Special Dispensation to Punch Your Children

Why do you worry about him? Is there wide spread violence against gays that I have missed? Are there Christians or anyone else calling for or advocating violence against anyone who is gay?

I see. Violence must be widespread before it is a problem to worry about.

Are there Christians or anyone else calling for or advocating violence against anyone who is gay?

Are you serious? Did you read this thread?

Does discrimination need to be violent before you worry about it?

1. There are Christians who are calling for and demanding that homosexual couples do not receive equal benefits from the state as compared to heterosexual couples.

2. There is widespread violence against homosexuals. According to the FBI, there were over 5,000 hate crimes against gays and lesbians in 2009.

3. This preacher, and his entire congregation, is advocating for violence against homosexuals. Fred Phelps is advocating for violence against homosexuals. Christ Triumphant Church in Lee's Summit, Missouri is advocating for violence against homosexuals. Kids in Ministry International is advocating for violence against homosexuals.

Christians are not calling for violence against gays. No one is discriminating against them either. I want to know why he is worried about him. Is he worried about him simply because most of America thinks homosexuality is wrong and believes they should not marry?

Are you asking why one might be worried about the pastor calling for parents to punch their children?

Christians are not calling for violence against gays.

You know, for sure, that this is false. Why do you deny it?

No one is calling for violence against gays, you are trying to play on people's fears and emotions. You know this but as a liberal loon this is your only tactic.

Since you know why he is worried please tell us.

Fighting benefits on the federal level is futile. It is coming. Here are my thoughts on the issue:
1. As a Christian with some level of theological understanding I have never understood why fundamentalism puts extra stress on sexual sin. What a person does with their penis or vagina is often much less harmful than other deeds done in the name of Christianity.
2. I love the OT model for the "priesthood". I think some level of "holiness" is required because the priest is a conduit or intermediary to God for their flock. Does that mean that a priest or preacher has to be blameless? That is simply impossible. I do think that they should be striving for a different level of holiness and spirituality. That may not necessarily exclude a homosexual from that role, but it adds a qualification to the job for any applicant.
3. On some sociological level, I think that homosexuals are striving for a level of normalcy that they will never receive in society. We are hard wired tribespeople. Even though we may accept and love homosexuals as a Christian body, I don't know if they will ever really be at peace (as a complete movement) because of basic human biology.

1. There are Christians who are calling for and demanding that homosexual couples do not receive equal benefits from the state as compared to heterosexual couples.

Christians are against same sex marriage, same as many non-christians.

Jesus said "to render to Caesar the things that are Caesars and render to God the things that are God's". That is a plain seperation of church and state.

Marriage is a religious ceremony and the state has not right to get involed in marriage.
Benefits are a state issue, religion should have no part in what benefits the state provides.
The state can provide the same benefits without marriage being involved.

2. There is widespread violence against homosexuals. According to the FBI, there were over 5,000 hate crimes against gays and lesbians in 2009.

There is violence against homosexuls, that is a sad truth. There is also violence against other groups. The people doing this violence are full of hate, they are not Christian.

This preacher is a nut, so are the others you mentioned. That is not Christian. People like this gives all religion a bad name. To reference the Bible again. Jesus said that "many will come in my name and deceive many" People like the ones you referenced are deceivers.

The preacher was not referencing violence against homosexuals, per say. He was referencing violence against the child. He is preaching that homosexuality is a sin and if your child shows any signs of homosexuality to correct them by beating it out of them. I would about guarantee he has preached the same message pertaining to other "sins" and instructed his congregation to beat it out of their children.

...if they are gay, of course.

I am less shocked that there are Christian preachers who believe this than that there is a room full of individuals cheering him on; or, maybe I am not shocked at all.

I think Gandhi said it best.

I Like Your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ.

My nephew is gay. He's a good kid, just graduated from UT in December, looking like he's about to land his first real job in his profession. I don't like constantly worrying about him because some in this country feel the need to hate and fear what is different. I want him to be happy in his life. If that includes marriage, I want him to have that. I don't feel it's right for the vocal majority to enslave people who don't share their ideals.

People can say "the Bible says..." all they want, but I know the Bible says a lot that is looked over or just out and out ignored. At the end of the day, none of us are God. If being gay is a sin, then they will be judged by the Lord on Judgement Day. It is not our place to act as judge now.

