Sources Say: Marta Could be Much Better Than Expected

Until they learn to want the ball and catch entry passes, the posts can go get rebounds. For at least 5 years, it seems like at least 25% of our entry passes get tipped or go through the wickets.
communication has to go both ways in the post
the passer has to make the right pass
the receiver has to call for and set up for the right pass

That's all fine and good but if the post doesn't go get the ball when it's passed it doesn't do any good at all. Too often they let the defender work around them on their post up and deflect the entry pass.

Doesn't go get the ball or has bad hands. Tennessee hasn't had a post player with good hands since Bashaara Graves and Isabelle Harrison played. They weren't the biggest of players, but they could track the ball like no one's business...as long as the pass was in their general vicinity.

Agreed.

And I'll tell you what. If I were coaching this team with the size and potential that our four posts have, I'd approach each game like I have 20 fouls between them, and then I would make darn sure that each of them, early on, established her physical presence on offense in some intimidating way. Not that I'd want my posts to hurt any opposing players, but I'd have them work on some not-so-delicate "make the defense respect the size and power of my body" moves. I'd find some really, really big, strong practice guys and tell my players to physically move those bigger, stronger guys out of the way. Sure, a bulldozer move will get you called for a hard offensive foul, but any defender that tries to edge around to deflect a pass to one of my posts is going to know it could be a mistake to do that. Our posts need to go HARD to get the ball.

And if not bring in a post through the transfer portal that will. i bet Keyen wears all of our other posts out in practice 😂 i mean she is a bully and i love it i wish i could give her an inch off each of the other posts and she would be a beast.

Strength is one piece; mobility is the other. The only one of the posts that seems to have good mobility is Key. KK can't jump, McCoy and Saunders are...athletically challenged, and ultimately I think Green is too short. They have a lot of bodies in the post, but they have some limitations that they need to work around.

Check the game out she has some intangibles that are like hmmm she can help in some areas. She does a lot of dirty work and i wanna see her lay some screens on some people

I believe Green has the body strength to play a lot like I remember former Texas star Stacy Stephens playing. Stephens was 6'1" too, but she was a force.

Coming out of the preseason cupcake series , it emerges that post is our big question mark. We have pieces but no whole. Obviously Key is the most likely to grow into the whole enchilada SEC caliber post player. Her growth needs to be consistent and steady. It's good to have Green and KK providing some of the other pieces.

Wouldn’t hurt my feelings a bit to see one of our post pick up an offensive foul posting up in the first couple minutes of the game. Let them feel that size. Make them think twice about how much contact they want lol. Gotta assert yourself in the post. Only time it’s ok to be a bully is in the paint!

We didn’t have nearly enough post touches against ETSU. When they do get the ball our posts still don’t make their move fast enough. Against smaller teams like ETSU it has to be quick, high ball, turn and score. At 6’4”/6’5” if you keep the ball as high as possible your defender has two options. 1 foul 2 let you score. Every time one of our big girls brought the ball down it was a turnover.

hopefully she's worked on her footwork this off season. She looks a little bulkier as well that can help her alot. AT times she just seemed a step slow on the college level last year.
Bulkier can be another term for fat. This team looks horrible. Aside form Davis and Burrell you have a bunch of over weight girls who can’t run the floor or jump more than 3 inches. The lack of athleticism was concerning.

I was really disappointed to see the lack of improvement in trimming down and toning up this team. If you want plod and trod basketball, this is your team. UConn will destroy this bunch.

So Horston, Salary and Walker are fat, slow and can't jump? Your observation skills appear lacking.

pretty harsh and thats not even true

Totally agree.

Playing the 4/5 in a combined 90 minutes Greene, Suarez, KK, Key, McCoy and Saunders had 17 points, 19 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 blocks, and 11 turnovers.

Yes, I know that’s 10 minutes more than the 80 total for the 4/5 but Suarez played some 3 and even some PG in this game.

I was wondering why Coach made Marta play PG in the 4th qtr???

I think she just wanted to see how it looked in live game. In her film she brought the ball up a lot playing for her teams in Spain. The speed of the game is much faster here though and she got stuck several times and was forced to make bad passes. I don’t think we’ll see her run the point again this season. Might be something we see more as her career goes on. Harper had Rennia set up the offense a few times also. Pretty clear she wants her scoring 3/4 players to be able to bring the ball up now and then so they can attack and get us a bucket when needed.

I would not count Suarez as a post at all.
So, only one post in the starting lineup. Suarez is listed as a guard.

She was a late edition to my post.

Removing her stats, the remaining posts had these stats.

Greene, KK, Key, McCoy and Saunders played 69 minutes with 15 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 blocks, and 5 turnovers.

I’ll add that they were 6-13 from the field.

They definitely need more from the 4/5.

@Bballnut1952 I agree 11 boards in 69 minutes is embarrassing.

Yeah 11 boards in 69 minutes would be embarrassing if calculating it like that made any sense at all. That is just a made up stat to make it look worse than it actually was. Makes no sense to evaluate Saunders and McCoy along with Green, Key and KK as the former two wont be seeing many (possibly any) minutes against good teams going forward.

For the record the other 3 collected 12 rebounds (someone can’t add) and scored 15 points and just 2 TOs. Would be nice to have more production from Kasi or Tamari individually but 8pts, 11 reb, 4 blocks and 1 TO is still a decent stat line if they’re splitting minutes and basically functioning as one center. The bulk of our scoring will come from Davis, Burrell and Horston. We only need about 10-15pts combined from the 5 position to be successful.

If we presume Key and KK get the minutes McCoy and Saunders played going forward they would average around 23-24 minutes a game and Keyen keeps her 15-20 minutes. If you adjust their totals to account for the reduced minutes against ETSU Key would have finished with about 9pts and 6 boards, Kasi 8 boards and 5 pts and Keyen stays at 1 board and 7 points.

For the 5 position that would give us about 14pts, 14 rebounds. That’s plenty of production from the 5 with Kasi and and KK splitting time. Plus by having them essentially split the position we get 10 fouls instead of 5. Could always be better but it’s not as catastrophically bad as that other joker tried to make it out to be since all he does here is stir the pot.

Keyen does need to rebound better. Period.

Friendly reminder that his chosen team of Rutgers tied at 30-30 on the boards with Monmouth (lol) in their opener.

Green will draw 6-5 Blessing Ejiofor of WV

I think Tamari or KK will start on Sunday due to the size WV brings. Martinez is their real threat in the paint. She plays down hill and she’s tough. Ejiofor has trouble against size, she’s never been very aggressive in her career. I think Key and Kasi will play the bulk of the minutes in the post Sunday. Just my guess, Coach is always doing something I wouldn’t expect with the lineup haha.
