That was the first hockey game I have watched in years and it was exciting as hell.

i have to give credit where credit's due. last night's game was a great one. Fleury is the man. if he's not on that team, this series is over.

very exciting, i must admit. if hockey was played like that all the time, and it wasn't on some crap cable network, people might actually start to care.

Go Pens.

uhh....the series is over. All we're seeing now is window dressing.

As to the viewership, I assumed having Crosby in the deal would help considerably. It hasn't.

I don't see how it's over with the Pens having the chance to tie the series at home now.
Crosby is a whiner. Would much rather watch the Swedes on the Red Wings do their thing playing great two way hockey.

I'm a hockey fan. I hate the Penguins as much as I hate any team in sports. However, I've been long since resigned to the fact that the fabulous leadership of Gary Bettman has basically destroyed the sport in the consciousness of the American sport-viewing public. The people who think that Crosby has any chance at all of building the sport's fanbase are kidding themselves. Maybe if he played for the Rangers.

well, they play again Wed, so there you go. and last night's game was the epitomy of "it ain't over til it's over".

as for the viewership, i don't want to pretend here....i'm not what you would call a hockey fan. i loosely pay attention cause the pens are good and my wife loves it.

but, i can say having watched this whole series, there has been some great play, mostly by the red wings, but in games 3 and 5, that was as competitive a sporting event i've seen in some time.

too bad no one really cares.

I'm a Flyers fan so I agree with your feelings on the Pens. Also,on Bettman. How long before he insitutes a shootout in the playoffs and bans fighting to complete
his work here on Earth.

Playoff hockey is damn good stuff to watch. Those guys really went at it last night.
agreed. like i said, i'm not going to call myself a hockey fan...but i've been to a couple of games, and probably watched 40 games my entire life.

i can appreciate what they are doing out there and as i've watched more this year, and specifically this series, you see different styles of play and the level of athleticism it takes to do what they do.......and it's also why i thought Fleury was so impressive...the red wings dominated most of the game, kept everything in the pen zone, and took so many more shots than the pens did......fleury was great.

anyway, i guess i have a new appreciation for hockey and will likely pay more attention in the future, cause i was truly entertained last night......

Playoff hockey is great stuff, and overtime in the playoffs is hands down the best thing in sports. Whatever's second is not close.

too bad no one really cares.

That's what being off ESPN will do to you. If you're not on Sportscenter, you don't exist.

the nhl tv deal is putrid, no doubt about that. at least as it relates to exposure to the masses....

Yea, I am a very casual fan as well. My uniformed guess is that Bettman and management have really hurt the NHL but I guess the players deserve some blame as well for the strike. When flipping channels I rarely even pass by Verses. They need a better TV deal and better marketing. It is a great sport to watch.

I know most don't care, but my jingoism comes out in full force for the Ryder Cup. For me, it's just hard to get more exciting than the team matches and the late singles matches there. The drama is enormous and the minute to minute action is amazing. Most intense event in sports to me.

It was a great game Jakez, when the Pens tied it up with 35 seconds, I was so freakin excited. Sudden death ot in hockey is the best. Wednesday night at the Igloo, GO PENS.

It was a lockout, not a strike; it was precipitated by the owners. But the players turned down a deal which would have saved the season that ended up being more generous than what they eventually settled for. The real killer was the TV deal. Bettman should have just let ESPN broadcast games for free (like the deal with NBC) if that's what it took to stay on the network. VS might as well not exist as far as most people are concerned; even if they have it, they probably don't know what channel it's on. Funny how NASCAR coverage on ESPN has rocketed up now that they're carrying races, while hockey coverage has dropped off the map since hockey went elsewhere.

Bettman is running the NHL as though he's still secretly working for David Stern.

Do you go to the home playoff games Volsgal?

no, my brother is the season ticket holder. I've only been to one game ever. He's the one that got me hooked on hockey though, and living in Pittsburgh though the Steelers rule, there are a lot of Pens fans.

OK. I do remember that scenario now.

frankly, live hockey is one of the best spectator events out there. TV hockey, no so much.

BPV live hockey is great, I have to settle for watching it on t.v. and you dont see everything. The way those guys skate and handle the puck its impressive imo.

You have to go to enough games that your brain fills in everything that you can't see on the screen -- line changes, where the puck goes, etc. But yeah, no matter how well you get to know the game, TV is still a pretty pale shadow of what it's like to be in the building.

Hockey has benefited the most from HD. I said my Wings would win in 6 and I stand by that.

it's very hard to appreciate the pace of the game and the movement of the puck without being there live. TV just makes the space seem too small and the action seem slower than real life.
