Staley Seeking Waiver For T'ea Cooper

Is it coaching or players? Staley had won nothing until signing A’ja Wilson, who came close to signing with Tennessee but at the last minute decided to stay home and sign with South Carolina.

We’ll see how great a coach Staley is next year after losing Wilson to graduation. You got a preview of that when the Lady Vols dominated the Lady Cocks in Columbia with Wilson out.

BTW, Holly Warllick’s salary is half of what South Carolina pays Staley.

And the same could happen to Tennessee, what's your point? I'm interested in facts, not hypotheticals. The facts say Staley is clearly a much better coach...

South Carolina won a share of the SEC championship the year before A'ja came. Dawn has shown she can also do more with less. Wilson aside, she has done wonders with lower ranked players like Mitchell, Welch, and Coates and made them All- Conference or All-Americans. Holly needs a roster of top 15 kids to fight for a first round bye in the SEC tournament against a league that doesn't have as many top 15 players combined as Tennessee has on their roster alone. There's no question she is underachieving with the wealth of potential on her team, but the reality is she's winning enough that it's unlikely she will be replaced anytime soon.

what are you trying to say? lol

That you can't compare Holly and Dawn as coaches without also comparing the talent on each team. Holly is kicking @ss and taking names on the recruiting trail, but it hasn't led to results vs. Dawn who was able to essentially ride one elite player to a NC.

It might be premature to say it hasn't led to results.

I think this year's roster is the best that it will be for some time. You have Russell who is pretty much an automatatic two points if she gets the ball in position, a dangerous scorer in Nared, plus 4 solid guards and a good post backup with size/strength. Yet, they have been out of contention for the SEC title by mid January. Maybe they catch fire and win the SEC championship or the NC, but there's nothing they've done since that difficult stretch that shows they've turned a corner. This year was a great year for them to regain dominance of the SEC and make a run to the FF, but both of those look like longshots at this point.

Whether people want to admit it or not, next year will be a big rebuilding year for Tennessee. Russell bailed them out of so many games they should have lost, and they won't have her to anchor the middle anymore. If they don't learn how to play without relying on throwing it in to 21 and letting her get to work, it could be a very difficult year.

4 guards? Holly has no more eligibility left...we have Meme ( who's struggles with lay ups is concerning) Hayes and Westbrook. Who are you calling a 4th guard...I need a good laugh, please who?

Big guard, wing...whatever you classify Rennia Davis as.

You want a good laugh? Your attempts at trying to justify Tennessee's middling results on the lack of talent on the roster is a good place to start...

Our roster is still better than the SEC South Carolina and Miss State. We have the size in MR, the forwards/guards. We should be okay if Holly would take a long ride on her bike!

That's what I've been saying. This team is too talented to be fighting for a first round bye in the SEC tournament.

Just wait, Cooper is going to make the nation forget all about Crystal Dangerfield. Or so I've been told....

Still getting ripped off....

South Carolina Fan:

We saw last week what a focused, disciplined and hard driving team looks like in UCONN. Dawn's team looks like a group of sorority girls just playing around on the court, having silly fun. I'm concerned that Staley has lost this team and will need to start over - if she's willing to do that. Thought we had a female Geno in Dawn, but I'm afraid we're nowhere near that level. Geno would send most of Dawn's team packing.

She doesn't have the talent that Geno has either.

I haven't watched the Vandy broadcast yet, but I thought I read they made the comment that Tennessee was the best team in the SEC? If so I would agree, even though it isn't reflected in the records....

I don't know what to call next year honestly. Rebuilding? You have the two top recruiting classes on the floor, I don't expect to see a major shift as far as win/loss. Whats going to be the big question mark is coaching staff and philosophy. Green and Kasi haven't proven to be the next offensive producers of anything close to MR. And I think that's fine! Coaching staff philosophy, IMO, will be rebuilding because for the first time in a LONG time, Tennessee will be perimeter heavy and post light. I think Green, Kasi, Harris, and Collins will be just fine to cover the paint, but you can't honestly go into next season and say, pound the ball inside for an automatic two points. More than anything, the next 3-4 years is a great opportunity to teach spacing and dribble drive, screen settings for open shots and having good strong rebounders. More than anything, the next 3-4 years will be the perfect time to be that intense pressing defense Holly has dreamed about because each position on the floor has an exact replacement on the bench that is ready to come and in play. It will be interesting to see it played out.

No way in heck is Tn better than MSU this year, jmo

I'll like to see what Holly can do with MSU. I'll like to see what other coaches can do with our roster. We obviously can see South Carolina's shortcoming. Whereas UCONN does not have to guard USC's 3 pointers, I could see Geno's grin when South Carolina failed to guard the 3-point line.

Did Tennessee homers complain some years back about our PRE-SEASON ranking when Holly first took over as a head coach? Was then the top 4 ranking deserving? It's shameful we are okay now with not being in the top 10.

Who has the best in SEC roster?

I still think next season is rebuilding. Since Holly became coach, her game plan was to dump it inside first, whether to Izzy or Mercedes. She even tried that with Bashaara. She won't have a dominant inside presence next year. Green will provide size, but she doesn't have MR's ability to dominate inside and is not the same defensive presence. Holly will need to structure an offense around her perimeter players, and I haven't seen anything that suggests she knows how. She could very well still insist on dumping the ball inside to Green or Kasi whether they are good enough to be the offensive focus or not. Tennessee next year will need to be better with passing, ball movement and player movement. If they play the same as this year, but with Green in the middle, the losses will pile up quickly.

You are the joke. Please give us all a team ever, in women's ball, with 2 seniors, a semi talented junior with limited experience and limited offensive abilities, and the next 4 players zero division 1 ball experience, doing as well as us. Put your brain where you texting is! We are ranked 11th and will be top 10 in next poll.
No one with knowledge of basketball would ever consider Davis a guard...period

Are you serious? I suggest you go take a look at the UT roster and see what they have Rennia Davis listed as...period. Try putting your brain where your texting is.

So in your estimation, a team that starts 3 5-star upperclassmen (including the consensus #1 player as a 5th year senior and another top 5 player) and plays 3 top 10 freshmen heavy minutes shouldn't be expected to be more than the #12 team because...the freshmen haven't played Div I basketball before? Yeah, because we all know that it's impossible for freshmen to be impact players from day 1. Look how much Chennedy Carter has struggled.
LOL...talk about someone who is a joke. Way to lower the standards there.

2013-14 UNC. That was the team when Diamond was a freshman. Actually, they didn't have upperclassmen as nearly as accomplished as Nared and Russell are.
27-10 regular season and an elite 8 in the NCAA tournament.

Ever? Well our 98 team had no seniors, two juniors, a sophomore with limited experience and limited offensive abilities, and four freshmen with zero division 1 experience. I seem to recall that team did ok....

Any team that starts 6 players is going to win lol. Meme Jackson is not now, or ever was a 5 star player! Davis is not a guard period

This board would go nuts if this team played as poorly as that unc team! 10 loses? Lord the holly haters would go nuts. That UNC team also got blown out at UT...and by at least 4 other teams. They were lucky to get to elite 8
