deficiency of my boss (rest in peace) exists in several of our boarders.

Two plays that the heroine of this thread made that were not mentioned: the inbound play - lob to her at the high post and she caught it high and immediately shot. The second was her long three pointer (called off for a charge) but with great form.

She popped from behind the heartbreak line like the champ she is....Hell of a girl!!!

Until they learn to want the ball and catch entry passes, the posts can go get rebounds. For at least 5 years, it seems like at least 25% of our entry passes get tipped or go through the wickets.
