Stallings on Finebaum (Texas to PAC 10)

That's not a bad point but Texas is still going to have the state of Texas to recruit from. On that same note, the rest of the SEC would get more exposure in Texas as well.

They would look similar to what LSU is becoming, imo.

The other leagues want more revenue. Expansion will allow for a championship game in the PAC 10 and Big 10. The SEC already has that.....and a lucrative TV deal with ESPN.

Neither the PAC 10 nor Big 10 will grow to 16 teams right away. That will essentially eliminate title contenders as they beat each other up. Think of it this way, if Nebraska, OH State, Michigan, and Penn State all have good years.........only one will contend. Again, if the PAC 10 goes to 16 and has Texas, USC, OU, WA, UCLA, TxTech, etc only one emerges.

Meanwhile if the SEC stands pat......The odds of the BCS or a playoff system matching one of our existing schools with the PAC 10 or Big 10 Champion for all the marbles is very high.

Why should the SEC not want the PAC 10 and Big 10 to eliminate the NCAA competition? Well, money is the only reason, and I think the SEC will come out just fine over the next decade without expanding. And if they do expand, I think you go after who is left from the ACC and Big East, after the other conferences re-form. Forget Tx, OU, FSU, Miami. Consider Clemson, Ga Tech, V tech, West Va. maybe.....but leave those other bad boys to beat on each other!!!!

Texas is not coming to the SEC. Reports consistently say they and three other big 12 schools are going to the pac 10 early next week. Texas A&M has been flirting with the SEC, but the latest reports have them going along with the others to the pac 10.

I'm not really following your line of thought. Miles took Saban's players and parlayed it into a title and has gone downhill ever since. Mack Brown has been at Texas for more years and is always in the hunt for a national title simply because of the talent in Texas. There's a helluva lot more football players in Texas than in Louisiana.

Word from aTm:

and this is about 3rd hand info, so I will qualify that.....Is that Slive viewed A&M as the key to what he wanted to do. If he could not land A&M then his entire plan to the west would pretty much be over, and he would have to look to the east to expand.

The news is that Texas and the rest will go to the Pac 10 on Tuesday. But if Slive can get an iron-clad commitment from A&M in the next 24-36 hours, he plans to make a run at Oklahoma, and convince them that they are a better fit for the SEC than the Pac 10. Slive feels that OU would not make a 'lone wolf' bolt for the SEC, but if A&M came then OU would be receptive. Whether OU would be interested remains to be seen, but if Slive can lock A&M down he is going to make a hard run at OU.

And THAT, from what I have been told is just about giving Texas a stroke. A&M would not be a back breaker in the Pac 10 deal, but if OU were to bolt, the entire thing collapses.

From same poster:

Let me make something clear....If A&M wants to come to the SEC, they are welcome no matter what OU does. Slive wants A&M, but he also recognizes that he won't have a chance at OU without another Big 12 school already committed.

I didn't mean to imply that A&M to the SEC was DEPENDENT on OU.

Different thread:

You heard it here first, second, third....whatever. When the leaders broke for the weekend this afternoon the paperwork was all in place. Just gotta hang around till Tuesday to watch for the smoke signal coming from atop of Rudder. Have a nice weekend! And suck it sips!

fwiw.

I don't know why the SEC would want to share the huge pie they have with other schools. The tv contracts are already paying all the current SEC schools big money. Would the revenue increase due to adding some Big XXII schools or make the payouts to current schools become diluted?

I am pretty sure once expansion happens the tv deals can be renegotiated to add money and potentials markets.

IMO we (the SEC) do not need to expand PERIOD! I say let the other schools join these so called mega-conferences and treat college sports as if its is nothing more than a money hungry machine. I know that like most anything these days, money is the main priority. However, this is a huge mistake and takes the game down a notch. These are kids we are talking about, who are playing their way to an education. I get sick and tired of high school athletes acting like they are some sort of rock star that should be given the world just because they can play a game at a higher level than their peers. Whatever happened to the work ethic? To the PRIDE? This is just another step towards turning the college game into more of a job instead of a learning experience. All this does is sets a pitiful example to younger athletes. Education first, then TEAM...not I. I say keep our conference just as we know it now, clean it up, and lets go out and continue to destroy others. We are the SEC, not the SE slightly W C. Im not a stubborn individual when it comes to Traditions, but there are some things that are best left alone. If it isnt broke, dont fix it. Finally, from a Vol fan point of view, lets get rid of adidas and move on to nike. I would love to see what kind of uniforms we would have if they were nike combat. GO VOLS!!! And GO SEC!!! Oh yeah, and one more thing....Im pretty sure that Kiffin was the guy that played the character "Data" from Star Trek...just saying.

The SEC MUST expand if these other conferences do (especially the B10) expand like the rumors say. It would be totally foolish of Slive and Co. to stand pat and expect to stay on top. IMO, we should add, at least, VT, Clemson, FSU and Miami to get to 16 teams. Throw in USF and UNC for good measure (if we miss on Texas A&M and Texas) to get to 18. No downside in adding more great teams.......sure, the competition would be even harder, but that is what we pride ourselves on right? Toughest conference? IMO, we have to keep this in-tact no matter what. We absolutely can NOT let the west coast be the biggest, highest profile conference. Can't happen.

Miles continues to recruit well too but his results continue to worsen. I think if Brown were in a conference where there were more than one game a year that he played a team with comparable talent, he would get exposed for what he is, not a very good coach.

Is the tv revenue going to increase because we add more schools to the lineup or will the revenue have to be split up to more bank accounts?

Its been reported with the addition of more teams, any conference would be able to "renegotiate" their TV deals. It wouldnt be splitting up the same pie more ways.....it would be splitting up a much bigger pie more ways. A school like Texas would bring in MILLIONS by themselves to this conference.

Interesting how the apparel manufacturer worked it's way into that rant.

Yeah, I went overboard just a little. But seriously, it would be interesting. Is it just me, or does Kiffin resemble "Data"? Anyways, I DO agree that we dont need to let our conference strength stagger in any way. I guess I see it differently. If the Pac-10 does land Texas and Oklahoma (and a few others), and the Big-10 does the same, wouldnt that make our conference even more appealing to athletes? To try to land in the smaller, yet powerful SEC? We would have fewer teams but we would still be pretty darn tough. What about basketball? If we do decide to expand, would it make more sense to go after a couple of schools that are middle of the road in football yet outstanding on the hardwood (UNC and/or Duke)? It would boost our basketball conference and at the same time prevent us from beating each other up even more than we do already in football. How about the best of both worlds? Land some schools that are good in both sports (WVU and/or GT). Whatcha think?

The SEC has won the last four National Titles in football so I don't think there's any reason to run scared of any other conference with their changing horses. However, you do have a good point that the conference could stand to improve in the basketball arena.
