Stallings on Finebaum (Texas to PAC 10)

I don't know why the SEC would want to share the huge pie they have with other schools. The tv contracts are already paying all the current SEC schools big money. Would the revenue increase due to adding some Big XXII schools or make the payouts to current schools become diluted?

word on the street is that there is a cause in the contract that would allow for a renegotiation for expanding or declining membership numbers

Word from aTm:

and this is about 3rd hand info, so I will qualify that.....Is that Slive viewed A&M as the key to what he wanted to do. If he could not land A&M then his entire plan to the west would pretty much be over, and he would have to look to the east to expand.

The news is that Texas and the rest will go to the Pac 10 on Tuesday. But if Slive can get an iron-clad commitment from A&M in the next 24-36 hours, he plans to make a run at Oklahoma, and convince them that they are a better fit for the SEC than the Pac 10. Slive feels that OU would not make a 'lone wolf' bolt for the SEC, but if A&M came then OU would be receptive. Whether OU would be interested remains to be seen, but if Slive can lock A&M down he is going to make a hard run at OU.

And THAT, from what I have been told is just about giving Texas a stroke. A&M would not be a back breaker in the Pac 10 deal, but if OU were to bolt, the entire thing collapses.

From same poster:

Let me make something clear....If A&M wants to come to the SEC, they are welcome no matter what OU does. Slive wants A&M, but he also recognizes that he won't have a chance at OU without another Big 12 school already committed.

I didn't mean to imply that A&M to the SEC was DEPENDENT on OU.

Different thread:

You heard it here first, second, third....whatever. When the leaders broke for the weekend this afternoon the paperwork was all in place. Just gotta hang around till Tuesday to watch for the smoke signal coming from atop of Rudder. Have a nice weekend! And suck it sips!

fwiw.

15th hand info from a message board or not that makes the most sense of anything I have read about the A&M situation to date.

I am sorry, but for those of you who way we are the top conference in the nation, and do not need to expand, you only need to look at recent history to debunk your theory. The SEC is the top conference right now....but things change. The SEC has not always been the top conference. They have always been one of the top conferences, but not THE top conference. Historically, that would probably go to the Big 10 prior to the SEC. What happened to change that? The SEC expanded, albeit with lower tier teams, and grew their footprint into difference areas, increasing their fan base. Over a period of years, the SEC grew and the Big 10 was stagnant. Now, the SEC has a huge following, a very lucrative TV package, and there is always an SEC game on national TV...

So lets fast forward. The Big 10 grows in their footprint, adds some teams, increases their fan base, as does the Pac 10, especially if the Pac 10 grows into a huge Texas market...over a period of years, these conferences will grow and will surpass the SEC because they will have all the attention and coverage. Recruits will want to move to these conferences where the exposure will be greater, ESPN will start putting SEC games on ESPN VIII (The Ocho), and thus the change in power conferences will begin.

Too far fetched? It has occurred with the Big 10 and Pac 10 before...and it happens in business all the time (Just look at GM--has happened to them twice)...you must continue to change yourself to what the media wants, or you will wilt and struggle....

You are never too big or too strong to be dethroned. Actually, as the leader of the pack, the bullseye is on you, so you must be even more proactive than anyone else or risk being overtaken.

Ok...Its done. A&M is in the SEC. Anouncement next week. I think they may want to pull in some more former Big XII members, maybe OK St. Hows that?

Not to shabby. I keep waiting for the SEC to drop a bomb and pull in a couple of big time schools. I would hate for the PAC-10 and Big 10 to become college football/basketball's premier conferances.

I know you're just being positive, but Texas would do just fine in the SEC. You have to recruit top notch year in and year out to compete at the top of the SEC, and the Horns can do that without even leaving the state.

Oklahoma and TA&M would both have tougher times with the jump in competition, but they'd still be competitive. Remember, SEC teams are only given a one loss handicap for the competition they face.

everybody keeps throwing this out. if texas is soooo good then why arent they winning more? you say they will always recruit great and they dont leave the state. ok then they are basically LSU. great on paper and awesome looking recruits but underacheivers. if they are so great why are they hiding from playing more than just OU? a&m may not win championships right off but they arent trying to hide and claim "tradition"

Slive is in College Station today. Maybe an anouncement on Monday, but I think A&M is a lock so he is really trying to get either OU OK St at this point.
