No problem. Bugs me when I hear "Fire [Administrator Name]," and the reasoning is related to the performance of the football team.

To be fair, the biggest part of Hart's job has to do with the performance of the football team. If they aren't performing well and bringing in as much money as possible, then it doesn't really matter what the rest of the department is doing.

But, what if she made the statement to a reporter which she did?

Oh, I missed that. Wow, commenting to a reporter on something like this so quickly seems quite unprofessional. I wonder how that happened?

That would make it slander not libel if proven baseless.

What you say about consequences is true. The key is that the 1st protects against Government limiting freedom of speech except for within certain areas established in common law.

The example I had always been given was, if one were to choose to do so, one has freedom to, say, yell "fire" in a movie theater...but that doesn't mean he or she won't (or shouldn't) be arrested for inciting a riot afterwards either.

Did someone post what constitutes the "insubordination"?

I read earlier that he hadn't been attending event-planning meetings. Is that it, or is there more?

So many people need to understand that suffering the repercussions or consequences for what you choose to say or do is completely different than "protected freedom of speech" (which is no one can actually stop your ability to actually say it; not that whatever you say is protected from adverse consequence, correct?)

Freedom of Speech applies only to adverse actions taken by a state actor. The university qualifies, further case law on this I think restricts the freedom of speech only when the speaker is speaking outside his official job duties. This, I think, does not bode well for Sousa. The e-mail to the band members and other seems to point to him speaking as the band director and not as a citizen.

So there isn't a cause of action here.

I have 4 tickets to the game saturday and I just gave them away. I will not be part of a circus in front of a National TV audience because my University is run by a booger-picker..

This is NOT the way to resolve matters, they are acting more childish than Congress and that is certainly saying something.

So, GO VOLS, i'll be watching on TV until this BS is resolved.

Edit: I should say that I support the Band 10000%, it is one of the best gameday traditions around -- and they should have worked this out behind closed doors, but now that it is public -- YOU WANT A FIGHT UT?? YOU GOT ONE.

Coming from someone who has direct ties to the program, lots of friends in the program, in the musical activity, taught at Farragut high school for a year...

I've heard nothing but bad about Sousa from the time I got here. He's stuck in his ways. Makes stuff up. And extremely over dramatic. Everyone I've talked to in pots hates him with a burning passion. It's become one of, if not the smallest band in the sec.

But who cares about straight facts. People like to draw their own conclusions who have no ties at all on this board. :p

Well you're just nothing short of a genius aren't you? Since you know...you obviously know everything that's happened under Sousa.

October 14, 2013

I wanted you to know that Don Ryder has been named interim director of bands effective immediately.

Michael Stewart will begin serving as interim associate director of bands, also effective immediately.

Longtime Director Gary Sousa was placed on administrative leave earlier today pending an administrative review. This decision was made in the best interests of our students and the band program.

I met with the Pride of the Southland Band this afternoon to tell them how much I value their commitment and the many ways they contribute to campus life. I also look forward to working with them so that everyone can have the best game day experience possible.

Please join me in supporting the band leadership in their new roles. And let us all stand strong for the Pride of the Southland Band as we move forward.

Sincerely,
Jimmy Hyams

"Free speech" might be the least understood concept in message board history.

Nonsense. The definition of free speech is clear. It means you can say whatever you want without facing any consequences from anyone, even your boss!

That's in the CONSTITUTION, GAVol. By Georgia, do you mean the state of Georgia? Or maybe you mean Georgia as in the former Soviet Republic, because apparently you just don't get the FIRST AMENDMENT.

This post is sarcastic.

Probably something like this:

Cheek and Hart have losing athletics programs. They should be fired because their sole purpose at the university is to putting winning teams on the field.

Cheek's sole purpose is to have winning athletic teams? You are dumb.

And to think Hart has had time to turn around the UTAD? You are even dumber than I previously thought.

Except none of that stuff ever happens...The ones who whine about game attendance are the same ones who say that it's a throwaway year. Also, I've never seen anyone call for butch's head. But I see like a dozen posts on here everyday referring to such posts. Weird.