All the gay community wants is equality. What's wrong with that? What's wrong with wanting to be treated like any other couple in America? The idea may sound radical to some, but when this nation was founded, the ideas our forefathers set forth were considered radical. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, what happenned to these self-evident truths? These are our inalienable right as endowed upon us by our Creator. For so many who espouse "God" in government, I always thought it funny that the founders chose the word "Creator", not "God". Most Christians have forgotten that Christianity is not the law of the land. The law of the land allows them to practice Christianity. They are given that freedom. Yet they now deny freedom to those who wish to choose differently. We accept Muslims, Hindi, Buddhists, and any other form of religion, but we can't accept homosexuality? What is this great fear?

Once upon a time, I feared gay people. Then I met some. I was ignorant. The image I had in my mind was not accurate. These were not sick people spreading a disease. They were just people trying to live their lives. They were good people, mocked by others for being different. Shunned for being brave enough to say this is who I am. They were bullied. And once again, America is bullying them by denying them their rights of equality. You would think in this time now, when anti-bullying campaigns have been ramped up the way they have, that people would see this. But they don't. Bullying isn't just about violence, it's about making people seem less than what they are. By turning gays into second class citizens, we have denigrated them and made them seem to be lesser beings. They are not. They are people with hopes and dreams and families that love them. And all they want, all their families want, is for the country to acknowledge that they are no different from the rest of us.

Pass or not, I'm not even sure this NC law has any true meaning. What we need is a change at the national level. Maybe even an amendment to the Constitution. "All men are created equal." The things we forget. The things we take for granted. I'm not sure how the forefathers felt about homosexuality, but I do know the treatment gays are subject to now spits in the face of the ideals they set forth. It saddens me.

To those who are against gay marriage, I ask of you one thing. Take a step back and imagine government legislating your life in such a way. Imagine if their was a law prohibiting you from marrying your wife. How would you feel? You don't have to face that because this is a predominantly Christian country, but try imagining the government telling you you can't marry the person you love. Voting for people to have rights does not have to mean you condone their way of life. You are entitled to your opinions, but they are entitled to their rights. Let them have them. One of the first things I remember learning is the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. So how would you want to be treated?

Very well put, Weezer. Very.:good!:

I figure this sums everything up quite nicely.

First off, thanks to those of you with kind words.

Why do I worry about him? Well first, he's the closest thing I have to a son of my own. He lived with me a great portion of his life and no matter how old they get, you always worry. Second, if you truly believe gays are not being discriminated against, you are out of your ever loving mind. They are denied basic rights(such as marriage, lawful union, or whatever you would choose to call it, for one), they are bullied(Do you not keep up with the news? One of the main reasons the anti-bullying movement has gained momentum is the cyber-bullying gays have been submitted to.), and yes, violence still occurs. People fear that which is different from them and sometimes they resort to violence. Some people just hate and look for a reason for violence. In case you haven't noticed, the Aryan Brotherhood and the Black Panthers, and various other groups who are noted for their violence still exist.

Hatred is an ugly thing and it is very much alive in the world. The gay community is an easy target to focus on. I remember several years back some boys dragged a gay teen down the street. He was chained up and they drug him down the black top. His death was slow and agonizing and the reason they did it was because he was gay. "Christians" may not advocate violence, but they certainly don't show love and support for the gay community either. I believe they like to refer to them as "abominations". They reenforce this public notion it's okay to hate gays. I don't see why they are so narrow-minded about this particular issue. To hear some "Christians" talk, you would think they rank homosexuals up there with murderers and rapists and pedophiles. That's just ludicrous.

A lot of fear tactics here. All groups of people are subject to violence not just poor innocent gay people. Every time a gay person is hurt or killed is it a "hate crime" and committed against a gay person only because they are gay? Plenty of people get bullied, bullying has been going on since the beginning of time.

that's actually been done on here more than once

Murder has gone on since the beginning of time as well; maybe preachers should advocate for murder from the pulpit.

The bottom line is that this "man of god" is calling for physical violence against individuals that may be exhibiting tendencies which he believes may lead to homosexuality. Worse, yet, is that an entire room full of individuals is cheering him on.
