Sports Illustrated Reports A Rod...

Selig is officially the dumbest man in America today. You can't punish someone 6 years later, when there was no penalty for testing positive in 2003, in a supposed secretly done test.

I think maybe you need to read what Selig actually said and rethink your statement. He pointed out he has no plans to punish A-Rod and talked about how punishment didn't begin until 2004.

also, the fifth and six thread in this forum should give away my number one pick for my team.

People are seriously mentioning Pete Rose and Cal Ripken in the greatest-player argument?

Rose has his record only by playing five extra worthless years as the absolute worst first baseman in the league; he wrote his own name in for the last year of it. Ripken's record hurt his team too; he was a below-average player for the last seven years of his streak, and yet his team was completely imprisoned by it. I don't want any part of guys who forget that the reason you play the game is to help your team win.

Ripken should thank God for the following things:

1. That he played for an organization so lacking in backbone that they allowed him to cripple their team in pursuit of an utterly meaningless record.
2. That Barry Larkin couldn't stay healthy. At 100%, Larkin was twice the all around player Ripken was.
3. That he didn't play in the same era with the great offensive shortstops of today.

If any of those things go the other way, he'd be remembered as just another guy.

He should thank God for Earl Weaver, too, for not just automatically turning him into a 3B like almost every other manager in baseball would have at the time. Playing a 6'3" (or whatever he was) guy at SS in 1982 was unheard of. His offensive stats would have looked a whole lot less impressive at the time if he'd been playing 3B the whole time.

That is why I like VN. Not a baseball fan but you 2 just made some interesting and reasonable assertions. Not the type of comments you would ever see on a TV broadcast or mainstream paper, for the most part.

He obviously wouldn't be my first choice overall, but if I'm making my all-time team, Larkin is most likely my SS, regardless of his health problems.

Does he go in on the first ballot next year?

"While Alex deserves credit for publicly confronting the issue, there is no valid excuse for using such substances, and those who use them have shamed the game," Selig said.

Are you kidding me? He deserves credit for publicly confronting the issue? HE GOT CAUGHT....That is why he "confronted" the issue. Not to mention the fact that he is still lying.

Bud Selig is just as much to blame as any of the guys who were using. He should be ousted immediately...He is a disgrace to the game of baseball.

I'd be surprised. However, he does have some very influential supporters among voters, most notably Jayson Stark. I think he'll eventually get in, just don't think it happens next year. I'm still waiting for the voters to wake up and recognize the greatness of Tim Raines.

Now that Rice is in, I think Raines will get more pub. Back to Larkin though, didn't the Wizard get in on his first try? I'd take Ozzie's fielding every day over Larkin because while they both had phenomenal range, Ozzie had a little more. But Larkin was three times the hitter that Ozzie was.

Ozzie is comparable to Kirby Puckett in that respect. Really good players who got immense pub for their personality. Larkin, while an infinitely better player than Smith, doesn't have the unwarranted hype.

A) As long as Raines is out, there's no telling who'll manage to get in. Pshaw.

B) I'd agree that Ozzie is still the best defensive SS I've ever seen, and the only defensive player I've seen who might compare to him is the young, svelte, 450+ putouts a year Andruw Jones. But still -- give me somebody who's 70 percent as good in the field but who can also swing the stick instead.

C) If you think that cross-generational comparisons can even be reasonably attempted, then the first shortstop I'd pick is Honus Wagner. If you don't, then give me even the Seattle-era Alex Rodriguez.

D) Larkin's got a shot next year. He's by far the best new guy on the ballot.

E) Since I just looked at that ballot, let me just say that the fact that Todd Van Poppel's name is apparently going to be on it makes my head want to explode.

A-Rod has set a precedent that I can get by on for one more year:

I'm 24-25 I was stupid. Well, I went to college and had time to "grow up" so I guess I can't use it.
