Sources Say: Marta Could be Much Better Than Expected

Well I'll say it. Posts need to rebound. They should have pulled at least 20 in that many minutes.

Fair, I would agree it could have been better. We rebounded the ball well last season and returned all of our good rebounders this year. Plus added Green who ‘should’ be a good rebounder and Marta who appears to rebound the ball well. At the end of the day it’s a team effort. We were 3rd in the country in rebounding last season. If anything we should improve on that.

Bulkier can be another term for fat. This team looks horrible. Aside form Davis and Burrell you have a bunch of over weight girls who can’t run the floor or jump more than 3 inches.

Roustabout, I don't know you and so could be off base here, but your comment makes me think you may only ever watch Lady Vols games on TV. If you were to get within 50 feet of our players you'd be stunned by how much thinner they ALL look in person, but especially the post players. Every time I see them in person I have the same thought: "They look a LOT smaller in person than they do on TV." And players like Rennia and Rae look like downright skinny. Anyway, I was thinking the other day that if I can see that Kushkituah looks quite a bit thinner on TV this year, then she likely doesn't need to get any thinner if she wants to have enough bulk to stand her ground.

All that said, do I think some of our posts need to work on their leaping skills? Absolutely!

Just my 0.02.

Last year the team averaged 45 rebounds per game. In two games this season they are averaging 50 per game. While I’d like to see the posts rebound better, that has not been a problem in how the team is rebounding so far this season overall.

agree with this as well

I have done a study of top 25 teams and the vast majority of them have "team mentality" in rebounding
very few have top ten rebounders.
it needs to be a mindset that everybody except the furthest player away from the shot, crashes the boards....the furthest player is the fastbreak option for a quickly snagged outlet pass for an easy FB layup

It sure seems like a lot of people may have been expecting the team to begin this bizarro season by playing some pretty, near-flawless basketball. Seems a bit much this soon, even against lesser competition. I guarantee you everyone on the team is equal parts jacked up AND exhausted from the constant reminders that there's nothing normal about life as a college student-athlete right now. I plan to give them time to settle down and figure out how best to succeed this season.

There are just so many more obstacles for everyone to get over this year. For instance, I imagine it's weird for the players to know they're about to come face-to-face, unmasked, with people they can't know for SURE have been practicing safe distancing. I think that might stress me out a little -- or a lot. Yes, everyone is going through the same things, but I think we kinda have to cut 'em a little slack early on.

I’m watching their ability to run the floor, and move laterally. Tone and definition are pretty easy to judge. Davis and Burrell are the only players who look athletic.

Have you seen destiny? Horston?
maybe not

Agree on Destiny but it appears JH has added weight in her midsection. Definitely not as fit looking as last year. But she’s not the problem, there are several players that aren’t fit. Still.

she may have the "freshman ten" but it will be gone in no time,,,as she said, she had things that she dealt with this summer and they are over now...so look out, Jordan Horston of the end of the year, plus a little muscle,,,is back!

Yeah look at this pic; its like the "before photo" from a weight watchers shoot:

Destiny S. is probably 8% body fat!!! what a porker.

And Jordan Horston - I mean she looks lean and wiry but deep down we know she is wearing a skinny suit!!!!

And Jordan Walker she is only 50 to 75 pounds from fitting your description.

I can't do it. That is one fine looking team. We actually only have two wide body type players Green and KK. Last year, KK's fitness was suspect but she is moving much better this year. And the reality of Women's basketball is that you better have some wide bodies that can bang because many teams have that kind of player in the post.

I think if Coach Harper uses Marta right she will be productive every game she plays. If were going to try to use her as a point guard part of the game or do a lot of ball handling on the perimeter may not be as productive as everyone in the SEC has quick perimeter players. Marta is skilled but she is going to run into problems against quicker smaller players the ETSU game was evidence of that. I think Marta is a stretch four or three position player and I think she can really help the team by playing there every game and forget the 1 and 2.

ideas of her running the point should be left at the 4th qtr of the ETSU game lol I dont ever wanna see her play that position again this season

I would like to see Marta develop into a player that can be effective out front but she will need opportunities like she had against ETSU to get experience. Overall, she made more mistakes this game than last and these type games occur when you're a freshman. I think she can cause matchup nightmares for smaller players especially when she takes the opposing PG down low. I expect this is a consideration in getting her some minutes there. Of course, it could have been just hitting minute targets for other players too. With COVID, there may be instances when the experienced PGs are unavailable so we need more depth at all positions than we normally would.

I'm with you. I think JH looks stronger than last year, very fit. Anyone saying she doesn't look athletic is completely nuts.

She has definitely gained upper body strength. I would love to see her at the 4. With her leaping ability and new found strength, she would be unstoppable.
