Sports Illustrated Reports A Rod...

This is true, but Rose did his as a manager not a player and he didn't even bet against his team.

Absolutely. About Griffey, even with his injuries, he should be considered in the Top 10 of all time, at least. The man was an absolute hammer at the plate, and one of the best defensive players to ever play the game. Not to mention that he is still playing even after all those injuries. Hey may have the most natural, fluid swing ever.

I didn't say he wasn't a ballplayer. He was a competitor and was the heart of the Big Red Machine, but he was not one of the best hitters of all time, nor even close.

I forgot to mention he's now an overly loud, redneck, POS Don Quixote type who's mad at the powers that be in baseball because he was too stupid to avoid gambling on games in which he had a hand in the outcome.

And then lied about it to everyone.

this guy may not have the numbers to compete with ruth, bonds, etc. but if i had to pick one guy that i would want on my team first pick on the playground, i would choose Calvin Edwin Ripken, Jr.

And I will gladly beat your team every time we play

seriously? an overhyped consecutive games record and you would take him first pick. My first pick is Sandy Koufax all day every day, but if I gotta have a position player, it's probably Rickey Henderson. Dude changed ballgames every time he suited up.

I'm with you. It would either be Rickey or Junior. I'm pretty sure a coin flip would have to decide that one.

Because you have no way of proving that Aaron or Ruth or anyone else was clean. Ruth found every advantage he could and Aaron played during the prime of the greenie era. Like it or not Bonds is the HR king

Sure I can. Steroids were first synthesized in the late 1930's, thus, clearing Babe Ruth. Anabolic steroids were not widely used in baseball until the late 80's-early 90's, thus, clearing Aaron. Even if by some small chance that they did use steroids, it wasn't illegal until 1990, and MLB did not ban them until 1991.

There.

Ripken was consistently good for his whole career. However, he wouldn't be my first pick.

I'd say that I'd choose one Nolan Ryan as my first pick.

. . . but his point still stands. Whether it was steroids, painkillers, amphetamines etc, there's no way of knowing who was taking what.

Painkillers are a whole another thing entirely. They're legal by prescription, which I imagine a lot of baseball players would ask for. Amphetamines? So speed is now a performance enhancing drug?

Because he was so dominant on the mound for an extended period of time.
longevity clearly has some merit in the argument about greatness, but .500 ball doesn't qualify for me. Also, if any pitcher in the history of the game was a roid machine, I'd wager that it was NR.

So since he likely cheated with something other than steroids he's clear? Unbelievable.

And my team would beat your team even more thoroughly than they did the Ironman's team.

No. My point is, steroids are something that chemically enhances your body, something that definitely will enhance your game. Having extra pine tar on the bat, or corking it, scuffing up the ball, throwing spitballs, are merely child's play compared to a performance enhancing drug, such as HGH or steroids.

Keep in mind that 70 years ago they sold the equivalent of cocaine, heroin etc in drug stores.

. . . and yes, over the course of a playing baseball everyday for 6 months, speed is absolutely a performance enhancing drug.

1) I know they used to put cocaine in Coca-Cola, and many remedies of the day had stuff that we would call illegal.

2) Yes, but you still can't mask being a bad player on that stuff.

I'll take Bob Gibson as my number 1 starter in his prime. Thanks.
that one makes some sense and he did have one absolutely monster season. I'd still take Koufax if I had to win. He won, a lot, on some of the sorriest offensive teams around. They wouldn't hit for him.

Oh, then it's okay then. They say, although I've alway wondered it it was just a saying or true, that every clubhouse has a sign that says "no betting on baseball."

Wasn't he a player/manager at some point?

True . . . but as the season wore on something like speed could definitely help a player recover faster for the next game.

Definitely true....and thats why guys started stuff like HGH and steroids, not for strength, but for recovery time. However, the HGH and steroids make you, as Kanye's song says - bigger, faster, stronger, better.
